- Although Anna Moffo's voice was not large, it was warm and rich, with soft pastel colorings and a velvety and extended range. Agile coloratura technique allowed her to sing high soprano bel canto repertory magnificently, especially "Lucia di Lammermoor."
Her great beauty gave her the nickname "La Bellissima". - Hudba
Old school opera singers are literally better 10X than modern opera singers.

So late to this thread, but WOW. She was my upstairs neighbor in NYC. Would ride the lift with her occasionally and she was always elegantly dressed and groomed, and so sweet and kind. Just a lovely lady. RIP, bellissima.

One night she was headed out to dinner in an EXQUISITE silk gown and cape and I simply said, “Mrs. Sarnoff, you look stunning” and she blushed and seemed a little embarrassed. After that I stuck to “Good evening, ma’am.”

Смазанные колоратуры и откровенное пренебрежение к автору ради выпячивания эффектных мест для своего голоса. Трудно назвать это эталоном. Вроде и ничего особо критичного, но в результате - уж слишком интерпретировано
@@ALEX-tz9tj Автор написал два варианта - для высокого и низкого сопрано. Артикуляция чёткая, естественное итальянское произношение. И оцените её верхнее "фа"!

Просто за последние -дцать лет мы, конечно, привыкли к виртуозной подвижности голосов и этот гораздо более скромный вариант сложно называть эталоном (именно для «легкого» Россини). И Анна Моффо гораздо сильнее все же не в этом репертуаре, в большей степени я об этом

Такая должна быть Розина, а не с "бароковыми» колоратурами и нулевой плотностью. Не случайно есть и мецо-сопрановый вариант. Посмотрите канал This is opera, там доступно объясняют недостатки "современной школы". Таких как Анна Моффо и Гена Димитрова уже не будет, именно из-за "новой школы".

Colour! Yes...you are 100% correct. La Divina had it aplenty. Anna Moffo had it as well. The camera loved both AM and MC equally well.
The staging in this is is also superb.

Moffo possessed one of the most beautiful voices of our time. Does a woman's voice need to be bombastically loud? I believe that the beauty in her voice is far more desirable than it's loudness. Listen to her high notes; they are every bit as full and rich as her lower ones.
That's what makes her a coloratura soprano: not only she is born with an amazing instrument, she is incredibly talented as well.
I agree with you. She had an unusually beautiful voice, apparently naturally as it was not the least bit artificial or contrived.
Her lower register is so warm and womanly contrasting with her high notes which ring clear as a bell. And always in complete control. Sublime.

It is a Mezzo aria and Cecilia Bartoli sings it better. Anna has a beautiful voice, but it lacks the depth and colour this aria requires.

I just learned that Anna originally tried to enroll in a convent after high school, and was convinced by a priest that she needed to use the voice God gave her. Can you imagine never getting to hear this voice?

I read (elsewhere) that she had to make a big decision early on: whether to go to Rome & learn singing or Hollywood and learn acting. Thankfully, she opted for the former - but she's an excellent actress anyway

+Hildegerd Haugen You said it! Moffo was overall the finest operatic soprano I've ever heard - in a lifetime of listening. Not just a singer; a great musician. Her prime was too short, and it's also a terrible shame that, still, so few have heard her early recordings, which were often in a class all by themselves!
She has a sweet personality and noone beats her Susanna nor her Rosina. She has apart from her gorgeous voice and pretty looks, a sort of charm and joie de vivre that is absolutely irresistible.
So agreed, she was superb in her prime!!

In our times there is a not popular Korean soprano, Myung Joo Lee, with a comparable voice and range. Listen to her e strano on CZcams. Btw... I am not Korean :).
There are a number of great, world class Korean sopranos - headed of course by the great Sumi Jo.
Then there's YoungOk Shin, Hei-Kyung Hong, Sunnhae Im, Kim Eun-Kyong. I have a list of 37 professional Kprean sopranos! Lee Mying Joo sings Traviata very nice - but that's all there is on You-Tube (I heard that she had a position in a European opera house...) You hit it - Korea is the new home of opera: in a recent competition in Montreal, the Koreans occupied 7 out of the final 24 places including the winner; the Canadians had 7 places and the rest of the world only 10!
