  • In the context of a global food system and 24-hour retail groceries offering every imaginable food 365 days a year, the dictum to “eat more plants” may be dangerous to human health due to unaware excessive consumption of oxalates. Dramatic increases in calcium-oxalate kidney stones, and functional problems with digestive health, neurotoxicity (sleep, brain function), inflammation (pain, autoimmunity, cellular stress, fatigue), and connective tissue instability (osteoporosis, arthritis, vulnerability to injury) are all consistent with increased oxalate toxicity. Learn how modern food choices and meal patterns create the conditions for accumulation of oxalate in the body, and how oxalates create metabolic havoc. This session explains how modern foods and medicines increase susceptibility to oxalates; makes the case for careful attention to oxalate consumption; dispels the notion that all vegetables and seeds are healthy and safe to eat on a regular basis; and introduces the therapeutic benefits of a low-oxalate diet.

      @GROID-19 resistance training. doesn't matter how good your diet is, you aren't going to put on muscle without some form of training. protein is also required of course, but that's beside the point. her muscle tone says absolutely nothing about whether "she's doing something right" in regards to diet, besides getting as much protein as any other non-impoverished modern human

    My dog stole a stuffed grape leaf off the table at a party and almost died. Had all the toxic reactions and even bled when trying to Pooh. It was horrible. I am grateful though because it set me on a path to look at these toxins in vegetables. It is a lot to process, but we need to. The “healthy and plant based diet” is not necessarily so good long term.

    I had a professor in the 90’s in college in toxicology class who mentioned oxalates (along with a plethora of other defensive plant compounds) as potentially harmful to humans in quantity. I mainly just avoided spinach and some night shades, save tomato, because I like it. Anyway, avoiding sugar for years I got sucked into the other “super foods” - mainly almond, turmeric and raspberries in way too high amounts. I still eat from the plant kingdom, but no lectin and in very small portions and from the low oxalate groups. She is spot on. Paleolithic man was not eating almond flour pancakes with added turmeric and covered in a cup of raspberries (like I was). Eventually I will add some things like raspberries back, but mainly in season and in small amounts.

    I definitely think some people are more sensitive to high oxalate foods. When I went Paleo a few years ago and started eating berries, nuts , dark chocolate , sweet potatoes etc. I started becoming very stiff and achey. It was very scary. After a lot of research and found out about oxalates I knew it was the problem. Stopped eating them and stiffness went away. Binged on some nuts a couple years later and could barely move the next day. I've loosened up the past few months on some nuts and potatoes and cocoa powder and my knees came up stiff. So back to very low oxalate diet. My muscles and joints are very sensitive to oxalate rich foods. My brother was prone to kidney stones and I told him about oxalates as he liked nuts and chocolate. He hasn't had one since. It's real and could be affecting you and you don't realize it.

    Glad I found these resources. I tested positive for high oxalates last year. The ND said to avoid spinach and take some calcium citrate with meals. I didn't think much of it until I ended up in the emergency room this week. The staff could not diagnose my problem. I only put it together after reviewing your material. Cutting out spinach is not enough! I must have had severe oxalates in 2017-2018 as I experienced severe neuropathy and nerve pain. I switch to "super-foods" during that time.

      To the High Ox. list, I wonder if Brussels Sprouts could be added? And if Asparagus is Low to Moderate Oxalates? (it seems to me that I've read both; maybe it's a variable food -? ). On a different subject, I've read in a few informal places online that Moringa Leaf (and therefore 'Moringa powdered supplements', which many people use for desired health benefits) is High Oxalate or Very High Oxalate. ~ Do you know if that can be confirmed, through some kind of verifiable semi-authoritative source? I know of a person, friendly, who probably needs to know that she's not doing her health any favors by consuming it regularly. However, I don't have a solid source to refer her to. (so that she can confirm it, for herself)
      For my own situation, I would like to know definitively about the Oxalates level of: pink grapefruit. It's one food that I haven't been able to drop. Or so it seems for now. Comparatively, I found dark chocolate somewhat easy to quit. My method was to temporarily use *white* chocolate as a "step down" (substitute) for approx. 4 weeks. It had to be a high quality, good tasting brand, of course. Gradually I was able to quit, both chocolates, as a daily habit. Conversely, ...
      I'm hoping that grapefruit - eating a whole one, every day - isn't too bad in Oxalates. However am willing to accept the truth. Unfortunately, I don't live in a locality where I can easily have access white grapefruit, which I've heard isn't so bad in oxalates. Ideally, I would like to have a choice of which grapefruit to buy. (Citrus is a food I've always loved). Anyone know about the oxalate level of pink grapefruit? -- and a source where I could confirm it, definitively? Thanks.

