  • Well, more like an "unbagging" the shells! It was my absolute pleasure to travel to Yeppoon on the Capricorn Coast for the first time ever. The scenery was lovely, especially around the coastal highway, but seeing the Keppel Bay Shell Club's Annual Shell Show, and seeing Shell World in Yeppoon, is what brought the biggest smile to my face.
I really enjoy this Russian shell collector: / @mikhail-tikhonov

I had an absolutely fantastic weekend away; it was jam-packed with a lot of driving (Yeppoon is 14 hour round trip), but I got to spend the time with amazing people and see a huge range of rare and incredible seashells. These are memories that I will hold dear for many years to come.
This was my first time camping (in a caravan park, but still...) so I am forever thankful to Mr Sheller and his wife for letting me share a site with them. They are absolutely lovely people to spend time with, and helped me a lot with understanding this type of accommodation. Thank you!!
Thank you so much for watching something different today, and of course, let me know if you have a favourite too? Honestly, I'd be surprised if you could pick just one!!

...Yes, I spelled "Keppel" incorrectly in the opening title...it was too late to change it. Just add it onto all of the word I mispronounced in this episode as well XD

G'day Toni 👋🏻💖 It was a fabulous weekend up the coast, and it was nice to camp (well, at the caravan park) with some friends 😁 these are memories that I will hold dear for a long time! It was my pleasure to share a few of the displays at the show, and record what I got from there (it will be nice for me to look back on this in the future too). I hope you're doing well today ❤️ and thank you so, so much for watching the big unboxing today 🥰

G'day Jan 👋🏼❤ I really decided to spoil myself on this trip! I'm just glad that I bought that melanistic Eglantine Cowrie before it was gone (I was eyeing is off greedily while doing my other shopping and seeing the shell displays) I'm so glad that it was still there because not getting it would have been a true regret of mine. I digress. There was a lot of interesting and varied shells to see, even with the same species of some of them! Those Zebra Volutes are a prime example! I need to stop or I will start rambling again. Thank you so, so much for watching, and for waiting for my slow reply this week after the big weekend ❤

Holy guacamole! 🥑🥑🥑 What a wonderful trip! I never realized there were so many different species of murex shells. 😮 That apple murex was huge. I’ve never seen one that big. It was wonderful to see Ninja! 🐈🐈🐈 I can’t believe she didn’t want to help you. 😂😂😂 I think I was most intrigued with the land snails. I never realized they could be so colorful. 🐌🐌🐌 Great video and so happy Mr. Sheller looks after you. Love pats to Ninja! 🥰🥰🥰

G'day Pam 👋🏻💖 I think this Yeppoon weekend is forever my favourite two days of this entire year 🤩 Ohhh yes, there are heaps of different murex species, that's for sure!! The Apple Murex...I looked it up and the Internet says they can get almost twice as big as the one I got from the shell show!!? I don't know if I believe it! I'm glad that you liked the seriously cool land snails as well. I think you can get some Apple Snails over in the USA that look pretty amazing, but be careful of dangerous wildlife if you do go looking! SWF Beach Life actually made a recently episode about hunting for their shells 😲 I was quite impressed! Oh my gosh Pam, Mr Sheller and his wife were absolutely wonderful all weekend; I wouldn't have had such a good time without them. I really owe 'em one! Thank you so much for watching the big unboxing 🥰 and yesss, Ninja gets all the pats (when she wants them). It was a cold rainy day when I unboxed the shells, so I couldn't really get to do anything other than huddle up on the chair. I should bring on of her pet beds downstairs, but I know she'll never use it 😅😺 cats!!!

Good afternoon Maddie, you can never have to many shells 😂. I'm a big fan of the land snail shells. it never ceases to amaze me what nature creates. You have beautiful shells Maddie. Sure do appreciate you sharing them all with us. Did you get a chance to shell at the beach near where you bought all your shells? I haven't written you in awhile, so wanted to say hi and again Thank you for all the work and effort you put out in order to share with all of us. Have a great week Maddie, see you next time 😁

