Hey Dr. Franklin, I'm curious about this person's case. Was she going to have jaw surgery because her teeth weren't meeting on one side? If so, this sounds similar to me as I have a posterior unilateral open bite meaning my teeth aren't touching on one side and have been recommended for jaw surgery and was wondering if I could avoid it. Thank you and good job working with this patient!

Thank you, She was told she needed total temporomandibular joint removal surgery. She was not a jaw surgery case and, no, this therapy never takes the place of jaw surgery.

Did this woman have a frenectomy, or did she achieve these results purely through myofunctional therapy? I am wishing to avoid a frenectomy, if I can. Thank you : )

She did not have a frenectomy. She was evaluated by an ENT and Allergist and found to have nasal airway issues requiring nasal surgery and control of allergies. Once she was able to breathe nasally consistently, we initiated myofunctional therapy - a program I created after specializing in myofunctional therapy for almost 44 years. The primary cause of orofacial myofunctional disorders I have found are nasal airway problems and habit with reduced muscle strength ( which is what I work on) not frenectomies. Some people need a frenectomy but that is not the primary cause in my opinion.
