The International Court of Justice has ruled Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories is illegal and should come to an end “as rapidly as possible.” This is one of the most significant rulings issued by an international court on the matter since Israel’s military occupation of the territories began in 1967. We speak with Palestinian human rights lawyer Diana Buttu on the historic ruling and what impact it could have on Israel. “The court makes it clear not only that Israel’s occupation is illegal, but it also says that all countries around the world have an obligation to make sure that Israel doesn’t get away with it,” says Buttu. “It’s up to the international community now to put sanctions on Israel to end this military occupation.”

Decades of impunity, privilege, and disregard led to almost complete annexation of the West Bank,a brutal occupation, an inhumane siege and an ongoing attempt at genocide to happen to Palestinians for this judgement to be passed! While I am happy, I’m also angry! Why did this colonial project go on for so long? Why is the ICJ/ICC so reluctant to judge western countries? Why does the ICJ/ICC act as an extension or mechanism for neo colonialism? I hope this is the beginning of an error where the ICC/ICJ begin to be truly impartial, moral, and proactive in defending human rights regardless of the Country, color of a person, or religion of a person.
The 'west bank' was liberated from Jordan, who had illegally occupied it, back in 1967. In the peace treaty between Jordan and Israel, Jordan rescinded (cancelled) all claims to the area. Therefore Israel is entitled to be there and is not occupying it. Just because the palestinian arabs have a fantasy that they can take the land back doesn't make their claims valid.
Unfortunately, it will probably continue despite this ruling. Israel and its allies have demonstrated their disrespect for international law. The sentiments and values that you describe in your comment, are the ones I grew up with and held dear. I loved the enlightened, progressive world I came of age in. It seemed so full of promise and the future seemed bright. The world has changed though. Complacency, ignorance, and rejection of those hard-won democratic institutional mechanisms has replaced the calm rationality that underpinned the system.
The world today is terrifying. Huge swaths of the American population are distracted by fictional claims of immigrant crime, non-existent boarder invasion etc....and while they plod along blindly, Israel and the United States are making a mockery of international law. The threat of WW III and/or nuclear apocalypse is an ever present danger, especially given the re-emergence of great power politics in place of the declining super power of the United States. The Atlantic ocean currents are nearing collapse and there are no viable options to mitigate the catastrophic effects that will ensue (not to mention myriad other climate issues that are taking a backseat to geopolitical issues) - arguably it is necessary for them to be a lower priority. If the international community is too weak to stop a blatant and brutal genocide, they are definitely too weak to cooperate on climate issues .

Because things have been relatively peaceful since WWII, people seem to dismiss these (and other) issues as some kind of hyperbole that will blow over. I have never been an alarmist, but I also have never been aware of so many critical and credible threats before the last few years.
These are the issues that matter. There is no point squabbling over a weak border when the events you are ignoring are causing a rapid collapse in world order. Who cares if there are migrants in your country when you are flirting with complete annihilation anyway.
The only hope is United States gets it shit together. Americans need to recommit themselves to the democratic and humanitarian principals it was founded on. America should act like a world leader. Stop the genocide with action, not deliver laughable and disingenuous lip service with no substance.

So in the 1967 War Israel was surrounded and in a surprise attack from Arab countries around Israel. Not unlike the Hamas terrorists murdering on the October 7th abomination, the 67 attack came without warning. The 67 war was started by Egypt, west of Israel, Hezzbola terrorists from the North of Israel, Syria and Jordan on the eastern side. The war lasted 6 days, and despite the surprise attack Israel won and gained additional territory, "West Bank" that was considered as Palestinian territory but now would be controlled by Israel. The Golan Heights, bordering Lebanon, Syria and Jordan. Just as in the recent October 7th abominable attack on Israeli villagers, except that Israel gained the initiative and repelled the invading countries. How is it Israel does not start these one-sided Wars, yet prevailed and the International Court finds against Israel, and she has to give up strategic land? Absolutely bias and absurd finding. Israel will not give up these territories and will remain in control of the Golan Heights and border territories along Lebanon where the terrorists Hezzbola military exists! The International Court does not adjudicate the aggression by the PRC within the China Sea or the Pacific Basin. Taiwan, the Philippines, and the border of India, Tibet and Buhhtan no Court action on this PRC aggression? In the meantime Israel has to stand down in the face of Iran's proxy war against Israel? Enough with this jaded International Court. Long Live Israel.
Until the UN formally imposes economic and military sanctions against apartheid Israel all this is a waste of time. At least courageous nations and private citizens have started imposing their own sanctions which have already started crippling their economy
