I was manually zooming, which is part of the reason why it gets shaky sometimes (not to mention it's a heavy camera to hold for 2-1/2 hours straight!). The T3i is a DSLR, so you have to actually turn the lens barrel to zoom, while simultaneously keeping a finger on the focus ring to adjust for the different focal length. It's tricky to do hand-held, but I'm getting better at it. As a film student, I love the quality and the fully-manual capabilities of DSLRs, but they do have their drawbacks.

Wasn't really planning on it, but I may end up doing it eventually. Too damn busy right now. :)

Thanks I am going to find out how to purchase the Tascam Recorder. How long does your camera battery last for concerts?. I am a newbie at this forgive me if I am asking a lot of questions.

No worries! I usually end up switching batteries out towards the end of the first half of the show (I do it during one of the narrations that I don't particularly care about recording). If I'm lucky, I'll get to the end of the show on that second battery, but I'll usually pop a fresh one in during band introductions just to make sure. Audio recorders are much simpler: a fresh pair of AAs for the audio recorder will have no problem making it through the entire show (and then some) while recording constantly.

Nice video and sound. What setttings did you use for the Zoom H4N. I want to purchase one of those audio recorders. Also, what software did you use to get that audio quality sound?

Thanks! The H4n was actually under my seat and the audio ended up pretty muddy, so hardly any of that audio was used in this mix. This is mostly the audio from the Tascam DR-07 MkII, which was on my lap. It's a fantastic little recorder and I love the sound quality on it. It's now my go-to audio recorder for mounting on my camera, unless I need the XLR inputs of the Zoom for a particular project. As for settings, I don't really remember....it was too long ago haha! I didn't do anything fancy, though. Pretty much just standard factory defaults. The main thing is to make sure you're getting nice hot levels without clipping at all. The audio was edited in Reaper.

Is that rich full sound coming from the Tascam Recorder with no added audio software?

The audio was edited quite a bit in Reaper afterwards. My brother is an amateur/semi-pro audio engineer, so he worked his magic on it for an afternoon when he was in town. Just the raw audio from the recorder still sounds pretty darn good, though (especially compared to most CZcams concert videos).
