- Hilarious snippets from a BBC documentary called 'On The Piste', from 1987. The documentary covers a group of British beginner skiers, who have travelled to the Austrian ski resort of Söll.
Skiing in the 80's was far different from modern day skiing, but this group - led by Maureen, Brenda and Kevin - show how skiing should be enjoyed :)
Clips include learning how to get up once you've fallen over, departing a ski lift and ski tow, and enjoying Austrian apres ski.
These guys were part of the Downhill Only Club :)

Thanks for watching! - Komedie
Ahh, skiing. The luxury of travelling to foreign country (usually), snow, fresh mountain air, and copious amounts of après ski booze and fun. It wasn't THAT much different in 1987....

И за рубежом умеют так же бестолково обучать.Вот такой он бизнес.
Even was better, less people on slopes... .
I live in Scheffau the neighbortown of Söll. There are many British tourists still today. They are the best tourists because they are always happy and enjoying themselves. That's the reason I always liked British people. :)
Haha, that's good to hear, thanks! We Brits do love skiing, and always seem to let loose a bit on ski holidays, especially in Austria, but I'm glad you view us in a good light :). Genieße die restliche Saison!
Kevin is using every fiber of his being, every bit of strength he can muster up to move half a foot. I can’t stop laughing 😂😂😂
Haha yes! Should be used for therapy!
Eh?
Half a foot?
That's next week 🤷🏻♂️
Kevin! What an absolute star! Could watch him all day he’s hilarious!
OMG this brings back memories........ I remember watching this documentary with my father, who was born and raised in Slovenia, so learned to ski from a young age. I can honestly say, I had never seen him laugh so much..... and never did again... I laughed like a drain too as I'd been on a skiing holiday when I was 13 and was awful, but I loved it and this documentary really made me chuckle.... Long after my father passed away, I gave skiing another chance, this time in his homeland. I'd always wanted to see Slovenia in the snow and Bohinj didn't disappoint. I was 50 and much less scared. I think I cracked it eventually. I urge everyone to give skiing a go. It's fabulous.
I've taught all levels of skiers over the last 35 years, and believe me, there is ALWAYS a Kevin.
Haha, I bet 😊
Je suis Kevin.

@@ericdunn555I’m Kevin and so’s my wife!
Pissed myself laughing at 16 and pissing myself again at 52 ❤❤
Why wasn't there a Brenda & Maureen reality show?? It would have been hilarious....I always piss myself every time I watch this
This is what I think of EVERY time I come back to it. Dawn French as Maureen!
It’s like a sketch from French & Saunders! 🤣
It's brilliantly funny, although I don't think many parts are meant to be! Just 80's innocence on the ski slopes 😂
It could be the two extras skiing
Wouldn’t it be lovely to catch up on Maureen, Brenda and Kevin now.
I see myself here and I'm laughing very hard. God bless them all. XXXXX
Watching downhill 2024 from Wengen right now. Wengen was the parallel story that ran through same time as these two fabulous ladies did in the neighbouring resort.
The very best of Brits abroad
Maureen says to her friend at one point: "It's one ordeal after another!".
I use this classic line a lot! 😂
Timeless and Priceless CLASSIC
I have this on tape. Just brilliant 🤣
I laughed thru the entire video 😂😅
I'd love to be able to buy this in full. I remember watching it first time around
Ah, amazing! I'd love to find it too :) It's one of my favourite ski videos, and Kevin is absolutely brilliant. I bet Soll has changed quite a bit since then, that's for sure!
Where can we find the whole programme Surely the person who uploaded the funny clips has the full 40 minutes I’d love to show it to my sister who has just come back from Tignes

We was at soll around this time, great fun, I now ski black worldwide, 55 and live skiing

I smiled all through that. Great clip!
Priceless, better than Fawlty Towers
Can't stop laughing! Just brilliant!
That brought back some memories of my first time in Aprica. Equally as hilarious. Mark
Oh golly I laughed so much
Oh how the BBC have changed ...........
Very true!!
The voice over is Funny too. We all know a kevin
It makes me laugh every time I watch it. Poor Kevin - 'On the Piste', should be 'Stay on the piste' for him :)
This reminds of the song ‘On The Piste’ performed by Fascinating Aida at The Lyric theatre in 2000. It’s here on youtube if you search it, anyone else seen it?
Thats a hilarious video. My farther is called Kevin and back in the 1980's at Kitzsteinhorn, Kaprun, had similar problems with surface lifts. Im sure he would apreciate watching this, just to remind him what a prolock he was back in the day.
+Jonathan Cook Haha! I'm sure he'd love it - Kevin is the main character :)
brilliant !!!
"His grasp of the English language may be somewhat limited...." Hilarious.
So wonderfully condescending, isn't it?!
My husband and I were ski instructors in Söll when this BBC program was made.
Let me tell you that what you see on this video was ot ‘the norm’.
Peter was a laugh (but also not ‘the norm’) and picked by the BBC for being (in their opinion) a typical Austrian ski instructor.
The whole idea of this program was to make people laugh and looking at the reactions below they succeeded. They didn’t succeed in promoting skiing.
We watched the program with embarrassment, because the
majority of Sepp Embachers instructors would go about it a whole lot different way. Sepp suggested a different instructor to the BBC but they set their minds on Peter.
In our opinion learning how to ski and at the same time having a great holiday had nothing to do with the ‘stupid’ things shown in this program. We have been instructors for 5 years and we never got our ski groups in so much mess.
Although this program is years old and all the difficult aspects of learning how to ski (like chairlifts, draglifts etc.) don’t exist anymore in Söll. They are all replaced by skier friendly lifts.
I had to react.
Claudia Copping Hi Claudia, thanks for the comment, and lovely insight! I guess normal people wouldn't necessarily make good TV, hence why they chose Peter and Kevin. I think a lot of newbie skiers can relate to the programme as they probably experienced similar hilarious issues, so whilst it might not look like it promoted skiing, I think it showed a nice lighthearted side, which would have struck a chord with a lot of people. Nice to know Soll has improved, as have many resorts across Europe 😊
It reminded me of what a giggle it is when you first start skiing. What a lot of fun!
The BBC always have and probably always will twisted real events to make them funnier, it does make for entertaining viewing in this case!
Funny though!
Even as a beginner skier, this is still hard to watch

Kevin a real one fr
I was born in 1968 and been skiing since 2010. Has skiing evolved much in the past 45+ years? If I started skiing in the early 1970's, would I be using wooden skis, leather boots, and no helmet?
Jon Stewart Hi Jon, probably not far off! Be thankful you learnt later in life 😊
This is the funniest ski video ever! Hilarious! Enjoy! - skimckay.com
It's a belter isn't it? So good. Epitomises everything skiing was in the 80's 😊
whats the snuff taking at the end?
I believe it is a wooden catapult style contraption called a 'schnupfmaschinen' that fires snuff up the nose. I spoke to my Austrian friend yesterday, and she confirmed the snuff machines are still in action in many places today.
The snuff is menthol stuff and great when you have a cold or blocked up nose. After using the 'machine' you ended up with lots of black powder around your nose. The place where this was filmed was the Agerhof where the sleigh was going.
I don't want to tread on Simon's toes, but the whole thing is broken down into 4 parts at SuperBoris1961.
No treading on toes here 😊. I created this version in case people didn't want or have time to watch the full documentary on the other channel 👍🏼
Before everyone went mad about health and safety. Good times!
Health and safety while skiing?
Not a lot of health and safety here!
