Brandon I think Busch originally built the park, Universal bought it but it wasn’t making enough money for Universal so they sold it to an Italian company.
In the late 90s/early 2000s Universal changed ownership several times and each owner had a separate vision + they were poorly managed and in a lot of debt
@@danielmullins9953 They didn't sell it straight to the Italians they took over some time after the recession. Caixa bank bought it off of NBCUniversal.
Long story short, Vivendi/Universal was going through a bad time at some point almost 20 years ago, and made the decision to sell ONE of the actives of Universal Parks & Resorts as a way of saving money. They obviously weren't selling Universal Orlando or Hollywood, so there was only one park left... So they sold it to an spanish bank that a handful of years later sold it to the actual owners, an italian group. And yes, for quite some time PortAventura was considered the third Universal Park, officialy known as Universal Studios PortAventura; even today you can find old signage such as remanents of the "Universal Express" fast passes at some rides. Nowadays it's the only profitable theme park in Spain, but at that time Universal was in a really bad situation.
Daniel Mullins Busch and a Spanish company started the project, Tussauds finished the project, Universal bought it then sold it and then was bought by an Italian company.
I went October 2018 as a solo traveller and loved it. Used the single rider queues and jumped most of the long queues that way. The rides are awesome as are the themes as you discussed in your video. I also noticed the fact they only used one car, would make the queues go down much quicker with two, especially when there was a 50min wait for shambala
Depends on the region tho, Madrid has a pretty great tap water, aswell as Bilbao and the northern regions, but ofc, as you go to the south it gets worse and worse to the point you shouldn't drink it, this is just because these are dry regions, but it doesn't apply for the whole country.
we went in September all inclusive and all fountains in the park worked fine and water tasted fine so maybe just an issue during your stay =/ never seen any negative comments on review sites about the fountains either so definitely just a rare issue... I was worried about drinking from the fountains as i'm funny with water but it was great and despite a lot of water I wasnt ill either... Food was an issue for us. Bland, expensive, not a massive variety especially for picky eaters (need more buffet ones that come as part of inclusive)... Adored the rides though!!!! Dying to go back again
I came here when I was a kid on vacation with my parents. Back then they only had Dragon Khan and Stampeda pretty much. But I still remember it was a very cool park and Dragon Khan is a beast. Can't wait to go there again and try the new additions, they look amazing.
This is definitely on my list for my family. We are in the US (Florida), but my family (2 teens) prefer Europa-Park over even DisneyWorld. Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure is tough to beat. We love, love, love Europa-Park and have been there a couple times. It's very chill, beautiful, fully integrated with the natural surroundings, and now with the newly built hotels in the proximity, makes it even more fun and comfortable. They've done a great job... but there is always room for another amusement park!
you really gotta know where to get your food from here. there’s quite a few places hidden in the corner with great ‘spanish’ food. the little hut in the square in china does amazing tortilla and tomate sandwiches
We go there every year from the U.K. because we can’t afford to go America, we love the place. If you ever go back for a week consider a hotel called the gran Regina hotel. It’s 10 min walk from the park or €5 taxi ride and the hotel is amazing. All you can eat and drink and staff are amazing. Love your review, we always get the unlimited queue jump because it’s hot in September and don’t wanna stand in queues.
Hi, how much extra is a unlimited que jump pass? I have two kids under 7 is there plenty to keep them entertained as big rides could be daunting. Thanks
Umran Mushtaq hi the unlimited queue jump is about €60 per person but worth every penny and yes there is lots for kids to do. They have your usual rides like a pirate ship and smaller coasters and lots of shows. Plus at the end of the day they do an amazing firework display. Not sure if that is from the day the park opens to the day it closes as we only go in September but every night in September there is an amazing firework display.
Umran Mushtaq also I think the only big ride that could be daunting would be shambhala and maybe red force. Everything else isn’t that tall. Feel free to ask any more questions
Furious Baco theme is all about wine. Where Port aventura is located and in general the whole mediterranian area there is an old wine production tradition and thats what furious baco is about
I first saw a picture of it in a holiday brochure in 1995. I finally got to go this year and the park is incredible. Shambhala is my new number 1 coaster.
