Van Life - Off Grid Style Food Storage with No Fridge & No Ice

  • I have adapted to a non refridgerated diet while living on the road. I eat well and enjoy my meals. I do go to grocery stores at least once a week to stock up on things. This system of food storage is similar to homestead living, or off grid living because I am not using any electricity to cool my food. I try to move with the weather or keep my coolers hidden and my van ventilated.

#vanlife Is new to this generation; a counter-culture whose mission is based around the idea of living more outdoors, being eco-friendly, and often times affortable. There are different off shots of this culture that are known as Escapees, Escapers, RubberTrampers, Digital Nomads, Snow birds, Rainbow kids, dirt bags, etc. People live in anything that moves, SUVs, cars, trucks, campers, trailers, bikes, tents, Class A's, school buses, step vans, Subaru's, and more. Some of us ask if others are "full-timers" or "part timers" This just means if you have a sticks and bricks(house) home base or if you have sold everything and are always on the road. I have been full time in my van for 2 1/2 years camping, boondocking, stealth camping, driveway surfing, parking lot hopping along the way. Every place is new and different and I have friends in many states now. The day to day life is interesting and filled with unknowns. I do get frustrated at it sometimes but I find that even after a few months of staying still I need to pick up and keep going. Seasonal and temporary jobs keep me going but also your support of my channel. I don't know if I would be still on the road in this capacity if it wasn't for your support and encouragement. I feel honored to have so many people rooting for me to keep at it! Through trials and tribulations, sunrises and sunsets this lifestyle change has been a growing experience.

Hey guys! I see lots of concern about food poisoning and making ice work in a cooler. I am just showing how my situation works. Refrigerators are great, ice is great but both are not what I want to work around. I hope this video gave you some ideas for your journey. Safe Travels!

I know my warnings won't likely matter. But,...
As a grandmother & food safety inspector, for many years, I couldn't sleep without saying...
      PLEASE honey...
get some thermometers! DON'T trust your INSTINCTS & smells to always be accurate!
And FYI, HONESTLY... condensation, inside the foods packaging, & sometimes actually inside of eggs themselves, can be deadly.
It may be your biggest danger
Its a petri dish, for waterborne bacteria
Russian Roulette, that so far, you've won.
      So far! 😔
Keeping Temps consistent & or changing packaging daily, is the only way to avoid it!
      I'm Sincerly not exaggerating!
      Honest...
      Cross my heart! ✋🙂👆
Now go get some thermometers, monitor & read storage temps guidelines on packaging
      They really aren't just suggestions!
Being annoyed by ice, would be a silly thing, to lose EVERYTHING over.
      👵🏻 Theres my granny's 2¢
      Be safe 💚

I lived on my boat for 10 YEARS with no refrigeration. Did as Carli does and used outsides temperatures to help with keeping things fresh and cool when possible. Most of those "Keep Refrigerated" labels are from corporate lawyers to cover big company asses if something goes wrong. Things like butter, eggs, mayo, katsup, mustard, peanut butter, jams, jellies and such were kept on a shelf behind and above my wood/oil stove. Milk was kept in the cockpit. Nothing ever went bad. I kept dirty utensils out of jars and only opened to scoop something out. In the worst part of summer I sometimes got some ice but not always. People lived for Thousands of years with no refrigeration which is recent, (Last 90 years or so.). Everyone is still fine, wife kids, after all these years.

Four years in Nellybelle, my 93 Dodge Grand Caravan LE (the L is for Luxury) with my #hobohound (Sammy) here in the high mountain meadows of Fort Collins. We're urban expeditioneers. Like you, we have no shower or refrigeration. Like you I use a pee bottle. Unlike you, I am an URBAN expeditioneer, so I have no need for refrigeration or toilets because there are tons of stores keeping my stuff cool until I need it. Plenty of 24 hour toilets but I rarely need to crap at night, so it's easy to manage morning coffee (Hobo Joe, aka effective laxative) in a lot with free wifi (I pay for no comm services) and a nice loo. I have the single burner Coleman butane stove (uses butane in what look like hairspray cans at three bucks a pop) I do use the Mr. Buddy heater in my MINIVAN, with my DOG and have the 20 pound propane can next to it in the middle of the dash. The heater is where the front passenger seat used to be. Refill propane every four or five days in the worst of it. . It's dangerous as shit and I wouldn't want anybody else to try it. I have CO detector and am extremely conscientious of the required free space around it. I'm on my FOURTH winter here in the van. The first one was without heat and I'd do that bundling up thing when I got off work at night. Screw that.. The last three years I've run my Mr. Buddy almost full time in the winter here in Colorado. I'm not bundling up like all the homeless dreck I see wandering the lots of my prime estates. Showers are easy enough. I have builr a decent 'hobo friends support network" based on my fabulosity and deftness with the lifestyle. There are homeless shower services available. There are also gym memberships/showers and the like for those who desire. You seem to be doing pretty good yourself but I'm not interested in running the roads like you younger kids. I'm the #hobomessiah of the high mountain meadows. Just as full of shit as all the other messiahs you have heard of but I have the advantage of not being totally incommunicado. Funny aside? I have a cooler like you show in your video but I ONLY bought it so I could go 'off grid' a week in the mountains camping. LOL. Good luck. Enjoy.

