5 Things I HATE About My VW Polo 9n

  • We all have things we hate about our cars, whether we own supercars or Ladas... But my VW Polo has some interesting quirks that make for a particularly love-hate relationship between us. Of course I love my car and I'm super grateful to own her (she's called Penny), but these 5 things I would happily swap for a better overall driving experience. That said, it's things like this that help us car people to have stronger relationships with our cars; yeah they have issues, but so do we - we're all flawed people (except for me, obviously).
    Major shout out again to all the crew that are supporting me along the way, including Sam, Ed, F90_JW, and Streetmodz

      I have a polo clasic 3(6kv2) from the year 2000. The engine is 1.9 TDI alh with 90hp(5-6l in town). My front windows are electric, the trunk is big, and if I need more space, I can push the backseats in the car.
      I got the car for 1000 euro and the repairs were a bit over 1000 euro.
      You cand find a good,cheap old car.
      I got the same problem with the raining water as you. In the winter, my driver door is freezing so I have to get in from the passenger seat. After 4th gear, the car looses power. And what I dislike the most, I don't have an arm rest. Overall, I love my car.

    I had one of these, named her Polly. The window situation annoyed, she wasn't very fuel efficient and sometimes she wouldn't start straight away but I loved her simplicity and the fact that it was real driving and there wasn't much that could go wrong as there was very little in the way of electrics. Also, I loved headlights, think they're really cute. As a VW she was also very comfy so couldn't complain about long journeys. Unfortunately I lost control of her in the rain and crashed her (my fault not hers) and wrote her off but I do believe she saved my life, very safe in a crash and would not put me off getting another polo in the future.

    • @CarsWithJB
      @CarsWithJB  Před 5 lety +1

      Sorry to hear about the crash, I know what it feels like to write a car off! But yeah agreed the simplicity of the car is a key benefit, as well as the safety aspect - it's also surprisingly spacious inside given how small the car is!

    The door seal holding water is because you have both an inner and outer seal on the door so the rain water gets trapped between the two, you can mod the seal by cutting a little V in it at the bottom to let the water run out.
    If your fan blower only works on full speed then your heater resistor is gone and needs replacing

    I have a 1.2 litre Polo 9N as well but mine is the 12v version with 64bhp. I don't have rolldown windows in the front they're electric and I don't have the problem with the rain. She's my first car and I've owned her for a year and a half. She is slow but I think she's still a good car. I like the round headlights in my opinion because they're like the old Beetle's and it's very economical. I'm 6ft 4 and I find it sooo comfortable to drive it's amazing how it's so spacious inside given the relative space on the outside. The boot is small but quite normal for a hatchback and it doesn't give me any problems at all mechanically so I couldn't have asked for a better first car in my opinion. Plus it handles corners like an absolute beast the chassis is amazing.

    • @CarsWithJB
      @CarsWithJB  Před 6 lety +5

      They definitely do have a charm to them! I'll definitely follow this video up with a '5 things I love about my VW Polo 9N' because there are a lot of things to like about the car as you've mentioned. You're definitely right about chassis - it is really good, compared to my old car she turns like a dream. Obviously I was spoiled before with my Skoda Estate with the boot space because I could fit a BMX or my golf clubs in the back easily, which I can't in the Polo (but most cars wouldn't be able to anyway haha). As a first car (or as a second car for me) 100% the 9N is a great choice, cheap insurance and cheap to buy as well. I'm jealous of your extra 10hp though haha

    • @maltesegamer98
      @maltesegamer98 Před 6 lety +1

      Yeah they do have a lot of things to love. Here in Malta they hold their value relatively well. Believe me I understand where you're coming form in terms of boot space we have an Opel Zafira 7 seater and a Peugeot 307 estate which have massive boots in comparison. I don't carry much from day to either way and a quarter of my boot is taken up by my subwoofer. Oh yeah and on the power 10hp isn't a massive difference haha It's quite nippy for a 3 cylinder engine though I can almost keep up with my friend who has a 1.4 litre petrol with 75hp. I was thinking of making a buyer's guide for anyone wanting to buy a 9N as well, I was pleasantly surprised to find this video