As a person whose local park is PortAventura, I always recommend to bring your own food, also, I always bring a bottle of water and refill it inside the bathroom. However the golden rule is to NEVER go on a crowded day, because i've never seen them running 3 trains in my life, and when there aren't much people, ride operators are often cool and let you choose your row or even ride the atraction again without having to go trough the queue (One time i rode shambala 3 times in a row without leaving my seat :D)
It’s not Italy, the zone is called ‘Mediterranea’. It is a representation of a ‘classic’ mediterranean fishing village. The thing about the fences... It’s about common sense, we don’t think that’s strange. Water fountains are not usually a problem. Food is regular, I agree. Woody is not huge in Spain, they made it the park pet when they where owned by Universal (maybe even before), and they stuck with him. The thing about using less trains, that’s about the amount of people, I have never felt they are trying to sell more express passes. There’s always 2 or even 3 trains in Dragon Khan in packed days. Great that you loved it. Some of us who have been going to PA since we were a child miss some details that no longer works, especially some FX in atractions.
I was here in the summer vacation and it was for me to a dream that came true! I love Shambhala and Dragon khan so much! I want go back there it was just so amazing!
Your complain about water is very comprenhensible, but it is not PortAventura's fault, in Catalonia (the region where PA is), they have difficulties to get water, there aren't any water sources near (rivers, lakes, underground water...), and for this reason, finding water is not easy, and the water quality is very bad. (Sorry for my bad english 😂)
I don't understand why people complain about the operations. I think they are super. I am here now (end of May) and got to do both Shambhala and Dragon Khan in less then 10 minutes.
I was there today, and apart from Shambhala the coasters were rough to the point that I couldn't enjoy them. Dragon Khan had headbanging, Furious Baco felt like a horse had kicked me in the back at one point, and Stampida was non stop shaking. Shambhala was excellent though, and the only one worth re-riding for me.
I ate waffles with tiny oreo cookies on top. Also, the theming has changed to sesame street. The drop tower is the most intense ride and doesn't have a fast pass lane.
Man they really should give you free entries in their parks. Without your channel I still wouldn't have been on taron at phantasialand, without you I wouldnt be planning to go to europa park or efteling and without you I would be at portaventura next week. You took my fears from (most) rollercoasters. Until recently wild mouse was like my limit but for some reason watching your vids took some of my fears (still afraid of heights though so wont be going on very tall coasters soon) and actually got me interested. I have been to every coaster in phantasialand except black mamba, dont know if I like my legs without ground underneath lol. You said that portaventura is the best park and that is why I really wanna go there and you said how awesome efteling is. I got so many coupons from efteling but never considered it because all I knew was movie park germany and that thing sucks. I have been to disneyland paris and orlando but I was like 8 so dont remember that much from it. So they need to give you anything you make them some money man
This is without a doubt the best park in southern Europe, but there are many others in northern Europe that are much better in my opinion. The main problem with Port Aventura is that the operations are horrible. If you don't have an Express Pass it can be a nightmare, but even if you can afford one you still have issues with closed restaurants or even rides (like Templo Del Fuego which is only open for a few hours even on busy days). This is sad because the park has a lot of potential. It is absolutely gorgeous and there are some great rides (not the best in Europe though except maybe for Shambhala). But honestly I would rather spend a day at Toverland or Djurs Sommerland than in Port Aventura.
Bro that's not Itally, that's a Mediterranean themed area. And please, portaventura world is NOT located in SPAIN, it is located in Catalunya. If you didn't know, there's a new coaster in the Western area. It is a multi-dimentional intamin coaster. Just like the one at Germany movie park. Love your chanel.
I visited Port Aventura and Ferrari Land in october last year. The whole park was totally empty on this day and it was one of the best days at a theme park. It was so much fun to ride Shambhala and Red Force all day. But Dragon Khan wasn't that good in my opinion.
Agree about it being one of the best and most beautiful parks in europe and definitely on them pushing the fast passes really hard. Hate to give in but I wouldn‘t do the park without one if it isn‘t an incredibly calm day - which I‘m not even sure exists over there.