Opening your cooler at night around here means feeding the bears.
Maybe you should set up an evaporative cooler. The traditional version are two terracotta pots with sand between them to hold the water but you can make a high tech version similar to those Frio insulin coolers if you're good with sewing (the water absorbing crystals can be found in garden shops as they mix them into the soil to increase water absorption, they can also be found in diapers and indeed you could just wrap your food in ziplock bags tucked into damp diapers, preferably dampened with clean water).

Yes I know the Latest research indicates Mayonaise can remain on the table but that relates only to squeeze bottles where the odds of cross contamination are at their lowest. The 1st time you dip a knife or a spoon into that large jar of Mayonnaise, Whether clean or otherwise, You have cross contaminated it with bacteria and it will spoil rapidly. I kept bacon a few days and felt okay about it but I would do a smell check to see if it was still good. Cheese can be okay and maybe pizza. I think though you would want to get your cooler/fridge cold first before putting food in it. Sometimes I would open my cooler at night to let the cold air in after a hot day but by morning the cooler was still warm. Sometimes I would buy frozen items to act like small ice packs because my main annoyance was bags of ice were big and messy. I hope this helps!

DID you know, you can make mayo out of the eggs, and a little oil and keep mixing it with a fork till it turns into that thick paste? Besides, you can get mayo packets at any restaurant when you do go to one and add some to your storage. Add ketchup, mustard, salt, pepper, and ranch to it as well. People say this is stealing, but when you are a customer, you can take condiments for future use as drive thru people don't always give you what you actually need like silverware for the salad you buy. A dollar salad at McD's isn't so bad, and you can get ranch, mayo, ketchup, mustard, salt, pepper, sugar as well. Yes, even napkins, and silverware. Not saying HOARD it, just a couple packets and leave. I usually add my own chicken to the salad I get, so the condiments come in handy for that reason. Oh, and FYI--Fresh farm eggs can be stored in this manner--Five Ways to Store Eggs without Refrigeration
Grease each egg carefully and thoroughly with Vaseline.
Paint each egg with sodium silicate (water glass).
    Boil each egg 10 seconds.
    Deep-freeze the eggs.
Turn over the eggs every two or three days. Do not store them longer than 2 weeks on your counter in this manner. Once refrigerated, you must keep them refrigerated.

Good tips. Similar to my house pantry, except for the eggs. I thought about using a Leer Pot method to chill things but I wonder what you think. Have you tried a Leer Pot to keep things chilled or does your cooled Coleman provide the same environment? I may give the Leer Pot a try this Summer as I'll be sitting in one camp spot & won't have to worry about it breaking. For myself I prefer store eggs chilled & farm fresh eggs not chilled.

You and others who do this might want to consider keeping capsules of activated charcoal in your first aid kit. It's useful for food poisoning, in case that should happen. I buy the KAL brand, which you can find at any health-food store or online. You take 2 at the first sign of poisoning and continue to take 2 capsules every two hours until the symptoms subside. It usually only requires 2 or 3 doses.

@@treenotion9466 You're welcome. It's used all the time in ERs across the country. It's very well known for treating poisonings of all sorts, though it doesn't work for everything (like gasoline ingestion). I think everyone should keep some in their first aid kits and know its uses and limitations. 👍

There is NO REASON for ice to ruin your food. What you need to do is take a bag of ice (or two) and put them in a second plastic bag so they dont' leak and put them in your cooler. DO NOT take the ice out of the bag; put the entire bag(s) inside the cooler. That way it's not possible to get water into your food.

There are always those freeze packs instead of ice. You can also buy an ice making machine instead of a refrigerator. They make small counter top I've makers that make 2 lbs of ice in around 7 minutes. It doesn't use !ugh energy either.

    • @TheDawnofVanlife
      @TheDawnofVanlife Před 5 lety +1

@@evopwrmods how are you going to chill the freezer ice packs? Those are for short stretches, a trip, a lunch you eat that day, not long term. It's really just as efficient to skip ice and keep a cooler in cool places in your van and avoid highly perishable foods for long trips. Ice is annoying, it's frozen water. However you get the ice, eventually it melts.

    • @MaxZomboni
      @MaxZomboni Před 5 lety +1

gene snyder OK, I get the food floating when the ice melts. But if the food is in sealed packages, that shouldn't hurt it at all. Ideally you would drain the water out several times a day anyway. Food that might be damaged by water can be put on top of food that is in sealed containers. You could also put a wire rack inside the cooler to keep the food above the water level. When I was younger we used to buy two cheap styrofoam coolers. I don't even know if they even make those anymore. We would put one cooler inside the other. Then we would poke small holes inside the bottom of the top cooler to let the water drain into the bottom cooler. With enough ice it would last a couple of days in the top cooler, and all the water would go into the bottom cooler. There are solutions to keep your food from getting soggy. I also understand that you don't always want to make trips to buy more ice. But if you can keep your food cold for the first two days, it should last two days longer. Anyway that is just my idea, if it helps anybody.