    • @CarsWithJB
      @CarsWithJB  Před 6 lety +1

      That's really cool - I came to Malta in 2014 and the car scene was really cool, considered importing a classic car from Malta to the UK as well because of right-hand drive. Yeah that makes sense - I feel like the Polo is perfect as a runaround/first car/canvas for modifications, and a good car to learn in/on. Haha I'll take any extra hp I can get! That would be a good idea - I'm glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for the support :)

      Got 1.4 2003 16v model. It is slow as hell when you're trying to move off the traffic light but once it gets going it goes like any other car. I do drive like an old man though (no point in trying to race when you will just embarrass yourself). I do hate the massive body roll when cornering (worse when it's a long corner). But the engine is smooth and reliable. I've done close to 50k miles in the last 3 years, never had any trouble. I've had to top up engine oil every few months though... Quite used to it now. I've got front electric windows which is handy. Spent a lot on suspension components though. Coz they failed mot. But it's a common problem among polo's. Although I like the car, I do feel like an old man when on it. Haha

    From what I've read, the 9N used to have thinner door seals. The water used to flow out no issue, however at higher speeds the door made an annoying whistle. So to rectify it, later 9Ns and the 9N3 had a thicker door seal fitted. This meant however the original water channels were unable to clear the water, hence why it falls out on your feet. My 9N3 does it with the rear doors, but not the front ones.

    I have a Polo 9n3, the facelift version of the 9n and it’s a German LDH 5-door car in silver. Mine has the 1.9 TDI with 101hp which makes it plenty fast. 0-60mph in 8.6 seconds and a top speed (measured with GPS) 133mph (215 km/h). Fuel economy is great. I get about 51.3mpg - 70.6mpg (4l - 5.5l/100km) depending on the temperature, driven speed and the overall weather conditions. I never had big issues with my car although I can confirm that if it rains, you do get wet feet sometimes. For the rest of your points, I can’t agree. I have electric windows in the front and in the back, I have an electric sunroof (the drain clogs up fast), cruise control, heated seats, electric mirrors, park distance control, fog lights, automatic climate control and even a light sensor. I love my car and I really don’t want to give it away some day. It’s very reliable, never let me down and it took me places I’ll never forget.

I've actually found the car fairly nippy, i was suprised going from a 1.4 to a 1.2 but it didn't suck as much as i thought (until i have other passengers weighing the car down) I also have a 3 door whereas before i had 5 so that also annoys me. The car certainly isn't built for speed, but I've upgraded everything as it's needed replacing. Full service, K&N panel filter, straight through cat back exhaust, but best of all, a Whiteline ARB at the back. Vperformance on CZcams does a before and after with the same roll bar which made me get one, plus they have an install video. Now instead of understeering everywhere, it sticks like mad. Definitely worth a look!

But its quite quick if I floor it out of a roundabout in 2nd gear. The leader steering wheel is awesome but I feel very cramped at 6'3 behind the wheel. My knees touch dashboard and on long journeys my leg and feet Hurt. AC doesnt work good, its just loud af and doesnt blow much air. And fuel consumption ist very high for that engine. Even If my mum drives it rarely gets sub 6l. If you drive "sporty" its 8l. Also I just hit 200k km and apart from rusty exhaust pipe not any big repair

    I own a 9N3 GTI. It has 106HP more than yours. People might think that it really chugs on petrol, of course if you floor it the whole time then that's obvious. If you drive normally then I averaged 8.2l per 100km on 95 RON and abut 7.6l/100km. That is roughly 28.7mpg and 31mpg respectively. Not bad for a 1.8T with 150PS and 220Nm of torque.