    Glad to see some in Weston Price addressing these issues. I think we need to look further back than a few generations, since many of the plants we eat today either didn't exist just a few thousand years ago, or were much smaller and less sweet.

    WOW! Besides learning so very much about oxalates, I finally figured out how the antagonist in my next novel will kill an old professor. Sorrel soup.
    I was searching for a solution for my disabled son's kidney stones. He has advanced stage MS. The miracle cure diets that people are trying to push on him - well, I may have figured out the culprit.

    Your education is very important and helpful. I have interstitial cystitis vulvodynia and a bunch of other issues. I’m trying so hard to get the pain to go away and I recently I’m learning that all the spinach and the celery is literally doing more harm.     Thank you. I realize now that I didn’t have what I thought was gout because of the systems of all my joints. Being a 150 lbs male. After blood tests it showed negative and my blood healthy after a month of fasting. In the past 7 years I’ve been monitoring my food choices closely. These days I eat alone.

    An year ago every morning I was eating a green shake, rucola + spinach + almonds, after a few months I start feeling like shit, I didn't know why. After a while a found about plants toxicity and I remove the shake from my diet, the rest of my diet remained the same. In a couple of months I was like new.

    I nearly killed myself eating about a pound of spinach a day... was having pure chaos in all my organs and was having the worst/scariest symptoms I’ve ever felt... took 5 months of learning how to eat better to finally go full carnivore..and now I feel BETTER than I did 5-8 years ago! I’m sure eating some veggies here and there won’t kill you but don’t over do it at all.. after watching this video, I now know why my thyroid was shot beyond function... hopefully time will heal that.

    Some of those plants listed as low oxalate toxic were the very plants that made me realize that plants were making me sick. I had to eliminate kale and spinach completely. I was eating about 5-7 cups per day in salads but when I cut them out I stopped having horrible cramping and stomach pains. 😬

      I wonder if tea would be better (i.e., safer) if it were: 1) room temperature, or cold temperature, brewed -- as some delicate tea leaves allow, and 2) loose leaf tea, and not overly processed and put into a tea bag; and 3) not brewed for too long. That way, it seems to me, you'd be getting a gentle extract (a.k.a. "infusion"?), rather than consuming components from the tea leaves which are (more) aggressively stripped from it ... say from over-processing of the tea leaves and then hot-water soaking?
      As a possible analogy, when harsh solvents are used to extract the desired psycho-active compounds from Kava Kava (plant) root, then it has a much higher content of cytotoxic compounds in the resulting "brew". However, when slightly warm water is used instead, then the amount of cytotoxic compounds resulting (such as certain "kavains", for example) is much less.
      How the (green) tea is prepared might make a big difference. On the other hand, maybe this is merely wishful thinking on my part :), and regular non-herbal tea is best avoided altogether. I do know that drinking such tea, alongside food or supplements containing the B vitamins, will result in very significant reduction of the body's ability to absorb and use those B vitamins. Therefore, it's important to consume tea separate from such food, by about 2 hours at least, according to Elliot Overton. Maybe other nutrition experts will give a different interval of time, however, ... for minimizing tea's negative effect on nutrient absorption. I hope tea is OK in moderation (???) but will eventually accept whatever the true answer turns out to be . More 'layperson research' is needed, on my part, before I will hopefully find the actual answer. In the meantime, I am trying to limit my (green) tea to one serving per day, and not having it "strong brewed".
      It's dark chocolate that I'm having a harder time with -- giving up, that is. It's a good way to "mood alter" in the short run, but I suspect it's very unhealthy for me (in the long run). I'd really like to know if Kava Kava has high oxalates. (drinking the traditionally prepared "tea" version of it, that is) I'm afraid it probably does, but haven't been able to confirm it yet.

