So, something that I really appreciate about this game is the dynamic of these two characters. Ellie and Abby are almost EXACTLY the same in terms of their need for revenge. Both lost someone special to them. For Abby, it was the loss of her father, who was actually killed by Joel, and the reason Abby targeted Joel in the first place. Sure, she was pissed that Joel took the only living cure that could save the world, but Abby’s father was the last true connection to any kind of humanity that Abby had, and the reason she went on a path of revenge. And with Ellie, it was the death of Joel at Abby’s hands that set her on her path of vengeance. And just like Ellie killed Abby’s friends, Abby killed Ellie’s friends. Their fates are ultimately intertwined in a vicious cycle of hatred and violence. And when it came time for them to finally face each other, Abby’s hunger for vengeance is why she was able to win against Ellie the first time, but it was Ellie’s thirst for vengeance that helped her win the second time they met. That and Abby was so withered and broken that she could barely move. I’m honestly surprised she could even stand up, let alone put up a fight. And people wonder why Ellie decided not to kill Abby at the end of the game. I’ve always thought it was because she realized that it wouldn’t be what Joel would’ve wanted. But, now that I think about it, I don’t think that was the case. The answer to this dilemma was in this first fight. If Abby wanted to, she could’ve killed both Dina and Ellie at the end of this fight, and she would’ve done it had it not been for Lev. But Abby chose not to do it, because she already won. She got her vengeance just by beating Ellie to a bloody pulp. And so there was no point in killing Ellie, because in the end, that wouldn’t have brought her friends back, much less fix whatever was happening in her camp. Also, Abby was filled with so much trauma from losing her friend that she just had to fight and beat Ellie in order to overcome her trauma. So, ultimately, Abby gave Ellie another chance at life. How she chose to live it was up to her. Which is why when Ellie chose not to kill Abby, she was faced with the same conclusion. Killing Abby wasn’t necessary anymore. All Ellie had to do was face Abby and beat her in order to win against the trauma that was weighing her down and why she couldn’t return to a sense of normalcy. It’s why I actually want to see Abby and Ellie come back together in the third game.

