Umakant and Ramakant Gundecha are leading exponents of the Dhrupad style of Indian classical music (Ramakant Gundecha passed away in November 2019). Born in Ujjain in central India, the brothers were initiated into music by their parents. They pursued their education at university, alongside which they received lessons in the art of Dhrupad under the renowned vocalist Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar and the distinguished Rudra Veena exponent Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar. There was a conscious effort on the part of their Gurus to get them to sing in unison while retaining their individual styles. The Gundecha Brothers have expanded the repertoire of Dhrupad performances with their complex jugalbandis. It has been said that Dhrupad’s ability to connect the soul to something more profound, is experienced most fully by listening to their music.
In the third edition of the Bengal Classical Music Festival held in Dhaka in 2014, the members of the audience were greatly moved by the spiritual appeal of the Gundecha Brothers’ rendition of Raga Jog.

I have no awareness about the deepness of this kind of music but I hear this whole hour silently.

    দুই বছর ধরে অনেক অমূল্য অনুভূতি মিস করছি, সম্ভব হলে পুনরায় উৎসবটি চালু করার বিনীত অনুরোধ জানাচ্ছি।