    So interesting. I try my best to listen to my body when choosing my foods. In the past year I completely stopped eating spinach and stopped turmeric in the past couple months. I was eating a pound of spinach a week and would take turmeric capsules for pain with my period. Now I realize why my body didn’t want those things anymore.

      Eggs, bacon, minced meat, steaks, fish, liver - i also drink coffee, have an occasional avocado and 99% dark chocolate. Once you get over carb withdrawal you have kicked the addiction and food is not the poibt of your life. I eat something and I go. I am not consumed by thoughts of food. Not anymore :)

      People are imbalanced. I get sick on lots of food, my stomach is hyper sensitive. Chinese vegetables are great.bok choy, onions,chestnuts, and tropical fruits.i stick to fish and chicken, but sticking to fish. I just need to stick to the diet.

    I don't understand how the solution would be to avoid those foods or only use their extracts. That would not reflect a 'natural' diet at all. Root plants have been in our diet since forever.
    I'm getting the impression that the research is not developed far enough to be taking drastic action. Almost every time someone tries an elimination diet you hear them coming back a few years later with a new problem. For now I'll be sticking to a nice varied diet with a bit of everything, like a food rectangle instead of pyramid.

      Steve, you ought to be concerned about the fructose in those dates. Oxalate poisoning is one thing, fatty liver disease is another. Humans are not evolved to live on dates.

      Are you sure that fructose in fruit causes fatty liver disease? Personally I find it almost imposible to get my daily calories without eating a high sugar/fruit diet. Unless I spike up on added sugar or oils. The healthiest I ever felt was when I ate daily banana + hemp seed + coconut oil smoothies with a few supplements.

      @@steveharper879 Hi Steve fructose metabolism in excess does lead to fatty liver. Fructose is metabused in the liver in a vry similar way to alcohol. Not having a crack at you but never in the course of human history have people survived let alone thrive on shakes of plants.

    I discovered Baru nuts checked out their information and stated they where tested for oxalated and where free of them, compared to most other nuts which are full of oxalates. I still eat almonds, walnuts, chia just reduced the amount and make up with Baru nuts which besides being oxalate and highly nutritious they taste amazing as well.

    An arthritis story. A year and a half on strict Keto (eating my dark greens and moderate protein) for one autoimmune disease, off meds for that in 3 months. On methotrexate for my RA still. Manage to taper off a wee bit, but extreme pain in my hands when I tried to go below 12.5mg. After several months of attempts to taper off I began carnivore. After 1 month of carnivore I tried tapering again and was off methotrexate in 2 weeks, no problems. Another week and I had a small kale salad 2 days in a row just to see what happens, 2nd day extreme pain in my hands. Back on carnivore. After another week I tried again, maybe it was just a coincidence, pain returns. So I stay carnivore another couple of months, had an extreme rash for several months, then it disappeared. I've since been able to eat a bit of green veggie but I remain very heavy meat Keto and remain pain free and off all medication.

    Chia seeds hurt my stomach. I used to make a breakfast smoothie. And every time I did my stomach hurt so bad. I figured out what it was. I did eliminate the Chia but I stopped making them.

    For kidney stone prevention, the top lifestyle change recommended by urologists seems to be increasing water consumption. Looking through the scientific literature, I've seen it written that 90% of calcium oxalate stones can be prevented if a person drinks 2.5 liters of water per day. Increased water = less concentrated oxalate for the kidneys. I wonder how much simple hydration could reduce the other oxalate-related health problems that Sally mentioned.

    I wonder if oxilates are the reason of the recommendations of acids as dressings (vinegar, lemon) do the acids and oils on salads help to process the oxilates?. Does cooking the greens and vegetables help with processing oxilates? I have read that cooked veggies are much easier on the digestive system than raw. I have a lot of research to do.

    Ive had chemical sensitivity, mainly antibiotics and artificial scents. I did not realize that was from oxalate toxicity, wich I discovered after ending up in hospital from passing kidney stones, Ecoli , and medication reaction.

      Not likely it's probably because the drop of carbs if you are avoiding certain foods. Low cab=low glucose and if you don't have good fat burning ability your going to have to develop fat adaption that's all. Basically a transfer from glucose to fat as primary energy source.

