      The white film you wipe off plums is a natural protectant the plant produces to keep deseases from infecting the fruit usually only mature and very healthy plum trees produce the film

    My plumb tree is dropping its fruit. Plenty of plumbs about 1 1/2 inches long and they are dropping from the tree. Why? What can I do?

    • @GoGreenYes
      @GoGreenYes  Před 2 lety

      There can be numerous reasons why a plum tree drops its fruit before it ripens: insects, disease, high winds, and too much water, too little water, lack of nutrients, poor drainage, weed competition, and excessive shade.

    • @GoGreenYes
      @GoGreenYes  Před měsícem

      You can grow plum trees in large pots or containers so long as they have good drainage. Be sure to choose a self-fertile plum if you only want 1 tree - something like a dwarf Santa Rosa is perfect in pots.

    Take it they can't stay in a pot/container ?

    • @GoGreenYes
      @GoGreenYes  Před 2 lety +1

      Plum trees can be grown in containers but the fruit will need to be thinned to avoid the branches getting too heavy.
      Plum trees need regular fertilizing once fruit production has started.
      happy gardening.

    Plums are typically dark blue or purple 🫐

    • @GoGreenYes
      @GoGreenYes  Před rokem

      Plum is a purple color with a brownish-gray tinge, like that shown on the right, or a reddish purple, which is a close representation of the average color of the plum fruit.

    Hi go green ! My plum trees in uk mostley have maggots and so are wasted every year. What is wrong please?

    • @GoGreenYes
      @GoGreenYes  Před 2 lety +1

      You can try this way:
      • Get rid of any infested fruit - including fallen fruit.
      • Eliminate places for the larvae by clearing away debris and loose bark from the base of the plum trees.
      • Lightly disturb the soil around the base of the tree, hopefully they will be eaten by birds.
      • Encourage insect-eating birds to the area using feeders and nest boxes. Bluebirds and swallows particularly like moths, while grosbeaks and orioles will go after the larvae.
      • Trap the adult moths before they mate using fly traps or special pheromone traps that will not impact beneficial insects.
      hope it helps,
      Go Green

    Is negative temperatures are required for American plums

    • @GoGreenYes
      @GoGreenYes  Před 3 lety

      Not really, best conditions are a well-drained soil, sunny site for fruit production; however American plum can tolerate shade.
      American hybrids are typically the hardiest of the plums, with some varieties being able to survive as far north as Zone 3.
