  • Often overlooked by seasoned modellers, the starter sets are really getting good. This lifeboat looks like it will be a satisfying build, whether a novice, returning to the hobby, or an experienced builder.

It's a lovely looking kit! Mine came today; very impressive - slide moulding for the cabin piece as well; that doesn't come cheap to make!
Airfix went all-in with this one, it seems; especially with the additional decal sheet...nice to see! 😃
Great review, and I look forward to seeing your build, and doing my own too! 👍

I used a Humbrol orange rattle can on the Severn and it worked perfectly. It was years ago but likely over a Halford's grey primer. I have an old Citadel orange which I recall was also good but was just too light for the RNLI shade.
The Severn was worth persevering with as in the end it looks amazing. I think the superstructure was designed to lift off to show that detailed interior, but it was too tight a fit so I ended up sanding down the inside. But I agree, it depends how much you want to build it.

I've seen other people's finished Severn and they can look great, but I just had enough. Shame as I like the subject but I wasn't enjoying it anymore.

Perhaps an idea for painting the orange onto the kit....
How about having a white or yellow undercoat first, which should hopefully make the orange go on easier and make it pop more and perhaps less coats?

Hi Simon. I used a white primer for the orange but I got the same as I always get with humbrol, it's just too watery. My airbrush doesn't have an adjustment for air pressure, so I can't not thin the paint. Not tried a yellow primer though, any recommendations?
      Cheers

@@nostalgicplastic4323 sorry mate, although I purchase the mini airbrush you recommended ages ago...Ive still not used it as Im still waiting to alter my spare room, so I still only use hairy sticks Im afraid.
Ive used a rattle can of humbrol matt white for a Gulf War Tornado, but that needed 3 coats of desert pink before the white streaks and brush marks finally went.
Begining to wonder if I should have used grey primer for that instead.
Ive got another one to build so might try grey primer instead. However, using grey primer might make the orange on the lifeboat too dark.

@@simonjohn8904 yep, grey was even harder to cover. I'll have a look for a yellow primer, ta for the idea.

Got mine today plus the decal sheet to create the version that carries my late father’s name through donation. Before I start I have airbrushing set up but wanted to ask all the best way to thin the supplied paint and ratio . I have tamiya thinner or is it just better to brush paint. Loving the new coloured instructions

      @nostalgicplastic4323  Před měsícem

Wow, that's something to be proud of!
There are many who can prescribe a thinner but I use Vallejo Flow Improver as thinners for acrylics. I've not tried airbrushing the little pots though.

A good buy if you have orange paint left over from the Bond Bug. (Where else would you ever use it, other than the General Lee?)

Just got mine today. Wanted to get from my local (ish to Middlesbrough) Shannon station at whitby, but they aren't selling it.
Ended up visiting the model centre on the way home as they had stock for £17.99. I had hoped to have a good shop there for other kits as well, based on their website stock, but it turns out it's a small shop filled mainly with trains on display.
Wasn't sure if I got extra paints or not as I had 10 pots. Now seeing your unboxing I see I have the same amount, but I have no 11 which isn't listed as being needed.
Just wanted to check what paints others got.
    Mine were
    11
    15
    18x2
    27x2
    33x2
    34
    56

11 is silver, so probably aerials or such like. Might be a printing error. Most folk don't use the little pots and I've only used tiny dabs of them in the past, so you might want to get some better ones. But hey, up to you, they're probably OK, I'm just going by others opinions.