FUN FACT: All the main coasters have clever and funny themings, up to and including their names. My favourite is Shambala (the Himalayas Expedition Coaster) because the name sounds like something exotic like Shangri-la, but it is actually a play on words: it sounds like "s'embala", which is Catalan for "It speeds up"XD
@@usinexiguess "Embalar" means to pack. "Embalar-se" (el reflexiu) means to pick up speed. Or it could also mean "it packs itself", but that doesn't make a lot of sense does it

@@thelord5895 Sounds good, im going with about 10 others and thinking about buying 2 rooms with 5 or 6 in each, is this ok or would we need more rooms because were going 3 days in the park, but are in Spain for a week
The negative thing about PortAventura, as you mentioned, is that the whole park is dedicated to make foreigners spend money. I want to stress the "foreigners" thing because they take advantage of them. In Spain we love PortAventura and I'm pretty sure that almost every student has gone there sometime (there's a tradition of going on a trip when you finish high school and pretty much everybody ends up going round Barcelona). So we all know all the tricks they play and that we will be spending our money, so we usually bring some food ("bocadillos") and water bottles so we can refill them at the restrooms. Anyway, this is a highly recommended park and I can tell you that people from Spain really love it hahaha
I just went to PortAventura last week and, for various reasons, I feel like I barely scratched the surface, but I had a great time. I only had one short-ish day there in the middle of a visit to Barcelona, but I definitely could have gone two or three. To me it had a Busch Gardens-like vibe, and that turns out to be no coincidence--because before Universal, it opened as more or less the European Busch Gardens. Busch Entertainment planned it out and Busch (pre-InBev and SeaWorld) was a co-owner. The remnants of the Universal era are the Woody Woodpecker branding and the skip-the-line system. The non-working water fountains, extortionate, wonky ATMs and old-school, coin-operated ride lockers were my least favorite things. Most of the coasters had bins for loose items on the platform, but one that did not was Stampida. ...Actually I want to expand on the locker situation. You NEED cash coming into the park if you want to use the ride lockers. You can rent all-day lockers at the front, but they're not convenient for stashing loose items before a ride. There's a cash exchange desk with a big Woody Woodpecker sign on it right outside the park gate. You'll want to use that because the ATMs in the park may not work for you at all. But... you will need coins. The ride lockers are 2 euros a pop, take ONLY coins (not cards or bills), and the rental only lasts until you open the locker. It's not a relocatable rental like the ones at Six Flags. This was the single biggest annoyance for me. I initially thought I was hosed and would not be able to ride anything, but fortunately for most of the rides there are bins.
One of my favourite things is the night time shows they hold on the water, the fireworks and lights are gorgeous. Anytime i’ve gone there we always have to stay until dark (Also I wouldn’t usually trust public tap water unless I was stuck? Maybe that’s just me though 🤷🏻♀️ Not all tap water is bad but the water is more likely to be stagnant in warm conditions)
After my time In California, I’ll be heading here for sure! I travel the world riding coasters and eat ice cream - I NEED to experience Shawn’s old favourite Shambhala for myself - Vlogs on my channel. 😘
Thanks a lot for this video! I'm going there in August and I'm so excited...!! One question, they really don't allow you to choose your seat? This is the only thing that scares me in theme parks... like I wouldn't want to ride Shamballah or Dragon Khan in the middle or first row (I'm a back seat person...) Thanks:)
Probably an unpopular opinion, but I'm kinda glad that you're releasing the European park reviews now, as opposed to right after your trip. Having them in mid-winter makes the off-season a bit easier to bear, and it's a nice reminder of what you did last summer. I suspect your reviews are more thoughtful for having some distance from the experience, too.
Brian MacDonald i'm glad! Believe it or not, that is exactly why I am releasing them all now. It makes the off season easier, and it also gave me plenty of time to digest everything and think about my experience at each of these parks, so the reviews are the fairest they can be.

We're getting closer to that shambhala review, chief
is that the blue and white one? i actually went on that one😁 i also went on red force in farrari land😝
@@hxnnxh190 *ferrari* but yes it is, and I have also been on every ride
I went October 2018 as a solo traveller and loved it. Used the single rider queues and jumped most of the long queues that way. The rides are awesome as are the themes as you discussed in your video. I also noticed the fact they only used one car, would make the queues go down much quicker with two, especially when there was a 50min wait for shambala
We had three and a half of queues for shambala even with two trains
I’m from the UK and it’s kinda common knowledge that the drinking water in Spain is to be avoided...stick to bottled water
Depends on the region tho, Madrid has a pretty great tap water, aswell as Bilbao and the northern regions, but ofc, as you go to the south it gets worse and worse to the point you shouldn't drink it, this is just because these are dry regions, but it doesn't apply for the whole country.
yep it's disgusting I went in April
Drinking the water in Spain can make you ill
depending on where u are, wtf u taking bro
@@Coaster_Crazy I'm from England and live in Spain and have never gotten sick from tap water over here.
we went in September all inclusive and all fountains in the park worked fine and water tasted fine so maybe just an issue during your stay =/ never seen any negative comments on review sites about the fountains either so definitely just a rare issue...