G'day Roberta 👋🏻🏖️ Hahaha, I think that I can have too many shells...but I haven't reached that point yet!! I'm glad that you also liked the land snail shells; they're really impressive with their shapes, colours and patterns sometimes! They aren't often as interesting or as varied as sea shells, but they really do have their own kind of beauty. As for your question; it's a YES! I did get to look at two beaches at Yeppoon, though I didn't spend a lot of time at each, maybe 2 or 2.5 hours per beach (most of my shelling videos are 3-4 hours per beach visit, not including time to set up a shell display or travel to/from) but I still found plenty of beauties at the places I decided to stop at, so those will be the next two videos coming up... actually, each beach had very different shells from each other, so it's a nice pair of videos, I think. Oh goodness Roberta, thank you do much for your lovely words, though I think I make these videos as much for me as anyone else! I can somehow imagine myself watching them when I am old and grey and reliving the good ol' days!! Thanks for watching the very very very long video today 🥰

I actually wish that I'd spent more time at the beaches around Yeppoon, but I suppose the late afternoon tides wouldn't have been as good as midday or morning ones. No Eloise shells at the show (one might pop up at a National Show though) and gosh Trudy, I say this all the time but you should keep the shells that bring you the most happiness. Oh yes, I ended up buying too many shells, or maybe just the right amount 😂 I was really pleased with the melanistic ones. Ohh yes, the Zamboi murex was lovely 😍 the Israel (Thrush Cowrie) was really awesome, and the Tanzania cowrie uhhh I don't know the English name of it either 🤣 I'm not sure which Volute was your favorite, I think 4 of them were Queensland Volutes 😲 but yess, too many lovely shells to choose from. G'day Natalia 👋🏻🏖️ I had an absolute blast at the shell show, that's for sure!! As for your question, I don't actually watch too many other shellers; mostly because I spend so much time watching and reviewing my own shell finds that I usually want to spend my spare time watching my other interests. But that wasn't your question was it :P I watch Mikhail over here: www.youtube.com/@mikhail-tikhonov (he isn't a sheller, but a shell collector who makes short informational videos about shells species), I watch Sharmon on SWF Beach Life, but maybe only one video every now and then, and finally, I watch Roxann on Florida Beach Walks www.youtube.com/@FloridaBeachWalks a lovely lady! I used to love watching The Shell Nuts... I don't know what happened, but they don't post anymore, they removed comments, and removed some videos too... there must be a story there, but I won't pry. I also, of course, used to watch Shellcade Shelling Down Under. I am grateful that his videos introduced me to shelling, but I stopped watching him a while before he stopped posting and started to post repeats. He's a bit of a character, is all I'll say! I hope that answered your question ;) Thanks for watching this big unboxing today!!

Love seeing the shell show and your shell haul. You shop like I do. Ha! My favorite has to be the Ventral Cowrie. Because I’m a cowrie girl. But so many other favorites that it’s hard to pick the runner ups. I like all the Murex. And those Homalocantha Zamboni or was it Scorpio? Love them! G'day Conscz 👋🏻💖 I'm so glad that you enjoyed seeing this massive videos with the shell show and the, uhhhhm, unbagging! The Ventral Cowrie is so eye-catching, my goodness, I think you picked one of the best shells as the favourite! Ohhhh you are actually quite good with your murexes, aren't you? This is indeed the Zambo's Murex, but there is a very closely related species called Homalocantha scorpio; those ones have dark brown/black colour on their spines, and have a very similar appearance otherwise. I did see some Scorpio Murexes to buy, but I didn't see one that I loved, so I passed it up this time. I passed up a lot of species that I don't have... I will maybe get one next time I go to a shell show?? Heaps of lovely shells there, I do think that I went a little overboard on spoiling myself though 😂 Thank you so much for watching; Your message has been one of the ones that's taken me the longest to get to after returning from Yeppoon, making many long videos with new shells to research, and just trying to catch my break after a weekend away! Great episode, Maddie😊👍! Congratulations on adding to your collection😊🤗! For now I’ll tell you about cowries and then about some, since there are many of them😁. Excellent and rare specimens are melanist from New Caledonia👍🔥, African cypraeovulas, misty cowrie-callistocypraea nivoza (was on the list of the 50 rarest shells in the world from the book “Rare Shells” by S. Peter Dance) and of course I am very glad that you have added cypraea reevei to the collection😉👍, it is really considered rare, I remember once at an online auction as a gem it was sold for almost 1500 $ or euro, so you didn’t buy it in vain👍. Lyncina sulcidentata is so good 🤗and of course the kauri deer cowry is always very pleasing🤗, they are the largest cowry in the world, they can grow up to 19cm in length, by the way, I also bought my deer cheap😊
And I can talk all day about what you bought Maddie, there’s so much and all the shells are so interesting😊🤗🤗🤗
And the Shellshow is good, the very presence of shells of such a level as 3:17
Barycypraea fultoni, Callistocypraea broderipii, Callistocypraea leucodon, rare Zoila's, C. valentia, several luria tesselata, such rare volutes as volutoconus bednalli indicates that the organizers of the shellshow tried👍

