Pretty much. When I was a kid I somehow actually befriended a racist. Would always have the Confederate flag somewhere on him and he openly told me that him and his family don't like black people. It's was an interesting experience for me. At the time I didn't know racism was still a thing. I didn't fully understand what it meant to be racist, so I treated him and judged him as I would anyone else. He ended up becoming my friend and didn't care to be seen with me or following me. He even stuck up for me before and told me that if anyone else tried to mess with me him and his people will take care of it. I still remember when he honestly opened up and said I was the 1st "black" person he could tolerate and accept. It's interesting looking back on it now but at the time I was just too innocent and happy. I was just glad he actually appreciates our friendship. Never asked for anything but offers to help plenty.
Although I supposed as kids it's easier to change their views before they get older and more set in stone. It's because of this is why I can't get the same hatred with the Confederate flag or a racist and believe me I've had my fair share of encounters.. Especially when you 1st started in customer service in person. I'm reminded of my friend. He wasn't evil or anything and he was a decent guy. My reactions instead are just empathetic. Close friend by the way. It would actually hurt me how he didn't trust his usual friend group with me. It was like he was more embarrassed about it rather than me being an embarrassment. If I was an embarrassment he could've kicked me to the curb whenever they arrive but instead he would take me away. As if he didn't want me to get hurt. Emotionally. Nowadays I can imagine the scenarios he was trying to avoid. I wasn't the court jester for his friend to laugh at and poke fun of but another friend as well.
