    For those people looking for a similar size screening tree, that will tolerate heat and drought, check out the Skyrocket Juniper. While the Emerald Green Arborvite is a beautiful tree, it does not tolerate heat, wind or drought well at all. The Skyrocket Juniper has a more silvery-blue foliage, and it grows about 15' high and 3' in diameter. I live in Central California, In zone 9b, and the hotter it gets the faster the Skyrocket Juniper grows (about 18" plus per year). I have 40 Skyrocket Junipers in my yard , and they are all growing great. They have gone from 4' to about 10' in just under 3 years, and they have survived temperature extremes from 28 degrees up to 110 degrees in 40+ MPH winds. I just wanted to make this comment since I see a lot of people looking for a hot weather alternative to the Emerald Green Arborvite. However, Jim is spot on with his descriptions and suggestions, as usual.

    We planted 15 trees, watered and mulched, they all started dying, browning, mildew and blight after 3 weeks. I took all the mulch off, poked holes around the root ball, I’m now treating them alternating between baking soda spray and hydrogen peroxide spray, plus watering occasionally with diluted hydrogen peroxide. Mulching incorrectly cuts off oxygen to the roots. I now water 40 min. Once a week with a soaker hose. The first year these seem to be high maintenance

    Will 4 feet between my fence and concrete be enough to plant this tree for privacy or should I get something smaller, I just need about 8 feet tall plant or tree or something...my house is on a corner lot and the side of the house facing street is where I would like to add a privacy screen so people won't see the inside of my yard. My yard sits high so everybody that drives by or walks by can see me. I thought about lattice too but I like the idea of a natural privacy barrier better..like I mentioned before I have about 4 feet of dirt between fence and concrete slab.. I will be needing something too to block my neighbor since he has a 2 house story facing my back yard.

    Would it be OK to plant along a fence? I have my backyard fenced and part of it shows in the front of the house and I wanted to plant the belong there to just hide the backyard because my dogs keep it not looking so pretty. Im in 7b too. AR Ozarks. Also, the website where I purchased them said 3-5ft per year. I had a feeling it was an exaggeration! I've got pure clay veins. It's pretty when you dig into one! What's weird is, I've planted several trees, and lots of perineals, and I've found less than 5 rocks! When I was a kid every few months we had to go out to pasture and pick up rocks, the same thing pasture grew rocks! Lol I thought Arkansas had more rocks than it had soil so whomever came and got all the rocks out of my soil I'm forever grateful! But because on my relatively large city lot I have 3 silver maples the roots make up for the lack of rock! LOL the big silver maple is so gorgeous, it hangs almost like a weeping willow, otherwise, I'd have them removed! I hate those, gown on top of the dirt roots! I mow part of my lawn on 3 and part on 2! My friend S me why don't just MOL on 3, but I just don't like it that tall. I don't know why anyone would plant a silver maple? These may have just grown there. I pull up hundreds and hundreds of maple trees a year! I have never seen seeds germinate as well as those deeds do without even trying. The other day there are 7 silver Maple trees Rowan and the corner of my roof in the gutter! I am female and Dang near 60 years old it was probly quite a sight watching may climb up there and pull trees out of my gutter lol

So watering that many would be an issue. I’ve watched multiple videos and these appear to need water quite regularly. Would I be better planting more of a local tree such as a red cedar? I plan on adding a second row of blue spruce on the inside part of these next spring. Thanks for the input.

      @Alden Buyer Very good advise! For the homeowner that is not going to check the soil dampness, I'd suggest weekly when the summer temperature is 90 degrees or less and twice weekly when it gets over 90 degrees. That assumes little summer rain as we experience in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. This would also be guidance for the first summer. After that arbs should be well rooted in and do fine all summer without watering except for the unusual (for Oregon) 95+ hot dry spell every few years. My timing assumes the plants are well watered as you suggest.

    Great video. I planted a row of 3-foot-tall arborvitaes last spring and was told not to fertilize this year. Do you recommend fertilizing since this will be the second year?

    • @DaruDhillon
      @DaruDhillon Před rokem +1

      You can fertilize in the second year but it's recommended to water your soil first to avoid root burn as cedars have shallow roots. Good luck!

    Hey Jim, we are in northwest Raleigh. Love your channel!
    Looking for a small tree that we don’t have to prune at the corner of our 2 story home. ( just took out 2 hollies that had become difficult to keep tidy) considering this plant but concerned about deer. Any thoughts?
    Part sun area.

    I'm in zone 7b Looking for privacy planting full sun and this sounded great until the thing about the dryer soil conditions and taking years to recover the brown/dead foliage. Do you have any suggestions? I was considering Emeralds , Nellie stevens hollie, or green giants only I don't want to prune too often. I subscribed keep it up.

    I absolutely love these trees for screening plants and planted 15 of them along my driveway. I am on the hunt for a screening plant between my yard and the neighbor's. The issue is its a very wet, soggy area. What would you suggest for a screening plant that can tolerate wet conditions and provide privacy?

      You may be able to find a good ornamental grass to plant at the base of your trees. Some of those grasses grow 4-6 ft or more.

    Hi! I just bought 3 of these and of course then watched your video. I live in western Oklahoma zone 7. Could I plant them on the east or north side of our house and possibly deter some heat stress that way? They would get sun till about 1 or 2pm in the summer then shade during the heat of the day.

    • @JimPutnam
      @JimPutnam  Před 6 lety

      They will need at least six hours of direct sun to not get leggy. So I definitely would do the north, but maybe the east would work.

    What do you recommend for privacy to plant along a 6' fence in the backyard in New England? I want something that will block the neighbors deck all year long and grow about 10-12' since our houses are so close together. Easy to maintain would be nice too. The yard doesn't have a lot of direct sunlight either. Thoughts?

    Hi! I just planted a row of these five days ago into my heavy clay soil amended with garden soil and their bottom branches are drooping! Please help. I’m so nervous they’re going to die. I watered them thoroughly upon planting and again the next day and the soil is still wet (used a pH/moisture/light meter). Could they be dropping because they’re too wet? Should I water again? I haven’t fertilized them but have some tree and shrub fertilizer spikes I could add. Should I go ahead with those?