You really gotta hand it to naughty dog on this fight man. The lighting, the crashing through the floor, the bricks and chains. Its a full on cage match in hell for revenge
Yeah she's obviously got trap mines so that's a biggie. Either that or get rid of the ladder Abby get access to the building by. Or put a trap mine the other side of the window. I mean, how dumb is Ellie: first doesn't remember she's left the map at the aquarium - with her exact location pinpointed on it - then it doesn't occur to her that Abby, or anyone else, might come after her. Not exactly plot holes but out of character for Ellie.
@@anderson_abigail3322 She definitely was. Her journal at the farm before she leave for Santa Barbara talks about her being relieved that hardly thought about Seattle for one day, and I'm sure the whole Seattle experience was a big part of her PTSD (though that could have been made a lot clearer). So yes being in shock could accoutn for that oversight. I guess what I meant as well is that it seems to me out of character for someone who's normally so smart not to have blocked off the ladder or put a trap mine at the window soon after she and Dina found the theatre.
@@smoker5989 I mean that is the problem here though. Ellie wanted Abby to suffer, so she wasn't going to do anything that'd kill her fast. She goes for blunt force trauma first. When that fails, she goes for a small pistol walking around in the open. When that fails, she resorts to stealth planting trip mines. She progressively realized she couldn't choose how to kill Abby to inflict the most amount of suffering. It was just a matter of survival.
So this is something I never really thought about but since ellie bit abby during the fight sequence shouldn't she become an infected or because she's immune she can't technically turn other people like I know she didn't get dina infected but I feel like that would have been a cool way for abby to die
Seriously... especially since she wanted to hunt down Abby later on, it would've been somewhat interesting if she found Abby had gotten infected with the bite
@@DinoMeat-qw4lg they could've at least made some sort of twist where Abby was also immune but her dad, like Joel, was too selfish to let his girl die. Have Abby find out through a recording her father made or something. Even then, it probably wouldn't matter since people hated the game before it even came out.
I understand why people are saying Ellie doesn't act like this during combat, cause she doesn't, but maybe it's because of her adrenaline and how much she wanted to kill Abby for what she did to Joel.
I just played this part today. Compared to the David fight in Part 1 (I play Remastered) this was actually easier. Being able to stun Ellie with bottles and stuff was a less daunting task than running over broken plays silently. But that fight was one of the most brutal things I have seen in a while. I felt every punch and I normally don’t.
i think this game def wouldve worked better if abby embedded herself into jackson, got to know joel. it would give her revenge even more weight. not only would she have gained their trust in a realistic way, there couldve been more internal conflict with her going forward with revenge, which ties into ellies internal conflict of forgiveness vs revent. abbys friends def think joel deserves it bc of the cost he inflicted on the world. wouldve created interesting tension too of waiting for the other shoe to drop, forcing their hand as ellie and her friends suss out their intentions. i dont mind the introduction of her character. joel has definitely hurt good people being complex himself, and i dont think its out of the question for people related to his victims to come after him in this dark and bleak world. prob wouldve made the game longer but i think i wouldve connected with abby more if she had more conflict about vengeance. its not an easy thing, esp killing someone in front of their loved ones, even if you hate them/build up hate for them
there were several moments in this fight where ellie could have killed abby in moments like the stab in the leg where abby was clearly down and ellie got up first and of course she could very well dodge a shot but not a molotov or an automatic bomb, that it's fact, besides that strength isn't always everything and ellie is probably smart at the same level as abby, the main proof is her fights against brute seraphites and how each one manages to destroy them in 1v1
What I think is so cool I saw where someone said in this scene Ellie is mimicking the way you played her so if u crafted a lot of bombs and booby traps or if you were fast and brutal it would be like plying against yourself
So I didn't play the game, but I heard of the whole controversy and enjoyed the NakeyJakey vid about it. But then I see this and think, "Damn, I love everything about this." Seems like an excellent sequence, narratively and mechanically.
This is it, this is where I end the game because I cannot for the life of me get past the very first phase, she spots me immediately, runs over and shoots me. Is my Ps4 adding bells to my shoes or something? Why is this so damn infuriating?
I thought it was simple enough. I'm sure you've beaten it by now, but if you don't know, then you should know, it's all about avoiding those stupid chains hanging down, finding a way to position yourself behind ellie, throwing a glass bottle at the back of her head and then running up on her. bottle to the dome = win.
INGL, having to fight Ellie was tough for me (yes, I know it’s a game). I get so into games, and love characters, I still get pissed every time I play through…having to play as Abby. Ellie is such a boss…it would have been epic for an all-Ellie game. Maybe next time? Also siiick gameplay man :)
@@elishawilson5342 and her father wanted to kill Ellie and now ? Joel just killed her father because he stood between him and Ellie. Story aside, I would have loved a proper rematch with Abby as Ellie. Ellie only won in Santa Barbara because Abby was almost starved to death and tortured, and even then it wasn’t by a lot. Imagine going up against Abby at her full strength. I feel like it would be a cool thing to mod into the game if The Last of Us 2 was on PC, but unfortunately it’s not. ):
The amount of people doing mental gymnastics to defend the flaws in the writing is beyond ridiculous and pathetic. You're in an abandoned building, you know how many are with you and where they are, Tommy would hear those footsteps coming down those stairs at the beginning. This whole scene's setup was not well thought out. The game gives you no consequences for failing at stealth and that breaks immersion.
abby is military trained. and hunting in the wild with loud leaves personally, you learn to walk with your heel first. she probably did the same thing too. walk with her heels to avoid making noise.
@@averageboi5195 Of course you could make that argument easily, but the game doesn't address it and audible footsteps that echo through the empty building are produced as you direct her towards and then down the stairs just before the scene starts. I'm not saying she couldn't have done so as someone with training, I'm saying this isn't conveyed in the game. It makes Tommy look grossly incompetent for how much experience he has, a big contradiction. The player should be penalised for not sneaking the entire time they're in unknown territory rather than just conveniently putting Abby into stealth mode when the scene triggers and having Tommy ignore or just happen to not hear her walking around upstairs before that. It would be more immersive and believable. That's all I meant.
I get what you’re saying, but it’s not hard to sneak up on someone (I’ve done it). You’d be surprised that most people aren’t aware of their surroundings. Things can make noise when you’re moving on it, but the ambient noise can overlap it. Plus Tommy was distracted with diamonds.
@@DialloMoore503 That's a horrendous excuse for horrendous writing. Tommy has been at this for DECADES. He's killed far worse than Abby to survive. He would NOT let his guard down at such a critical juncture, he KNEW that she had survived him picking her friends off with a rifle. At best it's lazy writing to get us to the Boss fight against Ellie when that could have happened a million other, far more organic ways.
@@XJ0461C You make an excellent point, and the writing is very flawed with this narrative ; I agree. However, it wouldn’t have been impossible for someone like Abby to sneak up on Tommy undetected. There were only two ways to gain access to the building (that I recall); The main entrance and the fire escape. Now it would’ve been smart to secure the second floor window, but maybe it never crossed their minds with everything that was going on. Abby knew that she couldn’t take a direct aggressive approach to her target by beating on the front door. She had to make her presence unknown. That part of the theater had carpet floors-easy to not make noise on. Now let’s say that the window was locked. Abby probably would’ve waited outside until one of them came out. Either way she would’ve found a way to get inside-she had determination. But I get what you’re saying. I personally don’t keep my back turned to any entry/exit point. I’d actually like to know how you would’ve wrote it differently. How does that scenario unfold in your mind?
@@shinrapresident7010 lol theres plenty of women in the ufc today that would easily take down most men. Especially a women in her prime age against an older man. And one whos also physically stronger and knows how to fight and kill people with their hands.
I wasted more than an hour in the last part where Ellie starts to place the sticky bomb on the ground. I thought Abby has to repeatedly blast the bomb until Ellie is down. I blasted her 3 times but Ellie never down. It turned out Abby has to quickly charge at her after Ellie got blasted.
You don't have to like it, but let video game creators tell the story they want to tell. You can dislike a story without trashing someone's right to tell it.

