  • We were thrilled to receive the brand-new Grizzly G0490ZX Jointer-but things took an unexpected turn! From a smoking belt to a flooded garage, this unboxing and setup was a rollercoaster. Despite the chaos, we fixed the issues and share our honest first impressions of this powerful tool. Watch to see how we turned disaster into success, and let us know-should we restore the jointer's surface after the rust incident?

Waiting on my G0490X to be delivered, this was super helpful!

Oof... just watched the leak portion. For the top surface refinishing, you can try the same process for other cast iron tops like table saw/band saw. I spray WD-40 on the whole surface, then use a 400 grit mesh pad on an oscillating sander at low setting to "wet" sand the imperfections off (I have a dedicated cheap wired sander for this because while I don't think sucking all the liquid through sander has damaged anything... I don't really want to use it for wood). This will not remove any deep rust spots but its aggressive enough to clean off the surface, just don't leave the sander in one spot for too long. It's unlikely you'll create "low spots" with this but just to be safe keep the sander moving across the entire bed. Once you think you've got it clean enough use acetone and clean shop rags to wipe up the gray slurry (get it all off) and then you're ready for waxing. With the J&J paste wax I'd actually recommend at least three coats, but it depends on your region of the US you live in. I have to do this on my table saw at least once a quarter here in Georgia because of humidity.

Ha, we’re kicking ourselves for not waiting a few more weeks!!! We never considered the G0490X would go on such a good sale! Congrats!! Win some, lose some, I guess 😂

Thanks! Yeah, I usually do several coats of the J&J paste wax.
I think we’ve decided to just leave the top as-is. Luckily, we caught the water leak quickly enough that it was only cosmetic damage / no actual surface problems.
After running several pine & basswood boards through now (super inexpensive workbench build coming up soon!!), I’m finding I don’t even look at the surface. Ha, it’s covered in sawdust half the time anyway. 🤣🤣🤣
Congrats on the new jointer!! I’m sure you’ll love it!! It probably took me about four total hours to get it truly flat to the blades (I’m within 1/640” - decided that was close enough). Here’s hoping yours arrives without needing any adjustments. 🙂

@@buildingmodern Thank you! I'm really hoping they decide to bring it up my driveway like they did yours lol.
Did you ever figure out what the last piece you needed to attach was? I figured it might be related to a rabbeting feature or extended jointing without the guard.

I still have no clue. It must be for rabbiting as it’s working perfectly fine without it. Best of luck! Here’s hoping they do bring it up to your house - it’s a beast otherwise!

So sorry you had a pipe break! Nice to see you though.

Thanks! We keep telling ourselves that it could have been worse 😂
On the positive side, no tools were ruined, and even the countertop didn’t have any permanent damage!

Thanks for the video as videos on this model are hard to find it's so new and I'm currently putting mine together having bought it during Massachusetts Tax Free Weekend. One thing though. I find it highly amusing how every DIYer has that same fucking cheap blue drywall square hanging around somewhere even though I've never once seen a professional using one after I figured out that drywall wasn't my thing and started hiring for that.

Hahahahahahha, that’s great - the blue drywall square! We honestly need to throw ours out - it’s no longer square. 🤣
It turns out, they stay square with *minimal* use - but, one you start using them for real, they get out of square.
Next time we do drywall, it will definitely be time for a new one. We mostly just use it for a straight edge right now (can’t ever have too many straight edges for reference).
Thanks for watching! I hope your jointer needs less adjustment than ours did!! I ended up getting ours within 1/640” and decided that was good enough 😎
