    Chapeau to the guy who has to do the same rythm for 12 minutes, while the others around him go wild. That's amazing concentration.

  • @sneddypie
    @sneddypie Před 3 lety +165

    i cant imagine being the guy playing the same thing throughout the thing. he probably has the most challenging part, having to keep a steady underlying rhythm for the other instrumentalists to rely. quite a profound piece if i say so myself, i really want to write something like this.

      It would be easy for him is he actually was playing the same thing, but he's not. Accents and dynamics change all throughout the piece even though the rythm doesnt move.

      I remember this from college, the one had to be pretty solid at keeping tempo and if you got lost it was really difficult to get back in.

    Many other recordings on YT seem to use larger, flat piece of wood, with various mallets, plain drumsticks even. But this here is surely the correct sound - one that is alive :-)

      @Riverside1962 Před rokem +2

      I saw this performed live by Nexus in 1984 at the BBC Proms in London, and they used proper claves similar to the ones used here. A much fuller sound than plain woodblocks. Nexus also used greater numbers of repetitions before each change, making the work somewhat longer (I'm not relying on memory here - I have a tape recording of the concert, as it was fortunately broadcast in a repeat on the radio and I was able to listen again!)

    Yes, the real hero is the one in the middle holding that same steady rhythm without pause for the entire piece - bravo! I suppose the earplugs help him keep his concentration.

    Did you tune the claves? Player 2's instrument sounds like 2 notes, maybe minor 3rd. I remember hiring a set claves to play this piece but we obviously couldn't adjust the pitch. It certainly sounds like whole tone intervals.

      I used to think that way until I was forced to play minimalist music in my chamber orchestra. The amount of focus needed is insane. Once you play it and realize the effect is to be able to see the gradual change. The type of music is actually extremely difficult to write. I encourage you to listen to Arvo Part's Fratres (Brothers). That made me change my perspective on this type of music.