No back doors/opening windows at back. 3. Lack of power (only bothers me when I switch between driving other cars with four cylinders and 10 horsepower more lol) 4. The doors are heavy and huge. 5. That when I close the doors they need to be slammed or they won't fully close unless windows open (air lock). 5 things I love. 1. It's a VW, well made and reliable if maintained. 2. It feels like a big car when driving and comfortable on long journeys. 3. Electric Windows, air con, electronic heated mirrors, aux cable. 4. Easy to drive, very light controls and easy to park, good visibility and small. 5. It seems VW has listened to you and many others as they have sorted all and bettered Polo. I have 2017 Match Edition 1.2 TSI Bluemotion 90 PS. Definitely nippy while it is also very economical. I regularly go from Surrey to Wales and still have nearly half tank fuel. Not so so bad considering I've only been driving since Feb. My clutch control is still erratic at times. Gear changes are not always smooth enough. Just as you said no cars are perfect. I wish they made the seats little more comfortable and drive dynamics little better round the corners as sometimes the body lean is excessive when going at speed. Boot space is significantly improved with adjustable floors. I managed to fit a VW Subwoofer as standard audio is rubbish on 2017 6R models..2018 Vw has slightly better audio when I tested it in the courtesy car. I would get better fuel efficiency if I didn't have the very heavy subwoofer with amp built in that also amplifies other speakers. The water by the door is very minimal without getting your shoes wet. Bear in mind when water drips down that then makes the section below door wet however the seal protects water going inside or excess water sitting. The noise insulation on my VW is the best I've had. Hardly any road noise when listening to music with normal volume. Road noise on 2018 Polo is slightly higher though.

    Now I own a 2016 Suzuki Swift Sport 1.6 with 140hp , weighs 200kg less than the Clio and does 60 in about 8 seconds whilst being an absolute hoot to drive quick.
    Next car is going to be a Fiesta ST or 208 GTI , feels like I need to go faster every time I buy a car now and I live in the sticks in Scotland where my commute involves me driving b roads so I can actually enjoy my car.

    I've got a 1.2 9n 55hp. I've owned it since April 2015 and got it from 81,000 to 120,000 miles and counting.
    Soon after I got it my parents and I had a fortnight holiday round Scotland and later this year the three of us will be off around Europe in it with any luck getting a trip to the Nurburgring in (yes I know it ain't fast). I've also done numerous weekend trips between the Lake District and Cornwall racking up some 900miles in 4days mostly at on the A30, M5 & M6 and it just pounds on at 70 without deafening me or trying to be an oven. Though most of my driving is on narrow country lanes where it is more at home.
    Mine has had odd quirks here and there including two ignition coil failures, ABS fuse cracked for no reason, manual windows and the drivers door lock barrel collapsing traping the keys in the door and costing £101 for a new local barrel from VW. Can't say I've ever had the water in the doors problem though.
    All this said I have grown very, very fond of my 9n and will not be letting it go anytime soon, esp as I've just put £250 of tyres on it.

    • @CarsWithJB
      @CarsWithJB  Před 6 lety +1

      It's so crazy how we can become so attached to cars - your Europe trip sounds a lot like what I did last summer, 3 of us drove around Europe and did the Nurburgring in my Skoda Fabia Estate 1.2, have a watch of this video if you want some inspiration for your trip /watch?v=6xZy8Z88Ks4 (honestly, best holiday of my life - and made me even more in love with that car). The coils are always an issue on these engines - I've had 4 go in total, but it's an easy fix at least. The lock barrel seems like a bit of a mad issue, but yeah overall the 9n is such a great car, well worth all the little quirks. Thanks for watching!

    • @HIDLampDashcam
      @HIDLampDashcam Před 6 lety

      The lock barrel certainly was random but isn't a bad job to do only needing one hex key to do.
      The last time I had a holiday like this was about 2004 in my parents 1988 Land Rover 90. If you think the 9n is slow you've not been in the Land Rover, 0-60 in 28secs with an alleged top speed of 74mph (motorway cruise of 55-60), it's noisier too. In that we went further covering about 3000miles down into the middle of France.

Sweet as, no more no starts and eps abs etc dash lights. I've put another 30,000km of trouble free driving... Only thing besides the no guts 1.4L the trip meter will not go past 2,000km, resets every time, strange. I also put mk4 Bora headrests and 17 inch wheels and put the boras ventilated rear disc brakes on it(need shims for the caliper bracket). Afterwards I had a rattle that would go away when brakes applied. Turns out I must have got some caliper slides mixed up. I had a slide that stepped down at the end and it would rattle quite noticeably from the rear left. I put the other slide from old caliper on which is same thickness all the way, rattle gone. Oh and the Bora i bought off a customer for 100 bucks. He blew up the engine. And the funny thing, I got 150 bucks for scrap value of the Bora when I was finished raping it for parts 🤣
