    Basically: Catamaran uses buoyancy like normal ship but has 2 hulls in the water. Hydrofoil uses lifting force from wings in the water to lift the hull out of the water after reaching certain speed

    • @evernewb2073
      @evernewb2073 Před 2 lety +22

      close: the hydrofoil is the system for lifting the craft out of the water, catamaran refers to designs with 2 main hulls.
      there is no reason that a boat can't be both
      designing a hydrofoil as a catamaran layout makes particular sense in videogames because physics is always going to be a lot more napkin-mathy and your tools for interacting with the game physics are a lot more limited making the stability of the layout rather helpful

    • @Xeno1798
      @Xeno1798 Před 2 lety +10

      @@evernewb2073 That last part is the specific one to focus on for the question. Catamaran's aren't hydrofoils. A hydrofoil can also be a catamaran given the foils are on the extended hulls

      @@Xeno1798 I...um, yes? your' phrasing says you are providing a counterpoint in a nice clear matter of fact manner but what you are saying agrees entirely...am I missing an interaction with the exact phrasing in the video? I made the comment after it was finished so that sounds fairly plausible.
      I did leave a bit out: it looked like a lot of the "hydrofoils" in the video were simply...what's the boating term for it again...planeing? skimming right up on the surface of the water with only the bottom tip of the hull engaged (not a hydrofoil but similar design goals and methodology) usually with some system to maintain engagement cleanly like how racing boats form a vacuum under themselves or the control systems in some of the builds in the video

    • @evernewb2073
      @evernewb2073 Před 2 lety +1

      @@Xeno1798 oh! oh I think I get it: hydrofoil and catamaran aren't their own similar but unique things in and of themselves like, I dunno, hovercraft for example.
      like how a "jet" is really just a shorthand term for airplanes with a specific category of engine acting as their primary powerplant.
      aaand now I'm wondering if you can get away with calling something like a P-38 a catamaran, heh.

    • @maxcalabrese5962

      @@evernewb2073 you're very right about it being napkin-mathy. What you seen this game is very unrealistic. In real life a hydrofoil will stop lifting as soon as it pops out of the water - when it reenters the water it has to overcome the resistance provided by the surface tension as well as "restarting" the laminar flow around the foil.
      My experience is just with kite foils but breaching usually means the board slamming down hard into the water and losing all your speed so its something you want to avoid.
      The exception here would be if the hull has enough lifting area for the boat to actually fly - an idea that was tested a few times with seaplanes but that turned out to be a horrible combo.

    A catamaran has two hulls, (trimaran three, etc.). A hydrofoil raises a hull out of the water. There are examples of foiling catamarans (see America's cup 2021), but a basic catamaran has the two hulls remaining in the water with a structure and usually a trampoline connecting them, whereas a foiling boat has a hull that is raised by foils. Hulls are buoyant whereas foils are almost always just aerodynamic.

    Something to note in that definition is a hydrofoil is specifically a wing that reduces the drag on a boat by lifting it out of the water. So calling a boat itself a hydrofoil is actually the wrong use of the word.
    In summary:
    A boat is not a hydrofoil, it can have a hydrofoil on it to reduce it's drag. However it is still a boat not a hydrofoil.

    I'd say most of those were hydroplanes, a boat skims across the water with a small part of its hull in contact with the water at any given time.
    A hydrofoil would have the hull contact the water, and it would require some structure below the water to lift it out.
    A catamaran is a twin hulled boat, which can fit into either category above.

  • @Not_Dane_Heart
    @Not_Dane_Heart Před 2 lety +1

    A catamaran is a multihull boat, this means that it has more than one hull allowing it to lift it’s center out of the water. A foiling boat has wings on the bottom which push it out of the water at speed. This means that they only work once that speed is met while a catamaran always has less drag, so a catamaran is not a foiling boat. However, you can get a foiled catamaran which would have a very high top speed and would be the sort that would win races such as the fastnet.

    a hydrofoil is defined by its use of airfoils submerged in water to provide a minor amount of lift, enough to push everything but the wings themselves, and the underwater propellers, out of the water for minimum drag. a catamaran is defined by the ship possessing multiple hulls resting in the water, rather than a single hull, that together provide more stability. if a regular boat is a wide wheeled motorbike, then a catamaran is a car if that makes sense. something interesting is the idea of the ekranoplan, which as far as i am aware is the official name since the only other one i know of is 'ground effect vehicle'. this is basically what happened when you take a hydrofoil, and give it enough lift to bring the wings out of the water as well, since water resistance is affected by how much of the ship rests in the water, if the ship lifts out of the water completely, there is nothing for water to resist. the result is a 'too fat to fly properly' aircraft.

    For that rocket hydrofoil, I'm gonna say the backwards cockpit is totally on purpose. I'm betting the creator is a keyboard & mouse player who wants and expects W to be up and S to be down. At the least, the built-in flight control drives me crazy for that exact reason... I hate flying with keyboard and will grab the controller if I get into anything that uses cockpit flight control.
    Maybe I was blind, but I couldn't find anywhere to change the control scheme, and on keyboard I really expect W to pitch up and S to pitch down. Pull back to pitch up and push forward to pitch down feels natural on a controller, but on keyboard... up=down/down=up just doesn't work for me, not on arrow keys and not on WASD. When I can I'll always flip it. Similarly on controller I always have forward=look down/back=look up, regardless of whether it's a character or vehicle that I'm controlling in the game.
    ... also, it's just possible that the creator actually does use a controller, and has just been trained by too many RPG games that forward=down and back=up, which is the default orientation for basically all of them anymore, much to my annoyance. But I tend to keyboard & mouse whenever possible except when driving vehicles... when driving vehicles the analog controls are, IMO, really desirable.

    My guess with the difference between hydrofoil and catamaran, is that an hydofoil is a wing thus it produces the upward force needed to sustain the ship weight via lift, while a catamaran uses buoyancy and archimede’s principle, keep in mind that this is just an educated guess, im not an expert

    2:53 "I don't actually have roll, I have pitch and turning"
    Why don't you just say yaw? It's shorter and more accurate.

    So I guess you can still call it a glitch

    Scrapman, I got an idea. Make a beyblade and surround it with magnets facing outwards and use thrusters to rotate it. Use a swivel to cancel out the beys rotation and place another swivel on top of it and place some thrusters to use for changing directions (in instruments of destruction)
