  • Thanks for watching this video on EQ settings and how to think a little bit "outside the box" as a lot of people still believe that an amp should sound good with all the EQ controls at noon! This video focuses on the PRS Archon 50 amplifier.

    How do you dial in your amps? What amp comes to mind when you think of more "extreme" EQ positions? Also, sorry for the mic quality, I had some issues with my mic and had to use the mic on the camera. Not ideal.. Cheers!

      My ears get fatigued pretty fast. It's only when I came back after a while I can hear if it sounds good or terrible when working on my tones. Also making them sound good in the mix is whole another beast.

      I scoop them. Live i play it save with decent amount of mids. Also for monitoring myself a bit,always like a bit soundbleed from the amp. Volume as loud as i can get away with. I like them loud.

      Of course I dial amps as they need - there are a lot of amps that really benefit from extreme settings but my designers perspective is usually to create everything in a way that it sounds great with all knobs at noon and that adjustments are mainly for fine-tuning or for extreme preferences. Usually when I go about a tone stack circuit for example I add so much extra circuitry around it that puts the sweetspot at or close to noon that the supporting parts are usually more than the actual main circuit.
      This approach comes from me usually enjoying gear most that sounds great with "neutral" settings as a user.

  • @icenic_wolf
    @icenic_wolf Před rokem +35

    I really like the Tim Pierce method (if you don't know an amp well) of playing a riff via looper, and then one at a time, turn each of the knobs on your amp until you find the cusp of where the sound changes the most, and leave it right at that point. Once you've done one pass, go back through each of them and make very slight adjustments until the sound goes from good to great. Hopefully I have that attribution right, I first heard it several years ago and can't remember. (=

    Holy crap, that A/BB comparison was like lifting a wool blanket off the speakers!
    Just goes to show you need to listen to your ear and not focus too much on knob position.
    Sometimes if I'm having trouble with this I'll close my eyes and adjust the knob until it sounds right and then open my eyes to be surprised by how far right or left the sweet spot is.

    • @SonicDriveStudio
      @SonicDriveStudio  Před rokem +5

  • @XciteMike
    @XciteMike Před rokem

    I swear it's like you're reading my mind with content, albeit I'm clearly biased. The Archon 50 plays so many styles well, but the sweet spot is exactly where you have it. The only thing I do different depends on how buttoned down or opened up I want to sound, which I find is dictated pretty much entirely by that highly impactful presence knob. Sometimes luscious harmonic slop is just too fun to resist. Keep it up!

  • @petrucci973

    Very well done and excellent arguments made regarding what people expect from amps with the default EQ at noon. Your demonstration here really brought out something from this demo that's not seen frequently enough with the PRS Archon amplifiers. The demonstration with your EQ settings is tight, punchy and with just the appropriate amount of midrange for the mix.
    Also, your original video on how to dial the Fireball 100 (alongside the Mark V) without immediately using its mid-boost and/or cranking the presence even further, is an immensely underrated work and contribution to a proper understanding of what can be done with that particular amp. Unfortunately, and understandably, many rarely consider dialling back the presence and then properly pushing the highly responsive middle and treble dials, which unveils a very different and worthwhile midrange high gain tone from the amp; makes for a versatile high gain beast.

Could be with more pressence or less. Just try. I noticed when you put a tube amp aggainst lets say a boss katana or such with mids a bit pushed. You will hear the katana more. But that because it has a very high mid sound. Evh's also on channel 2. Mid explosion those amps on channel 2. Mid around half is more then enough on those white versions.

    I have the previous iteration of the Archon 50, and I used to think the lead channel sounded too muffled, being in the mindset that amps should sound right with everything more or less at noon. As silly as it may sound, I used to work around it with a 10-band EQ on the line out of my load-box. But your previous video on this subject made me lose my hang-up of not wanting to use extreme settings on the EQ knobs of the amp, and now I'm happy with the lead channel - just as this video showcases. I have to say I think the clean channel on the Archon 50 is my favorite of all the amps in my collection, as well as the AxeFX models, at least for the type of music I like to play clean (a lot of Jazz and ambient stuff).

    I had the same experience recently the first time I tried an Archon through a Marshall 4x12. I started with everything at noon and immediately had to bring in some top end. The bright switch was a great help too. Loved the sound foth amp once I got it dialed in. That being said my JJjr sounds great with everything at noon and only needs subtle tweeks. My Splawn Quickrod is a very upper mid focused amp that is very dependent on the cabinet and speakers. Everything at noon through Vintage 30's will rip your head off with beaming highs lol. Something to consider about EQing are the variances between tunings. Not all amps have the same mid focus but in general, I crank the mids and presence on most when using a 7 string and basically anything drop C or lower on a six. For anything in standard tuning, Drop C#, Drop D I don't crank them nearly as high and prefer a more scooped tone.

    The middle knob on an Archon is very similar to an Uberschall middle knob. If you ask me it's the most confusing knob on any amp ever as it affects both the mids and shelfs the highs above. So boosting/cutting the mids also affects treble and presence. I'd say it's nearly unusable. 😄 Touching it requires you to compensate with the treble knob constantly.

The Archon might need the treble or presence turned up to sound "good," which means it is natural "darker." Since the tone controls only cut the signals, what happens if you transpose your settings to base them at 10. For example, you have them at 4,5 and 6, if you set the 6 up to 10 and the other two at 9 and 8? Sounds like I need to do more playing with this.