    Wow thank you ! I overeat oxylates, had no clue! I’ve been sick sick for years! I’ve been on organic juice diet for extended periods with no results of energy or wellbeing. I’m currently transitioning to carnivore but of course I would have greens, nuts, avocados for a “healthy” side. Thank you so so much ! God bless 😃

    I am on carnivore woe last 6 months and feel great but also have few healt issues which don't resolve as fast as I wish they did. I learnt about oxalates recently and going to make some tweaks to the diet. My family member on standard diet has been suffering from vertigo for many years with bad attacks. No doctor could help her. Whe listening recently to Sally and her talking about crystals I suspect there might be connection as the family member was diagnosed with crystals located in her inner ear which she gets inflamed often. Sally also mentioned that oxalate crystals may form around inflammation sites in our body.

    I don’t know if I have mast cells disorder or what I do know I have or have had Bartonella coinfection to Lyme disease and Ehrlichia anyways I’ve been consuming almond milk protein powder and blueberries in my morning shake today I decided to put celery in it as well 2 sticks and about an hour later at the gym I felt like I was going to pass out my heart was racing I got a little itchy you seem to be like an allergic reaction or something or maybe it was oxalates, I need help I also have celiac disease

    If calcium citrate helps eliminates and stop oxalates growing in the body then maybe a high oxalate food like spinach, which also has high levels of calcium citrate, is not as bad as a lower oxatale veg with no calcium citrate?

    Thank you! Such sensible info. I have actually struggled with weight gain since I went low oxalate? Thank you for your positive approach and the list of healthy things ( greens ) to eat. I have asked two dietitians for a safe list and neither of them could deliver. I think I am afraid to eat anything. And honestly the list are very confusing. On one list it will say sweet potatoes are a replacement for potatoes on another they are high oxalate. I saw hemp seeds on both high and low list as well. Do you have a low oxalates list of things that are safe to consume?

    I love this presentation and love the work being presented by Sally Norton. Ive learned a lot from her research. However, I wonder what she thinks about phytic acid, and also what she thinks aboit goitregens. I recently stopped avoiding spinach because i realized that eating plain arugula or plain lacinato kale litetally tastes so bad that maybe its my taste buds telling me something. And when I eat plain spinach it tastes super good. I really enjoy the taste of spinach. The taste of arugula and lacinato kale are so bitter it makes me think maybe its my bodies way of telling me its poisonous in some way. I just feel like eating greens plain by themselves should taste good as if you found it in the wild you would want to keep eating it. The lacinato kale is horrible tasting. Arugula isnt as bad. I was avoiding spinach for quite awhile because of the oxalates, and in that time at some point I quit eating peanuts because of phytic acid, lectins, and possible aflotoxins. I quit eating the potatoes for several reasons as well, lectins, the fact theyre a nightshade vegetable, and the oxalates. Removing peanuts and potatoes which are also not in line with my northern european ancestry, just so happened to happen during the time I finally cured my insanely bad digestive problems. I also around the time of removing them both also started eating large salads free of most antinutrients and adding cod liver oil all coincided with this healing of my gut. Now Im wondering how much it possibly had to do with removing peanuts and potatoes more than what I was eating. But I wonder what she thinks about kale being super high in goitregens which prevents the absorption of iodine. Having thyroid disease I tend to be weary of raw kale because of the goitregens. I guess Im going to back to eating Arugula and lettuce salads and go back to avoiding spinach, and ignore my taste buds.

      Some of us are sensitive to both oxalates and goitrogens, and must eat them in very small quantities infrequently, to avoid overload. I take desiccated thyroid glandular in small quantities (1/4 of a capsule) and it helps with goitrogens. As for kidneys, the best foods are plants that handle water: melons, courgettes. Those are a problem for those sensitive to sodium/ potassium balance...who need to sprinkle them with salt, or eat salty foods before or after to compensate. In general, any single (genetic or acquired) imbalance will always lead to several other imbalances. In Chinese traditional medicine this problem is known as "knotty problem". In a tight bundle, if one tries to straighten out one knot, several others tighten.

      Both are a problem but oxalates & phytates are what I've looked into recently as they seem more concerning. It seems that macadamia nuts, coconuts, & hemp hearts (shelled hemp seeds) are low in both. These are it when it comes to nuts & seeds that are both low in oxalic acid & phytates.

