And when I started learning Dutch, people overestimated my ability to speak because my accent sounded much more fluent than I actually was, probably because of the similarity between Canadian and modern Dutch accents. The fact that Dutch sounds like English is certainly because they are both western germanic languages, at their core at least. Both have been influenced by the romance languages, including Latin, but English has to a much langer extent. Studio massa is very pro Dutch and barely uses any mondern English loanwords. In every-day Dutch much more English is used due to the English being a very widely used language and the Dutch fondness of using foreign languages.