    • @void_snw
      @void_snw Před rokem +1

      Depends heavily on the amp!
      Some desperately need some cutting in the circuit (fender and marshall bass controls, for example) and some dont. The design intentions can and will always be different, and is always a coin toss (fender BASSman eh? Gotcha!). Then there's interactive controls like bass vs treble on vox style circuits. There's reversed controls, like tone cut on vox. There's EQ before clipping / gain, and EQ after clipping / gain. Sometimes the bandwidth changes with the amount of cut. Some controls are active instead of passive and can add boost.
      Look up the tonestack calculator if you wanna have some visual on common / well known amps' EQs. Then look up Jim Lill and his amplifier tone video. Eye opening and super nerdy stuff.

  • @clemdog76
    @clemdog76 Před rokem

    The one thing I was always irritated by with players who misunderstand tube amps; they’d dime the gain and bass, scoop the mid all the way down, leave treble about noon. They’d do this every time they walked into the stores especially with Mesa amps. Yuck! Boogie’s with that custom taper on bass to accommodate all ranges of recto power-from single rectifier to triple… same preamp… different levels of headroom. This is something that applies in different ways with many tube rigs. There’s also balancing preamp gain with output volume. To get real sweet spots, it’s an art form to know how to blend preamp saturation with power amp breakup. One might say… establish your volume first to set your place in the mix, then eq, then gain; rebalance volume.
    Another thing that almost nobody talks about when it comes to this subject. How much your tone is affected by the space your amplifier is placed in. I once moved my rehearsal from indoors to my front deck one day… just for kicks. I had to radically change my amp eq settings as it suddenly sounded way to honky in the mid and muffled in the high… had to scoop it A LOT! bring up the presence considerably. Open air as opposed to reflective surfaces changed my tone in stark.

  • @Crunchifyable2
    @Crunchifyable2 Před rokem +2

    The whole point of EQ is to make up for variances in volume levels rooms variables etc. By setting the EQ you are tuning what the speaker produces. For example you want just enough Bass the cabinet to get involved. Basically just enough treble and mids.
    Noon settings are basically irrelevant unless you're happening to use it exactly at the volume that it sounds good with those settings.

    • @void_snw
      @void_snw Před rokem +1

      I like that idea a lot, but I wouldn't hold on to it too tightly, as it depends a lot on the topology of the amp. Where are the gain stages, aka where is the clipping happening. This is the main difference in an amps characteristic after all. Another thing to consider if you're using any power amp distortion is the presence control. It can be entirely taken out of the "EQ for the room" idea in that case, as it's part of the negative feedback loop which will affect the power amp distortion and overall feel of the power amp distortion (and it's effect changes based on the connected cab too because of impedance curves!). Sorry if that's a bit much nerding over amps, this stuff is just cool.

    I just got a Peavey 6505+ 1x12 combo recently. Using my ears, I find the amp doesn't ''open up'' unless the presence is at like 8 or 9. Anyone else find that to be the case?

    • @John_Doe..
      @John_Doe.. Před rokem

      I have 6505+, presence is not lower than 8, otherwise a very dark sound, low and resonance at 0. It is this amplifier that needs to be presented in the video, it is quite difficult to set up, while quite common.

  • @dhekke

    Something interesting, for me (and about me, I guess) is that while I was never afraid of twisting knobs to get any gear to sound good to my ears, there's also a level of... I don't know, "shame", that comes with it? Because of this idea that that's not how "professionals" do it. If you need to crank the treble, or bring the bass all the way down, or roll off the tone knob in the guitar, etc, etc, essentially relying on some more unusual settings, I - personally - start to see that as a crutch, based on the idea that this is not how Angus Young, or Vai, or Josh Homme, or any other players I look up to did it. Which is, objectively, a weird concern to have. But still one that I struggle with. Like it's my fault that I can't make my amp sound good unless I bring down the presence almost completely.
    Anyway, this is why I enjoyed the first video and now this one. It's really good to see someone else go through the process of dialing an amp, to help dispel this notion that all your favorite records were made with just some veeeeery slight tweaking and nothing more. Great work, Jon!

      The rest of the band/instruments also have a huge impact on the way the guitar sounds. I think for example Homme probably developed his sound/tone in the context of the band/recording, and then has to figure out how to carry it over to a live performance...

    • @hbo001
      @hbo001 Před rokem

      You should bear in mind that the reference sound of your favorite players is a recording. So you will never know how it actually sounded in the room. Even live performances are mic'ed and run through PA with EQ in the mix. There is IMO huge difference between good standalone tone and mix ready guitar tone. I quite liked the first tone setting(I like more mids). I would just cut the base freq. in the DAW to make it less muddy.

    I honestly don't understand where the thought came from that would suggest setting all your knobs at 12 is an ideal setting. Why even have the knobs? Just make the EQ fixed at that point. You have to adjust eq, drive, etc to dial in different sounds. But then again, there are people who actually think garage band quality (not the software) recordings sound good because they're "raw". It's more a case of people don't know how to dial in a tone and they're justifying themselves.

    so your controls are not adding anything
    like all eq to full & then play Twister only with gain / volume / master .

    I don't think you have to defend yourself to people having dumb opinions.
    Potentiometers have some of the worst tolerances of all parts in an amp, so even if an amp designer tried to make the amp sound best with all controls at noon, they could not guarantee that for all amps built. Combine that with the fact that the sound gets further influenced by guitars, cabs, mics etc.
