- The Nikon Z6 video autofocus, is it still worth it in 2022? In this video, we are going to be testing out the face tracking, touch tracking, and point tracking modes, all at different speeds to discern what the best settings are for autofocus recording. Also, we will be comparing the Nikkor z 24-70mm F2.8 S, to the Nikkor F 24-70mm F2.8 G and seeing how they stack up against each other. At the time of recording my Nikon z6 was upgraded to firmware 3.20.

Thanks for this video! Even after using Z6 for over one year, your video was very valuable!
Super helpful, thanks for making this!
Ahhh this is SO INFORMATIVE! Thank you!!! Loving the new set up 😉😉
Soon you'll be getting an in person tour 😌
Hey dude, i'm from Brazil and i'm loving to watch your videos!!! Congratulations for the great job that you did in your channel!
Great video, thanks Johann!
My new z6ii is working great with auto focusing, i use it for wedding videos primarily. And love the colors 😍
And I am not able to make a decent video with my z6ii 😢
Thanks for sharing!!!
Great video. Goes to show that even the good old Z6 has great AF for general use.
The F mount lenses were not designed with video in mind, and for stills AF the goal is to focus to the desired point as fast as possible. There would be no reason to design a still lens that can focus slowly and smoothly. Good to see that they've improved this feature in their Z lenses.
Love it my Nikon Z6❤️
nice video, I recently bought a Z6ll and I wanted to ask you if you would like to answer me, because you tested it longer than me what parameters for autofocus you use in terms of af speed, sensitivity and the 3rd option in terms of video.
Thanks this was really helpful. I believe there may have been a firmware update since this video so hopefully things will have improved even more.
Yup, the autofocus isnt perfect but the image quality is sublime. Personally, i love the colours and the skin tones rendered by the Z6. I love it, once i was shooting an engagement and my assistant had a D810 with a tamron 24-70 f2.8, that thing weighed more than a ton, i cant even imagine putting that on my decently sized gimbal and shooting for longer periods. I never appreciated the form factor and the weight of Z6 until I held the d810. Having so much in such a compact form factor is an amazing experience.
Thank you SO MUCH for this!! Struggled with autofocus on my Z6 and this is so informative! Also... dig the new set up 😉
I totally agree with what you've mentioned! Spot on. I'll add that I was also content with my Z6 for a while but recently I've been using Canon R5s at work and it's a game changer. I know the price and age difference is sizable but having that reference point really highlighted how poor the video performance of the Z6 is. The autofocus on the R5 is just so intelligent that I hardly ever worry that I won't get something in focus anymore. I've also found that shooting sports is also a MASSIVE weakness of the Z6. Other mirrorless options from canon and sony just simply outperform in that aspect as well. Anyways, great video!
Eye auto focus does work video on the Z6ii. Because of the timing of this video I thought this would be regarding the new firmware update on the Z6ii. (So far I am loving it) Still very informative, thank you.
Do you own a Z6II?
Thanks for this. The Z mount lenses are incredible, especially for video. I usually just abuse the autofocus by utilizing the 3D tracking feature, and constantly tapping the back of the screen to maintain focus on my subject. Nikon is not quite on par with video features from the competition, but all the bitching about their inferiority is overblown. Especially when so many consumers aren't even good enough to utilize all the features that they demand. Complaining about having to pay extra for RAW, is silly when you don't even have color grading skills. And don't even get me started on the gripes about the Z series not having 8K. For the price point, this camera is insanely efficient.
pro tip : watch series on Flixzone. Me and my gf have been using them for watching all kinds of movies during the lockdown.
@Lawson Andy yup, have been using Flixzone} for months myself =)
@Lawson Andy yup, I have been watching on flixzone} for since december myself =)

Love it
Not 2 years late! A used z6 is a great deal these days. I just picked one up, but only have manual lenses and have been debating if getting an autofocus lens is even worth it. This is a great input!
Are there any cheaper options besides the 70-200 z mount
Cool videos ! Question: if I wanna use my Z6 as "run 'n' gun" camera - what would be the best settings for focus ? In other words, I just wanna pick up my Z6 and shoot what ever is happening around me without constantly playing with focus. Thank you
Quick question. So AF, its slow and its not best at acquiring new focus points when you move the camera. Ive only held Z5 for a brief moment with S lens. So question is. When panning, cant you just press the screen to focus on the new point ? Using touch screen pen sholdnt shake the camera when on a tripod. Obvously its too much for handheld, but if it works like that, with connection with preset rack speed... seems to me like superior option to manual focus pulling with follow focus when 1 man shooting.
It's an awesome setup 😀. Thk u.
Can I except some colour grading video from u ? .thk u 😊
Just bought a Z6II and a Z7II and a z 24-70 F2.8 S but autofocus speed doesn't work either when I am recording or not. ALWAYS super fast! Can you help? Thanks. Steve
6:58 "2 years late" or maybe enough time for you to get to know the camera and its AF system very well. l find your video spot on. l've encountered the same problems and resorted to similar solutions. Overall, l find the z6 AF to be reliable and predictable 'once you know how it works and what to expect.' For the record, l film with a z24mm f1.8s. ATB!
z6 is great, i try it, and always in my bucket list ,, but what me make thinking twice is it cant use SD card,, cfast so expensive for me, if i wanna do more video..
They just release a new firm ware.
Old lenses have Old motors from 10 to 30 years ago
New Nikon lenses have 2 focus motors .......the same motors that they use on the Space Shuttle...........lol
Io made a video about it
interesting vieo but today we would expect to see Z6ii in action with 1.2 firmware and how you manage, in video mode AF-F, auto area eye detection, FN1=subject tracking,...
i would be also interested to learn how, in video mode, using manual focus with focus peaking, iso with ND filter,...
Then look here... its very good performance with new firmware :) czcams.com/video/lgBvK_FtUs0/video.html
Did you film in n-log?
No, I did not. The autofocus is *slightly* less responsive in N-log, but only in very low contrast scenes. Honestly, there really isn't much of a performance difference in my experience. :)
@@JohannBeute cool, so did you film in raw or one of the inbuilt picture profiles? The colours look good.
@@dandaddalyon12 I filmed in 8 bit internal. I did film in the flat profile so you could argue maybe the autofocus is ever so slightly worse (seeing it is lower contrast.) - But I think most will be filming in the flat profile.
@@JohannBeute thank you
I had to return my Z6 because of the auto focus. Compared to my 2 year old A6400 it performed so much worse. So sad because I loved the colours
Nikon's colour science is incredible! I really hope they manage to make a comeback and don't go under.
Haha, yea thank you.
Is really so bad the manual focus with the Z lens? I don´t understand how
The manual focus is bad with the z lenses because of their being focus by wire, which means the focus ring and the focusing mechanism aren't mechanically connected, they are electronically connected and depending upon the torque applied upon the focusing ring the internal focusing mechanism will react. This is also why we can customise the focus ring to control the exposure compensation, the aperture or the iso.
@@MysticApertureStudios thanks for the response!
@@angelurielbarreto580 you are welcome.
I think it is an interesting movie , i do not know for dure because the voice fry is too annoying for me .
Z6 AF eyes is stupid !
