I must say that Sinister is genuinely THE ONLY modern horror movie (post-2000s) that creeps me out till this day. I mean sure, just to be fair there are other horror movies. But they, to me, could only be categorized as thrillers and nothing more. Maybe I'd give credit to the first Insidious because of its originality. But Sinister? Man, from the time I first saw it in the theaters (which was late at night) till now, the horror is visceral. Almost like how "The Exorcist" was seen back in the 70s.
And just like the second Exorcist, "Exorcist II: The Heretics", the second Sinister sucked.

I hate it when people try and reduce what a "horror" movie is. For example, Silence of the Lambs is a horror film. It is ALSO a thriller. Just because a movie is a thriller doesn't mean it can't ALSO be a horror movie. You can't pigeonhole the horror genre into something subjective (i.e. how it personally made you feel).

a lot of people didn't fully understand Sinister when it came out because the myth/ legend of Bagul that this is based around/ off is not overly well known. Bagul is a Babylonian demon that was worshipped by some as a deity and essentially "ate" children but not in the way we understand as eating...he consumed them into his own world. He lived in a world different from our own and after these children were consumed they became his...well it is hard to describe...it was almost like they were his servants or acolytes. Baghul rarely showed himself in our world and reflected himself through the face of the children...so if he was ever caught on film or camera it would look like the kids killed people. it is children more susceptible that end up being his favourite...hence why the guy's daughter was targeted. I won't lie this film terrified me and the genuine gore behind some of the killing
a lot of things seen in the film represent Bagul..for example the Scorpion, like the Scorpio Zodiac, is very symbolic of the life cycle...life, death, rebirth and to kill a symbol of it like the dad did was very dumb...it's an insult. It would be like putting your finger up to God in church.
also biggest mistake he made...burning the film.
i'm not saying i approve of a writer doing this...but there are many stories in fiction of writers being mocked for unfair reasons; look at Room 1408 which is a Stephen King film, Michael Enslow in that is mocked as a writer in that for debunking ghosts, they say he is a trash writer. But the tragic thing is Michael lost his daughter at the beginning of the story to sickness so he lost his faith on good things or after life...so he never believed in spirits...until he encountered Room 1408...a haunted room at a hotel that forced him to face the truth that ghosts exists...including his daughter. It isn't one of the more ell known Stephen King films but it is a good one.

The lawnmower scene is one of the rare, if possibly only, jump scare that scared me so bad I actually flew off my seat and hit the ground. Hitting my head on the seat in front of me, that a guy was sitting in. I actually left with a few bruises after that. The only other one I can think of is ' I saw her face' in the Ring, and the red lamp in INLAND EMPIRE, which made me convulse, but fortunately I was watching that on my couch. so no bruises.

YEEEEEESSSSS the "disgusting" feeling is exactly what I love about it!!! There's this horrible dread that sits in the pit of your stomach the whole time because you can see exactly what's going to happen, but you realize there's nothing you can do to stop it. I've never seen another movie that made me feel the same way.
Especially the lawnmower video. As soon as you see the lawnmower, you know someone's getting run over by it, and it's just so tense while all you can do is wait for it to happen.

i agree, it is also one of the creepiest movies I have ever seen. The music really makes it, too. I’ve never heard music quite as spooky. Especially the music playing during the car scene. Sometimes, I’ll lay in bed, think about it, and get spooked.
The first time I became aware of the film, I was over a friend’s house, she put it on, and I just saw the tree hanging scene, and was like “Um, what the hell is this!?” And asked her if she could immediately turn it off.
It seemed like it was a real life recording from something that actually happened, at the time.
Then, later I watched the entire thing with my family. I don’t know if, I can, at this point. But, for a long time, I felt like I couldn’t watch it on my own, and avoided it. It just spooked me, so much.

Well if I ever have a jammed door that I can't get open, I'm going to hire Steven's left shoulder because that thing is battle hardened after this reaction! The scene with the children in the background as Ethan hawke is walking through the house is especially chilling. It was done by combining two shots, his was recorded in normal time and they had the child actors go through the same path but they filled it at twice the speed. When they slowed it down to match the first recording created the almost ghost like and unsettling movements that shown in the scene. Really good movie but I don't think the second one even came close to how well this one did in terms of story and performance. Love your reactions, keep them coming!

The soundtrack is amazing. It features bands like Aghast, Ulver, Boards of Canada, Accurst and Sunn O))). The soundtrack and Ethan Hawke made me overlook the biggest plot hole in the movie: how couldn't Ethan not have known that all families were killed in other places and the only thing they had in common was that they lived in that house for a while? Is he that bad at doing research? In a scene he was looking at a police report listing one of the family's addresses, a previous and current one. Also, all cases would've been covered by the media. Ethan didn't even need police reports to tell him when and where the families died and that one member was missing and never found. So he was truthful to his wife they didn't move next to (or into) a murder house. But since that house was something all cases had in common of course the media and investigators travelled to that place to investigate the connection and the local population created in time their local legend.
