It was the height of Warner trying to make hits out of him. To them, they thought that what eventually would become the album we have now would sell well. And it did, but at the expense of Eric's own creativity. Behind The Sun dealt with that even more-so due to Money and Cigarettes flopping, which meant that many songs on that album, including One Jump Ahead of the Storm were scrapped to make room for more commercially palatable songs. But the trade-off is that we got Eric to collaborate with Jerry Lynn Williams, which gave us many of his greatest songs. Needless to say, Eric adapted to pop incredibly well, and it still remains my favorite period of his.