Great vid Taylor! You’re such an inspiration to me. Thanks and keep it up!!
now you know how we europeans feel about cedar point. haha
Agreeeee
you really gotta know where to get your food from here. there’s quite a few places hidden in the corner with great ‘spanish’ food. the little hut in the square in china does amazing tortilla and tomate sandwiches
This is my home park, I'm very glad you enjoyed your stay!
I'm planning on going here next March during spring break and I am so excited for Shambhala & Red Force
Taylor, in Spain they use chlorine to clean their water, and that’s why it tastes weird. So if you’re in Spain, buy bottled water :)
Furious Baco theme is all about wine. Where Port aventura is located and in general the whole mediterranian area there is an old wine production tradition and thats what furious baco is about
This is my dream park to go to one day!
Its a 3 in 1 park mate rly good nxt door u got a water world an nxt to tht u have
Ferrari land
There are *sometimes* 3 on shambala, but very rarely and only in summer. Usually 2 max tho
Were going back this year to Salou and will be visiting again. That is why I love Salou always so much to do there.
Why did the thumbnail look like planet coaster for a second XD
Zortos The Best CZcamsR AND THATS A FACT Because it’s such a good game lol
Because the parks that unreal.
No.
I have been here 7 years in a row and all of the water fountains did work and the food is fantastic ❤️
Great honest review. I love the tidbits of random info thats super valuable if I ever get out there
Shambhala has some good pops of mild ejector in the back row. Best of luck choosing your row though. My first ride I was forced onto row four
Furious Baco, Stampedia, Dragon Khan, and Shambhala look like incredible roller coasters.
I live in America and I hope to visit PortAventura one day.
I was here in the summer vacation and it was for me to a dream that came true! I love Shambhala and Dragon khan so much! I want go back there it was just so amazing!
I love PortAventura Park its amazing. me and mum have been 12 times to the park its real cool. hopefully going back this June.
@Totally Unfocused Thanks for the correction, it helps me to improve 😄
@Hamza M Sí, de Madrid
@THERUSSIAN1268 You are right, I use too much commas 😂.
Dudo que le falte dinero a PA para tener agua jajaja con lo que cuesta todo
@@lucasbalfagon4573 Commas can be counted, so it's many commas, not much. ;-)
The mediterranean area is not italian, but spanish. These are pretty similar but there are still differencies.
I love your videos so much you do so good on your videos you are one of my favorite CZcamsrs
Taylor your filming is incredible!
2:09 quote from OVCs PortAventura vid lol
Caleb Reese hehe I just watched that video
Caleb Reese and it’s totally wrong that’s not even what it’s about 😂
I visited Port Aventura and Ferrari Land in october last year. The whole park was totally empty on this day and it was one of the best days at a theme park. It was so much fun to ride Shambhala and Red Force all day. But Dragon Khan wasn't that good in my opinion.
Port aventura is my favorite Europe amusement park 😄😄❤️❤️😍😍
Trust me, In Spain we don't care about woody woodpecker. Its just a PortAventura thing
I’ve been the tree times and I would love to go again next year
Agree about it being one of the best and most beautiful parks in europe and definitely on them pushing the fast passes really hard. Hate to give in but I wouldn‘t do the park without one if it isn‘t an incredibly calm day - which I‘m not even sure exists over there.