G'day Mikhail 👋🏻💖 I am finally replying to you; you wrote me such a lovely comment, and I wanted to make sure I had the time to reply properly. I feel like I've been both lazy and busy since returning from the weekend trip away; it's hard to find my balance again after time away from home. Onto the cowrie shells:
Thank you SO, SO MUCH for sharing your cowrie knowledge with me!!! I had several shells that I knew to look for this time because of your videos! The melanistic Mauritia eglantina was a big surprise; it was the only one I saw for sale. A reputable shell collector told me that most of the melanistic shells in New Caledonia have been over harvested in recent years; there aren't many new ones to find these days.
Yesss the cypraeovulas I knew because of you! I love them so much. Callistocypraea nivoza is one that I had been looking for for a while, but much more expensive on eBay to buy. Cypraea reevei was a nice one, but I can't believe one sold for so much money??!! Actually, my friend (Mr Sheller) showed me his Reevei: it's a super glossy gem; I am a little jealous 😂! I'm still not sure if my Lyncina sulcidentata is a nice one, but I really like it how it is.
Oh Mikhail!!! I need to catch up on your videos, but the new shell that you were talking about, was it the Barycypraea fultoni?? The one with the cross on the back?? I didn't mention it in the video this time, but they are super rare and expensive 😮 did you actually get one? Either way, I think your collection will always been a step above mine 😁 your shells are amazing!
I wish I could have shown you more pictures from the shell show and shell world museum, but they are on Facebook. One day, you will be able to see them. Anyway! Thank you again for sharing so much of your time and knowledge with me ❤ and thank you for watching this very long, very big video 🥰🥰🥰 and for waiting so long for my reply!!

@@SandCoffeeRocks G'day Maddie 😊👋 Oh Maddie😊, I can finally answer calmly, I was on vacation and filmed videos in fits and starts when I was at home😂. And so I was in Crimea, in the Krasnodar region of Russia on different coasts of the Black Sea, but I didn’t collect shells and didn’t shoot videos, I just swam, sunbathed and relaxed😁
About the shell with the Maltese cross - Barycypraea fultoni - yes, I really bought it🙂This is a specimen of Barycypraea fultoni fultoni (miniatra), it is of poor quality, as can be seen from the stomach of the fish, and therefore I bought this specimen inexpensively in relation to the prices of fultoni. They offered me some nice Barycypraea fultoni massieri, but I refused, now I can’t afford to shell out a thousand or two thousand $/€ 💰💰💰for a shell😂. There, at the Shellshow in your video, there were also beautiful Barycypraea fultoni massieri.
And your very successful purchase is the melanistic eglantine🤩👏; in general, any melanistic cowries are iconic shells 💎in a collector’s shellcollection. So once again I congratulate you Maddie👏👏👏👍!

I have an off-brand phone as my everyday phone (the camera and focus on it is soooooo ridiculously bad), but it was starting to play up. I bought a second hand iPhone 12 Pro Max to use as both a filming phone and everyday phone, but like you, I had the same issues with it. It has a further away focusing distance than my much older iPhone (how even???) and when you're close up to something, it jumps between lenses... absolutely stupid. The microphone always used the rear one instead of the forward facing one too (a setting that can't be changed), so it can't even pick up my voice while filming. It's absolute rubbish for what I want to do. So, with no problems with my iPhone 8, it remains as my filming device. My 12 pro max is a fine every day phone, I suppose; it takes nice pictures and videos when not focusing on things close to the camera, and it does apps and internet stuff really quick. It also has nice camera stabilization and generally good focusing too, but again, not for the really close stuff.
If and when I need a new filming phone/camera, I will probably go with a Samsung A somethingorrather.... my dad got one of those a few months ago, and, even with three lenses, it doesn't jump around. It seems to have a fairly close focus distance (which I need for the little shells) and it records with the front facing microphone. I might borrow his at some stage to test it out before buying one, because I might find a fault with it while shelling? But, again, my iPhone 8 is what I've been using for the last year or so, and it's still working great. Heck, even the iPhone 6 that I started with was almost as good as the 8... it just got caught in the rain...le sad, it's not water resistant at all.
I've chatted your ear off for too long. Thank you so, so much for watching such a big unboxing today!!