    Does taking NASIDS cause more damage from oxalates. I've heard something like that. I guess NSAIDS mess up the kidneys and liver which then make it more difficult to get rid of oxalates? I have chronic pain possibly in part, from high oxalate consumption so it's difficult to not take pain killers while I'm healing from oxalate poisoning. Stuck in rock and hard place.

      Go carnivore so that you are getting all your bioavailable nutrients. Also lots of sardines, mackerel and cod liver for omega 3, and bone broth for collage, glucosmine and chondroitin (try those as supps for joint pain). Also exercise as much throughout the day as feels healthy.

      It is a close relative of coffee its in the same family but im not sure its hard to know whos telling correct info these days. I take it regularly and if it dose then the pain killing effects keep you from noticing much oxolate pain. I still feel it though when I eat swiss chard but dont seem to feel any pain even after just taking kratom and it wears off so good chance its ok.

      Good question. I'm wondering the same thing about Kava (a.k.a. Kava Kava tea). I would love to find a real answer about that. Kava is in the pepper family of plants, I believe. And users of it typically drink a lot of sediment, which comes from ground up root of the plant, in the resulting"brew" of traditionally prepared Kava. I think White Kratom is the most potent, so maybe it would help to take that form of it -- to change the ratio of "effect" to "amount of oxalates (within it)" more in your favor. I'm concerned that both Kava and Kratom will not be studied (researched) to the extent deserved, because they are considered "niche" things to do. They are associated with "recreation" and drug seeking thrills, in the popular imagination, more so than pain relief. Will any funded and formal research, therefore, be done to truly get to the bottom of this question? I sure hope so, but I'm not going to hold my breath about it. Raphides might exist in these 2 types of plants, or else the more soluble type of oxalates, which apparently can do just as much harm (over the long run) to our health.

    You have mentioned something about gut health issues My grandson is 3 months old and we have changed his formulas 3 times to just about any type of formula that's out there from Similac to soy and poor baby still vomits it up he was diagnosed with GERD or heartburn how can a baby have that at 3 months of age what is he consuming that wood cause that and do you have a better suggestion of what we can give him instead of a formula I am sure that the formulas aren't the best thing to give them either He's also constipated Dr seems to think that he is dehydrated and all kinds of things like that are happening to this poor baby what do you suggest? 🤔 I also heard that goat's milk could be helpful is that true?

    Has anyone experienced a lot of pushback when you try to educate people on this? I mention that spinach is probably the highest in oxalates and some people almost rip my head off. How dare I say spinach is unhealthy! Hopefully, one day, (Dr. Mercola’s interview w Sally will help tremendously) oxalate awareness will be as common as gluten or lectins, but for now, many people can’t get past the cognitive dissonance that these “super foods” actually causing damage. We have to begin exploring our beliefs. I ask them how they know that spinach is healthy. Is it because we’ve been told over and over that it is? Popeye? “Eat your spinach, eat your vegetables, then you can have dessert”? I, for one, have eaten spinach, but never loved it. I can give that up no problem. The dark chocolate, though..... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

      I drank "superfood" shakes (added spinach to most of them) almost daily for 6 months and got so sick. I was as malnourished as a vegan! People freaked out and refused to believe that the shakes were the problem.

Then I finally tried high fat low refined carbs and my life changed. Do I believe plant based in wrong? NO! I do believe the diet best for you is based on what YOUR genetic heritage is.       Try both for a few months and see! I personally got sick on vegan/vegetarian and nearly died twice. Recovering nicely on keto carnivore. I know which works for me by how I feel (and blood labs results, and recovering from illnesses)

    Please give me a website that will directly get me into a list of the oxalate content of all foods. My husband and I are in our 70's and are getting into this after slowly going from Keto which we began January 1 2020 and finally finished off the last vegetables and fruit we had May 13 2020 (today). We've gathered we shouldn't go cold turkey -- probably. Anyway, I'm tired of trying to go through all the websites I'm offered and never finding one that is just a list with all kinds of foods. No preaching. No trying to convince. We're the choir.

      Don't listen to MacDougall, he is a quack with dementia. Hormesis is overrated. Go carnivore and eliminate the poisons first, then reintroduce as tolerated. Drs. Paul Saladino. Paul Mason and Shawn Baker are good as well.