End of September beginning of October..no need for fast passes then
Wonderful shots there and great reviews
FUN FACT: All the main coasters have clever and funny themings, up to and including their names. My favourite is Shambala (the Himalayas Expedition Coaster) because the name sounds like something exotic like Shangri-la, but it is actually a play on words: it sounds like "s'embala", which is Catalan for "It speeds up"XD
embala usually is interpreted in catalan as the verb "pack"
so really it sounds like "it packs itself"
@@usinexiguess "Embalar" means to pack. "Embalar-se" (el reflexiu) means to pick up speed. Or it could also mean "it packs itself", but that doesn't make a lot of sense does it
@@borgci4009 it kinda makes sense, im catalan myself and what i really meant was that i dont think ive ever heard someone use the verb "embalar" as in speed
so usually if you said "s'embala" to a catalan person they'd probably think you mean packaging as usually the word is used in that sense
Com he dit abans, em sembla que mai l'he escoltat el verb embalar amb aquell significat
it feels like busch gardens wit the coutries
It was developed by busch and was a part owner till 2004
I'll be staying a week in Salou (where the park is) for a week in may, can't wait to coe back to port aventura. I try and got once a year
Going here June next year with some friends, really excited, spending 3 days, is the hotel worth booking or would an airbnb be better value?
For 3 days I believe a Hotel would be better
Hotel, don't go to a PA hotel though. Go to somewhere like H10 Salauris palace, Regina Gran or Villa Romana. Only a 10 minute walk but are right next to the beach and restaurants.
@@thelord5895 Sounds good, im going with about 10 others and thinking about buying 2 rooms with 5 or 6 in each, is this ok or would we need more rooms because were going 3 days in the park, but are in Spain for a week
OMG! When I was Barcelona in 2017, I was going and my friends backed out. I'll be back Summer '19 and will go by my damn self this time lol.
I'm there on own now. Loads of English speaking visitors and staff
Been Here! Amazing Park! But Merch Is Awful in terms of variety and prices for example in ferrari land a red force mug costs €26 😳😳😳
I was there as well I loved it but the things aren't cheap
I'm visiting Port Aventura next year! Can't wait :)
I live in England and have been to PortAventura 18 times. My next visit will be September 7,2019, when he park is open till 3am.
Anytime i’ve gone there we always have to stay until dark
(Also I wouldn’t usually trust public tap water unless I was stuck? Maybe that’s just me though 🤷🏻♀️ Not all tap water is bad but the water is more likely to be stagnant in warm conditions)
i have been in portaventura twice and i plan to go next year
A thrill park with Disney Level themeing? Nice!
You can always ask for a specific row, but in my experience, they rarely accepted requests. Doesn't hurt to try though.
I rarely got to choose. You ask them nicely and they just point and say "Go!" to like, row four. Ruins the park
They should get a inverted ride
They definitely need one more B&M interacting with Shambhala and Dragon Khan
2:42 What you considered as the Central American area is a part of the Mexican area.
PortAventura is my homepark (I live in south of France) :)
I reeeeally want to love this park bc it is beautiful and has some great rides but omg the one train ops, stacked opening times, closed restaurants, and need for a fast pass killed me. You shouldn't HAVE to buy a fast pass to enjoy a park
Agreed
Try going end of September beginning of October...
The mexico's zone food is amazing
7:55 it's that annoying vulture from Mystery Mine at Dollywood
I’m 17 and I’ve been around 19 times but it’s just amazing
Planning on going at some point this year (2019)
Avoid the summer, as the heat will seriously mess you up after a full day. I got super sunburnt but that's my fault lol
I'm going here in September (2019) and I've been watching so many vids of the park to check it out
The way Taylor kept pronouncing "Shambala" was really upsetting me.
I pronounce it Shum-buh-la lol. Usually shouted
i've been here a few times absolutely love this themepark there is nothing wrong with anything in the park food shops etc also its for kids mostly nobody has complained i recommend this park
I went there on holiday I loved it
Been to PortAventura 12 times and stay in the hotels and I enjoy every minute
That Dragon Khan looks amazing
That thing you mencion about the water it was bad luck because I went to portaventura 3 years in a row, I stay 1 week and I never had that problem. The food is good in China, Mexico and Mediterran zone. This park and Disneyland Paris are the best parks in Europe for me.
2:38 Great park, Great scenary ! Really Like it. No, seriously very nice park and location, and shambala wow !
Reminds me of Zygo Parc in Nice. Crap food in the middle of a food paradise. The whole Woody thing is funny and not surprising.
I've been there like 6 times and I miss it so much
My favourite is the wild west
also woody woodpecker is used to promote portaventura so thats why they use him so much
Does the 50 Euro entrance fee include access to all rollercoasters and rides? Or do you then have to pay separately a fee for each ride too...
A one day ticket includes all rides