@@SandCoffeeRocks Thx so much for the detailed reply! I used an iPhone 7 Plus for a lot of my footage and we do have an iPhone 8 Plus in the house so yeah still playing around with what to do. I can't stand the jump focusing these latest phones do--over a thousand dollars and it does that is SO irritating. Anyways, yesterday I used my husbands DJI Oslo Mobile 6 "gimble" and used the DJI recording app over my phone camera program and it was actually SO MUCH better in focusing!! I still need to do more playing with it and get comfortable using it--so that might be my "hack" with these latest iPhones. If the DJI program recording app does better than apple default then it's a program issue not hardware you know; but if the focus still gets on my nerves I'll just start using the 8plus we have; the one camera does SUCH A GOOD JOB. Mercy! We have a goPro also that I almost never use - those are only for wide shots and DO NOT focus up close. I see a few shelling videos using that for close ups and it's all blurry 😭 anyways, my rant over LOL back to shells....I have collected some Caribbean vase shells (Vacuum muricatum) over here on the east coast - I LOVE cleaning them, such a transformation. They are I'd say a rare shell to find. Ok know I've gone on too long lol, take care and I can't wait to see your next shelling adventure!

I'm glad that my little details can help! It's also quite interesting for me to hear about your gimble; I had considered getting one of those for my own shelling adventures! I do like the idea of have a steady video, but I worry about dropping it (or the phone from it) in the challenging rock pools, or needing a waterproof one (100% need a waterproof one), as well as keeping it charged, the cost of them, etc. My hand isn't super steady, but I think it's good enough for now. Interesting to hear about the DJI recording app too. I do want a new camera app that lets me choose which microphone (front or back) that my camera records from; do you know if the DJI recording app lets you do that? I should research that, but yes, that might be the perfect hack... though it might not be able to help with the far away focus distance one those Pro Max iPhone (I don't know if the base models have this same far away focus that the triple camera iPhones do?). Yes, GoPro is really no good; I researched into getting one very early into my shelling video career - once I learned that the minimum focus distance was 50cm (20 inches) I was like NOPE!! Thanks for letting me ramble back to you ;D and whoa, a vase shell!! That's a super sweet find, congratulations! Can't wait to see the video. Take care on your next adventure too~

@@SandCoffeeRocks hey! Not sure if you can select microphones in the app 🧐 I have to play around with it more myself. I thought I wouldn’t be comfortable with it at first, but it’s really easy to get used to 👍🏼 I highly recommend it! The clip I put on my phone to mount it is pretty strong it’s not going anywhere but then that mounts to a very strong magnet on the gimbal. My daughter has a 15 pro that only has two cameras on the back and it doesn’t struggle half as much for focus. Ohhhh all these technical things!! I will not have a video out this weekend-WAY to much going on this past week. I’m the Vacation Bible School director at my church and that was all last week. Late nights and tons to do I had no time even for my day job taking care of that all week. So tired…I have so many videos to watch to catch up on and destress from this past week! Take care and I can’t wait to catch up on the past couple videos you put out 😍❤️🌊

@@FloridaBeachWalks I saw your post about the Vacation Bible School directorship; looks like fun, but I'm sure there is a lot of stress and management that goes with it. Take the time to rest when you can 🙏🏻 and thank you for the technical info too!

do the dates mean when they were collected?

    • @SandCoffeeRocks
      @SandCoffeeRocks  Před 14 dny +1

G'day Leslie 👋🏻🏖️ So for the dates; the ones that I mentioned /specifically/ as being "55 years old, etc" where the collection dates of those individual shells. For the other dates on the papers that had a surname followed by a year, this signifies the person who first discovered/described/published the species in academic journals, and which year that was. For instance, the Tweed Murex said "Macpherson, 1962" - so this species was first described and shared for academic review by a man/woman surnamed Macphearson in 1962. This specific shell in my hands was not collected in this year (it didnt have the collection date in it), this is just the when the general species itself first entered the world stage, so to speak. Some of the other shells have dates from the 1700s and 1800s (such as Gmelin, 1791 on that California murex shell)... The British and Europeans really lead the way with recording the natural world; oh to be a pioneer in those days, they faithfully collected and recording so much that is in the history books today. Anyway, I hope that clears up the meaning of those papers?? I should have mentioned it during the video. If it doesn't, let me know...i might not have explained it very well. Thank you so much for watching the big video today 🥰
