To make matters worse, they had been settled there after being forcefully removed without compensation from their original settlement, adult’s movement being controlled like their own children’s…imagine your own children fully aware that your father is helpless and can’t protect you against some men who can kick down your door and undress him in front of you!!! Nothing can ever justify crime, but such things makes people very angry and some people cannot control their anger, add to that the atmosphere of Soweto from day one was that of State sponsored political violence and the anger as a result all the atrocities of the brutal regime of the day, then you obviously have many angry people! That is why many people that did crime back then would only target the beneficiaries of the system at the time. Of course things continued into democracy, but then again ballot papers in 1994 didn’t come with cheques, we voted and the following day we still had to eat and when you only know one way of surviving, you will continue with life as you know it with the hope that at some point things will change. It’s how tradition and ways of doing things get passed down generations!!! I do not for once want to believe that Soweto was just a collection of criminals…crime was caused by the situation people were subjected to, however I will concede that amongst us, in spite of life of all our privileges, we will still do crime!!!
