- We bring our 3 Duramax Diesel trucks back for the tow portion of our test! We compare loaded fuel economy and 0-60 times between a 2009 LMM (292k miles), a 2015 LML (220k miles), and a 2023 L5P (38k miles.) All trucks are GMC Sierra 2500 HDs (SLT trim if you were curious)

I got a 2010 duramax. You can't beat no def fluid without needing a delete.
My 07 5.9l Cummins has never left me wanting anything else. Anything with emissions is a no go.
Bought an 04 Ram 2500 w/5.9 and so far I'm happy!

Keep the 09 for a everyday driver and the 23 for hauling and trips
I have a 2006 2500 with 317,000 miles , triple disc tq converter ,EFI Live tunes and some supporting mods….I tow 20,000 lbs all day long….the body, cab corners and rockers are rotting to shit here in NY, but super reliable
LMM’s are known for their reliability especially when deleted. It’s just an LBZ with more emissions on it. As an owner of one myself I’d gladly take the ‘09.
I have a 2010 lmm it's been a very good truck
I pull 23k pounds with my 09 lmm quite often, pulls just fine. Only thing is the rad can’t quite keep up in hot weather but in normal weather it has no issues
Mine is deleted and tuned as well. I run modified stock 95% of the time though. Even for towing, stage 5 is fun though, totally different truck with an extra 100 or so hp

Keep the 23. It will hold the value when you do go to sell it so it will not end up costing you as much as you think.
Ive owned 4 Duramax. 2009, 2014, 2016, and my current 2021. My 2021 out tows anything Ive owned in every way EXCEPT fuel mileage. My 2016 was deleted and tuned and was the MPG winner out of them all.
I have an 08 duramax z71 I can tell you how impressed I am with it I have been offered 20k for it cash and it’s bone stock only
Thing I have done is maintenance and recalls it has just over 100k light miles on it . Wish i could share a pic .

This is awesome content like seeing the comparison between the newer trucks and the little older truck I have a 2010 LMM and it suits me just fine and if you put a little power to that thing it’ll run right with that l5p but what I have to say is you said it yourself the payment on the 23 isn’t cheap and you could use that money to put into awesome content for the channel nobody really cares about a 23 truck even though it does pull good I think the money spent on your content would be better for you and the channel 🤷 just a thought I like watching all your content either way keep up the good work

In my opinion you should hook up the gooseneck trailer and do a test between the 09 and the 23 to make sure it's going to be a big difference
One more piece of advice keep your 09 fellas eventually the smog filters ( def) will kill those newer trucks I've seen 2 now a ford and a Cummins completely blown from particulate buildup in the systems just saying I've been at this a long time I'm 67

Yeah idk man. I have a 2012 LML with the tow tune, and I'm getting 13 mpg pulling a 40ft camper. The GVW of the camper is 11,500 lbs and its a bumper pull
Build the 09. I just sold a 22 half ton to go to an 07 lbz. No payment is super nice
Get a 4th gen Cummins if you want fuel economy. I average 3 mpg more towing with my Cummins vs my duramax. The duramax has a little more speed to it being a v8
The 2015 is definitely deleted. Which impacts the economy in a good way and its on after market wheels and is lifted which impacts economy in a bad way.
Keep the lmm. Mechanically identical to an lbz with added 5 hp in the tune and a DPF. Proven platform with the 6 speed. Throw some compounds on it, a lift pump and a solid single Efi live tow tune. Will pull anything and act like nothings there
It’s the wheels and tires that is hurting the fuel economy on the LML. makes a bigger difference than a lot of people think
Love my lmm it's 2008 I'm 67 it will keep up with any new truck my friend has a l5 p and my lmm can keep up with it all day in fact I get better gas mileage and can tow just as much seriously I almost went new untill I found this mint condition lmm Duramax I'm never going back it's basically a Lbz with a def filter love my Duramax in not surprised mine had 133,000 on it it's basically new the interior is like factory new just a beautiful truck great video guys brand new subscriber Duramax for me period

I would keep the 23 if you just need a good reliable tow rig. By the time you’re done, modifying the 09 with the year and mileage the worth of the truck Will not hold compared to the 23. You probably won’t really save that much money in the long run.

I think it’s considered an 8.5x24. Payload is like 8300lbs

Anything made in the lastd decade is pure and utter garbage. Keep the 09, be smart. It's just a matter of time before that 23' starts having issues that only the deepest of pockets are able to keep on top of...warranty aside bcz let's be real, your rig will be down for months while you pay out of pocket for a rental LOL.
