Update on Koko and her Kittens (2018)

  • Koko has taken care of many kittens, and helped raise them to become healthy cats, over the years. Yet, she continues to start over each time with as much enthusiasm as she had when she first adopted "All Ball" (who she named) 30 years ago. See how she's doing with her latest feline friends, Ms. Gray and Ms. Black, whom she adopted only a couple of years ago. Koko has become a role model for both interspecies communication and empathy.
    Fortunately, she is not unique - all gorillas have the same intrinsic capability to gesture meaningfully and care about others who are often quite different than themselves. This observation has the potential to save all endangered great apes, and to enrich our relationships with them in captivity!
    Please support the Gorilla Foundation to realize this potential: www.koko.org

    • @yodawg45
      @yodawg45 Před 3 lety

      @@Johnnythefirst I mean for one a Gorilla is considerably stronger than a human on average, much more intimidating than humans (looks wise) and cats have been domesticated by humans so they are far more inclined to trust us over other non-cat animals. Not to mention a Gorilla, regardless of the intelligence level isn't as aware of their own strength and have less regards for personal space than us, they are more invasive, Koko included. Let's be honest she's not very shy. I'm not knocking Koko, in fact I would have loved to have met her. But on the off chance she could take a mood swing, like any of us can, she could do a hell of a lot more damage in a lot less time. There would be very little anyone could do to stop it. Also as goognam pointed out the cats did seem a bit uneasy at times, especially when she was being more forceful.

    • @christopher6600
      @christopher6600 Před 3 lety +25

      @@yodawg45 It's all about social conditioning with cats. If cats are familiarized with another animal, be it a human, a dog, or even a gorilla, from a young age, then they'll more or less be fine around that type of animal for the rest of their lives, barring negative reinforcement. Human's aren't a special exception either -- look no further than how feral strays respond to humans. It's simply that, by taking over the parental role for a kitten, we condition cats to see us as providers of food, safety, and positive social interaction. Domestic cats are made, not born; The kittens of a domestic cat will be feral if they lack that social conditioning to humans.
      The uneasiness you describe is pretty congruent with cats in general; If I were to cradle my cat's head as I move in for a kiss, the way that Koko is seen doing, it would react the same way. Their behavior is an indication of an uncomfortable or otherwise unwanted interaction, but it's not an indicator of fear.
      That the cats clearly tolerate this interaction despite not necessarily enjoying it is a testament to their social conditioning towards Koko; If they truly felt even somewhat endangered, they wouldn't be seen anywhere close to Koko, much less lounging in close proximity. They certainly wouldn't remain lounging next to her after an unwanted interaction. They would be keeping their distance, and - if at relative ease but still unsure - would be laying belly-flat on all four legs, not lounging curled as we see them. And of course if they were genuinely uncomfortable/fearful then we would be seeing ears-flat, back-raised, hair on-edged, and/or hissing.
      All in all I'd say it's pretty clear that these cats were well conditioned to Koko - Not to the same degree that we as humans are capable of conditioning cats to ourselves, but certainly well enough to be comfortable around her.

    • @topogigio7031
      @topogigio7031 Před 3 lety +6

      @@yodawg45 a cat has no conditioning to believe a gorilla is intimidating, that is purely YOUR own bias (and a problematic one). The cat does not know the gorilla is stronger, cats do not have the ability to spread the fact that humans domesticated them.
      Its pretty telling that you're afraid of anything that's different than you. A gorilla has the same capacity to gently nuzzle as humans do. In fact, they are often more gentle to the point of sometimes not actually interacting physically. There are moments in video where Koko would reach towards something but shes so careful she barely brushes it

After all; in "Of Mice & Men" Lenny killed all the mice (& the puppy) he got, but Koko looks after her kittens very well ... which is a BIG difference. I'd say a hug from Koko isn't any different than being hugged by a larger-sized human (& she would probably be somewhat gentler, too). Remember: all gorillas are koko’s. They feel like we do and love like we do. Same with other animals like elephants and cats and dogs. They just can not communicate through language like we do. But koko is very smart and learnt sign language I’m happy she had people who cared to get to know her and teach her 🙏🏼💕

      Mauro Goncalves well, as far as you know, based on limited human understanding, other animals don't have contempt. You should watch a documentary called The Superior Human. It's eye opening.

