A years worth of memories are gone. :( Ah, such is progress. I lived in UHall 1 as a frosh (1972), and didn't know or care that these were not the best acommodations on campus. It was just home at the time. My friends were part of the "zoo", fellow frosh of the likes you might find in National Lampoon's "Animal House". We climbed the trees. We taunted neighboring UHalls with put downs emblazoned on dorm room windows using Christmas tree lights which we flashed on and off (like you'd find in a red light district). We knew we were the equivalent of plebes, but it didn't matter. In a year, things got better housing wise after a move to North Campus, but strangely, I never had as much fun as I did that year. NO one of any stature ever came down that hill to visit with us. If we wanted intellectual engagement, we had to first trek up Libe slope. That was life in the UHalls. The "West Campus Experience" was only a gleam in someones eye. I see things are better now, although with cinder blocks, no one ever cared if you scruffed them up a little.
I’m an alumnus, class of ‘91. This is not my West Campus. I was there during the days of the University Halls, officially nicknamed the U-Halls, but unofficially called the Zoo Halls. The unofficial moniker was well earned. I was stuck there my freshman year because housing application packets for the Southeast were misplaced in the mail, and the Zoo Halls were the only things left. Civilized people and upperclassmen lived on North Campus back then. How times change. I would have loved living in today’s West Campus, except for the wall that is Libe Slope. Oh, well.
The University Halls were thrown up in a hurry to handle the flood of G.I. Bill veterans. They were supposed to be temporary. Who knew the Barf Bar would endure so long!
I got admitted into Cornell University and I hope I can get a room in the West campus. It looks amazing and have so many activities to participate 👍🏼
