- Land use is critical to having more housing available within easy walking and cycling distances to other meaningful destinations. Pocket neighborhoods or cottage courts are another way to introduce gentle density to communities where large-scale multi-family developments may not be preferred or feasible.
Ross Chapin is arguably the foremost expert and most experienced professional working in this space and he is the author of the best-selling book Pocket Neighborhoods: Creating Small Scale Community in a Large Scale World
The setting for this short film, which I produced a few years ago, was a workshop tour during an annual gathering of the Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU) in Seattle.

Background:
Hi Everyone! My name is John Simmerman, and I’m a health promotion and public health professional with over 30 years of experience. Over the years, my area of concentration has evolved into a specialization in how the built environment influences human behavior related to active living and especially active mobility.
Since 2010, I've been exploring, documenting, and profiling established, emerging, and aspiring Active Towns wherever they might be while striving to produce high-quality multimedia content to help inspire the creation of more safe and inviting, environments that promote a "Culture of Activity" for "All Ages & Abilities."
The Active Towns Channel features my original video content and reflections, including a selection of podcast episodes and short films profiling the positive and inspiring efforts happening around the world as I am able to experience and document them.
Thanks once again for tuning in! I hope you find this content helpful and insightful.

Wish I could find a neighborhood like this to move to ❤
Indeed! It is also worth noting that we must come together to encourage our cities to change their exclusionary single-family housing codes, which make designing and building these neighborhoods difficult, if not outright illegal. Thanks so much for tuning in. Cheers! John
Amazing, the feel seems like a mixture of a medival, modern look with a touch of nature
Definitely a comfortable feeling of closeness and not too close, yes, a wonderful sense of being integrated in nature. Thanks for watching. Cheers! John
To say this is gorgeous would be an understatement. 😍
Yes indeed! Thanks so much for tuning in. 🙌
I was reading some ideas about trying to make our neighborhoods "15 minute neighborhoods," meaning 15 minutes walk to work, to school and to various shops.
Yes! It is very empowering to live in a place where one can meet their daily needs within a 15-minute walk, or I'd also add an easy 15-minute bike ride. Thanks so much for watching. I hope you are enjoying the Active Towns Channel. Cheers! John
That’s a healthy way to live!
Hah! I just discovered pocket neighborhoods two days ago! Looking forward to this.
@Korina42, Fabulous! We'll chat with you then. Cheers! John
Wow John. This is so inspiring. Thanks for reposting this important content and allowing us to discover. Amidst all the burgeoning active infrastructure media out there, this is so unique and refreshing. This pocket concept is pure creativity and innovation, it could so easily be applied anywhere and in any design style. A very moving piece. Thanks.
@Mike Owen, Thanks much, so glad you liked it. Yes, we frequently mention land use and the need for housing closer to meaningful destinations as critical factors when talking about active mobility networks, so I thought it would be good to bring this classic example of gentle density forward as food for thought. Cheers! John
Thank you!
Thanks for tuning in! 😀
Great video and wonderful way to design a pocket neighborhood.
Thanks so much! Yes. These remind me of the cottage courts seen in Pasadena and the Glendora area that were built in the 20's and beyond. Cheers! John
I love this!!
So happy you really liked it and hope you enjoy some of the other content on the Channel as well. Cheers! John
Cant wait, always great content here! :)
@Jacob-86, Thanks so much for joining us... It was a quickie. Cheers! John
What gorgeous neighborhoods! Do you happen to know how much land they're on? I'm wondering about the density. My town needs to grow, a lot, and quickly; they're attempting to use infill, because we have private timberlands on one side, the Pacific Ocean on the other, and agricultural lands all around; of course the NIMBYs are loud, but they're being worn down.
Those pocket neighborhoods look beautiful, and I'm guessing affluent (which is fine; everyone needs a place to live); I'm just wondering if they're dense enough for Arcata's needs. Maybe on a smaller scale, with smaller houses; us old folks don't need all that much space.
Thanks for the video; those were really lovely neighborhoods, and I loved the layers of personal space.
Thanks so much for watching Korina. I will reach out to Ross so he knows you have some specific questions. Cheers! John
@@ActiveTowns Aww, thank you so much John!
Is there a parking pad on the "Back" of the house? Wasn't sure what to call it back or front.
Not necessarily... there was however, covered parking, I believe, immediately behind me when I snapped this thumbnail photo for the video. Thanks so much for watching. Cheers! John
I have no clue to what lifestyle outside of a pocket neighborhood is about I grew up in one in the Midwest city of Milwaukee Wisconsin USA ✌️💯
Very cool! Thanks so much for watching and sharing. Cheers! John
Wow!!
By the way I did interview Ross on my Podcast (audio-only version) as well: www.activetowns.org/2021/05/27/exploring-pocket-neighborhoods/
Very interesting
Glad you think so!
This is where I want to move when I leave NYC. Where is it?
Both of these are in the Seattle area. More information can be found on Ross Chapen's website - Link in the video description. Thanks so much for watching. Cheers! John
Houses a bitvtoo vlosectogether fir my taste. I livevthe concept however. I would need a bit more personal space between myself and my neighbors in the tiny house neighboehood. Lovely concept. I dovwish I had started something like this 20 years ago. Ive invested wrong State, but grest old house. 💙🙏🤗
Yep, that's kind of the point. More choices in housing types are a good thing. Other versions of this basic concept can easily be done if they weren't illegal in most places. Thanks for watching, Donna. Cheers! John
Where is this?
The neighborhood is just outside of Seattle, WA. There should be links in the video description. Thanks so much for watching. I hope you are enjoying the Channel. Cheers! John
Once again Boomers create a child free utopia.
As I understand it there are families with children living in these neighborhoods.