    • @maurokoller3910
      @maurokoller3910 Před 6 lety +3

      I will, but my point is, that emotions are regulated through our consciousness which is based on our human brain and because every animal differs in their brainstructure we are not the same. We fail to understand consciousness and can understand it best through spoken words. Based on our limited human understanding we can understand other human but we fail to understand other species, because we cant communicate with them. But I am sure that the human is superior to other animals if we look from an evolutionary point or just simply out of the window. We have intelligence like no other being that we know of. Thats a fact. But as we clearly can see with Koko or a handful of other species; we are not the only species that has consciousness and intelligence on a level of a human being.
      But emotions are regulated through neurochemicals and we know, that many animals dont have specific neurochemicals that we have. So we know, that they dont have the same emotions that we have.

    • @chihuahuabulldog
      @chihuahuabulldog Před 6 lety +2

      Mauro Goncalves - I do realize that humans are animals. I think most humans have the same emotions, just display or respond to them differently (sociopaths being an obvious exception). I do believe that many other species actually do have many of the same emotions as humans. I don't believe in evolution. I see no way that a single-cell organism that reproduces a-sexually can evolve into such complex beings as, for one, humans with not only the male-female reproduction, but the brain, nervous system, etc. Of course, this is not the place to have a debate. Our two comments may give others something to think about...or not. I mean no disrespect to you or your opinions. :-) I just saw your second comment. This response was to only part of your first comment.

    • @maurokoller3910
      @maurokoller3910 Před 6 lety +1

      I think we have to close our eyes and ask ourselves how we feel and what that means for our life. And if we do, we have to ask ourselves how different we would feel when we wouldnt consciously know what we feel and just be without thought. Maybe if we understand ourselves better we could eventually understand how other humans with the same brain think. After that maybe we can look to science and let them discover how the brains of other animals work to understand their unconsciousness; but there is no way, we could understand sth like consciousness which we dont even understand in humans despite being able to communicate our understanding of ourselves.
      Luckily u dont have to believe in evolution for it to be true. I understand your problem of life evolving out of nothing, but whats the alternative? How long did u live? 30 years? 40? And now just look how long evolution had to produce male-female reproduction. It took 8.000.000.000 years.....until the earth was there and another few BILLION years until life was there. Just look at this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miller%E2%80%93Urey_experiment. In a weeks time water, hydrogen, ammonia and methane changed to amino acids a compound of life. And life isnt something too mystical; just imagine your screen. 1080x720 pixel: 777.600 pixel. Now imagine a computer starting with all black and one white pixel in the middle. Then two white pixels and after a while hundreds of white pixels distributed in every possible way on the screen. The computer manages to make one possible picture every second and after enough time the computer would have simulated every possible (black&white) picture there is. My face, your face, a giraffe, etc. Everything we see is made out of atoms, which have electrons, neutrons and protons and the "universe" combined them like a computer randomly. The difference is that the universe had 13.000.000.000 years (4.745.000.000.000 days/6.832.800.000.000.000 seconds) with roughly 10^85=10.000.000.000.000.000.000.000.000.000.000.000.000.000.000.000.000.000.000.000.000.000.000.000.000.000.000.000.000 atoms to combine them in every possible way. I think its very likely that after such a long time with with so much possibilities to combine the things something really complex would emerge. And even if I dont believed it; this is the reality. First there was just Hydrogen and then all the other elements that combined in so much ways that we and everything around us - so different it may be - is composed of three (just imagine it; JUST 3) fundamental particles. Unbelievable BUT TRUE.
      I know you didnt want a debate, but as i read your text I just had to express this what was on my mind :D
      Now hopefully others have more to think about :D

      Its true that we can say, that animals feel, but its not true, to say that they feel like humans do. It is almost impossible to understand an animal truly but we often humanize animals say we see them smile and stuff like that. We should try to understand them better then we do now, and maybe we shouldnt eat them. I was a vegetarian the last two years and it is really not hard but the question is: is there a moral outside the realm of human being? Is it wrong to ear meat? And if it is why is it? We can just say that its natural for humans to eat meat because we are omnivores and evolved to being able to eat meat. Its not necessary but its also not wrong. What I think is wrong is the lack of respect for our food. It seems like the thought is: If we eat it, its there for us and has no right except being nourishment for us and THAT IS WRONG, because with such a mindset everything we do to the animals is justified.

    Because i got so much backlash in the comments: “Okay. Everyone in this comment thread, let me make on thing clear. I said “it’s funny” and “most” in a way to make fun of mean humans. I have not said that animals aren’t evil too, (i only stated that Koko is nice) and i have not stated that all humans are evil, i just stated that some humans are evil.”

      I wonder if people like Someone who wonders think that because they see an animal that behaves better than how they'd assume most people behave, that makes everyone some sort of evil lesser beings with the themselves being somehow above all over human beings with whoever they believe is nice.
