    Hello, Does the orientation of the cable matter? As in, if I am running the cable up to my ceiling and over a pulley, should the cable run 'under' (so it's closer to the wall) or 'over' so it's further out? Also, is the cable supposed to run in front of or behind the spacer bar, or does that go on the opposite side? Having trouble determining the correct orientation to use. Thanks!

    • @DuttonLainson
      @DuttonLainson  Před 7 lety +1

      Mike- thanks for your question! Yes, the orientation of the cable definitely matters! When installing cable onto any Dutton-Lainson worm gear winch, the cable should always be installed so it comes over the top of the reel, never under the bottom of it. Also, the cable should always be going off the reel straight towards your load, not back in the direction of the spacer bar and the rest of the winch. Incorrectly installing cable in either one of these ways could damage the winch or cause it to not function properly.

    WG2000 is top quality. I installed it easily on a wooden beam in my garage. I use 3/8 aircraft cable to lift antenna mast. The winch is very precise and the movement is slow and controlled. I do not trust winches with brakes. This model brakes on its own by design.

    My company ordered the split reel part no. 10952 and cable part no. 24069. There is only a hook on one end of the cable so do I need to use a splicing sleeve on the other end of the wire to make a loop for a separate hook?

    • @DuttonLainson
      @DuttonLainson  Před 4 lety +2

      Thanks for your question! You are correct- none of the cables we sell have a hook on both ends, so if you want to use one on a worm gear winch with a split reel (such as part #10952), you'll have to attach a hook to one end of the hook yourself.

    Hi, just wondering if the Dutton-Lainson worm gear winch is easy to use for pulling 300 lbs of dead weight on a wheeled cart from 85 yards away down a steep trail with small obstacles on the way? Thanks

    • @DuttonLainson
      @DuttonLainson  Před 9 lety +2

      Abba (This reply is being re-posted as our original response from six months ago was deleted from CZcams)
      Thanks for your question!
      The short answer is yes- you could use one of our worm gear winches in this application. However, there are a few things to consider:
      1. Because you'd need 255 ft (85 yd) of cable to cover the distance you described, it would have to be extremely small (3/32" in diameter) in order for it to fit on the winch's reel.
      2. Because our worm gear winches have a very high gear ratio (meaning you have to completely turn the handle a minimum of 30 times to complete a single revolution of the winch's reel), pulling a load 85 yards would take a huge amount of effort and time on your part, so one of our worm gear winches with a HEX drive shaft (allowing you to power the winch with an electric drill) might be a better fit. However, operating the winch with an electric drill for the amount of time it would take to pull the cart 85 yards will generate a lot of heat in the winch bearings.
      If you only need to bring the cart up the hill with the winch and do not need to let it back down, you might be happy with a ratchet type pulling winch. The model DL1602ADD has a direct drive capability so you can pull in line very quickly and then change to a 5.4 to one gear ration if cranking gets more difficult. The drawback is that if the winch has to let the cart back down the hill, the winch ratchet has to be released and it is totally up to the operator to maintain control of the winch handle which will want to spin freely. This, of course, creates a risk of injury if the operator loses control of the handle during this cart lowering process. www.dutton-lainson.com/proddetail.php?prod=14520
      Another alternative, if the winch needs to let the cart back down the hill would be one of our self-locking brake winches. This might actually be the best choice for you because the handle cannot get out of control. However, these winches do have a minimum load requirement during the lowering process in order for them to operate smoothly. Our DLB800A (dutton-lainson.com/proddetail.php?prod=14912) might work for this application, as long as the cart creates at least on the winch 50 lbs during the lowering process. This winch could also be fitted for operation with an electric drill if you wish. www.dutton-lainson.com/proddetail.php?prod=14467

    Just bought a 1500 worm drive. Can it be rigged with high strength synthetic rope such as kevlar , dyneema, or spectra ?

    • @DuttonLainson
      @DuttonLainson  Před 7 lety +1

      Jim,
      Thanks for your question, but unfortunately, no- we do not recommend that you use these types of high strength synthetic ropes on Dutton-Lainson winches. Because these ropes are extremely slippery, they pose a high risk of severely damaging the winch's reel and ultimately the winch as a whole.

      Marcell- thanks for your follow-up question! We looked into this further and have determined that we also do not recommend using nylon rope on any Dutton-Lainson winch, for the same reasons stated above for high strength synthetic ropes.

    Is there a standard drive to hex drive conversion adapter? Bought the WG2000 recently, assuming they all came with the hex drive, but mine only has the standard drive. I can probably rig something up myself, but I question if the standard drive can handle hire speeds noted for the hex drive. Thanks.

    • @DuttonLainson
      @DuttonLainson  Před 2 lety

      Thanks for your question, Kristin! We don't offer any kind of adapter or kit to convert a WG2000 with a standard drive shaft to a WG2000 with a hex drive. However, it is a very simple process to change drive shafts on our worm gear winches. All you have to do is pound out the pin holding your winch's standard drive shaft in place, pull out the standard drive shaft, slip in the hex drive shaft, and then pound a new pin in the hole to hold it in place. Both the hex drive shaft (part #406102) and pin (part #205246) can be purchased from this repair parts page on our website: www.dutton-lainson.com/proddetail.php?prod=WG2000

      @DuttonLainson  Před 6 lety +1

      Thanks for your question! Yes, the cable installation process outlined in this video would also apply to installing rope on one of our worm gear winches. However, synthetic rope cannot be used on any D-L winch, and you would first have to be sure that the rope you have in mind would be strong enough to handle the loads you plan to lift or pull with the winch.
