    Actually international competition drove progress in space exploration more effectively than cooperation.

      Picky, picky.
      At an international level, perhaps, but the million or so people who worked on the massive number of components in the Apollo ships were cooperating, and now thousands of others are cooperating in the development of SpaceX and many other companies.
      You may remember that the Soyuz launcher and orbital capsules were the only way of getting to the ISS for quite some time, so there is international cooperation, until the Russians queered it.
      The early models of the Ariane launcher were based on British research of the early 1960s, given to the French as part of a sweetener package for cooperation on Concorde by our short-sighted government.