The rat king supposedly a hard fight I did that on my first try without an issue, but this one was... Incredible. What made it even harder was that I was actually rooting for both of them.
A lot of talk about jessie, and im on the sad side. Like think of henry in the first game, i kinda chalk him up to a jessie equivalent. What did henry get? Easily one of the most top 5 heartbreaking scenes in all of the series. What did jessie get? Fucking forgotten.
i thought henry was cliche tbh. like its in every zombie story ever. it was very well executed though (the little brother randomly asking about whether infected people still have their inner conciousness/soul and if heaven even exists, moments before its revealed he is infected) jesse was much more unique but we really only get to know his character if we pay attention to side dialogue, which unfortunately, many people dont do
The point of this game is the futility of vengeance. Although in my mind this scene is truly where Abby transforms from villain to hero by sparing Ellie and Dina and letting go of her murderous rage, thanks in no part to Lev.
They should have let you choose your character and i mean it, also, for me ellie's fight is too short, she should use her stun bombs, molotovs, maybe even a melee fight like the one at the end of the game, but using the enviroment.

That was awesome game no matter what the critics said and I hope we will see Abby and Ellie once more.
If I were Ellie I’d have set a nail bomb outside of the door Abby walks through in the beginning before she got hit by a plank of wood
@@ivanhoe8591 maybe ellie was shocked after killing an unknown pregnant woman.
Shhh how dare you to critize Neil's plot you're just a bigot who don't understand the story (sarcasm)
Seriously... especially since she wanted to hunt down Abby later on, it would've been somewhat interesting if she found Abby had gotten infected with the bite
thats so true!!
@@N3WTROLLkid i feel like the game missed out on an opportunity there..
That'd be a very mindless ending...either way Ellie can't get other people infected or immune with her bite.
I didn't expect that the theater became a battlefield. I thought there was just a safe room.

I felt every punch and I normally don’t.

i think this game def wouldve worked better if abby embedded herself into jackson, got to know joel. it would give her revenge even more weight. not only would she have gained their trust in a realistic way, there couldve been more internal conflict with her going forward with revenge, which ties into ellies internal conflict of forgiveness vs revent. abbys friends def think joel deserves it bc of the cost he inflicted on the world. wouldve created interesting tension too of waiting for the other shoe to drop, forcing their hand as ellie and her friends suss out their intentions. i dont mind the introduction of her character. joel has definitely hurt good people being complex himself, and i dont think its out of the question for people related to his victims to come after him in this dark and bleak world. prob wouldve made the game longer but i think i wouldve connected with abby more if she had more conflict about vengeance. its not an easy thing, esp killing someone in front of their loved ones, even if you hate them/build up hate for them
The thumbnail be like:
"Grounded, no damage"
...
"Except for Jesse"
there were several moments in this fight where ellie could have killed abby in moments like the stab in the leg where abby was clearly down and ellie got up first and of course she could very well dodge a shot but not a molotov or an automatic bomb, that it's fact, besides that strength isn't always everything and ellie is probably smart at the same level as abby, the main proof is her fights against brute seraphites and how each one manages to destroy them in 1v1
Are the QTEs still there? How am I supposed to know what to press without them lol
It’s recommended you play the game first on a lower difficulty before attempting the Grounded difficulty.
It’s square every single time and yes it shows it
Nicely done
4:26 every other time a main character gets pinned and pulls out a knife, they strike the neck.
What I think is so cool I saw where someone said in this scene Ellie is mimicking the way you played her so if u crafted a lot of bombs and booby traps or if you were fast and brutal it would be like plying against yourself
Never imagined that we've gone through the Ellie's journey just see her as opponent at the end.
I'm glad that they had the second round.
Hard to see Ellie get rocked like that, that's the homie 😩 lol
That punch at 4:31 i felt that 😮
I need to finish this game it’s been so long since I played it
So I didn't play the game, but I heard of the whole controversy and enjoyed the NakeyJakey vid about it. But then I see this and think, "Damn, I love everything about this."
Seems like an excellent sequence, narratively and mechanically.

@@XJ0461C
You make an excellent point, and the writing is very flawed with this narrative ; I agree.
Doing this on grounded with permadeath actually made me rage.
