One detail you forgot to mention:
Whenever you lose most of your troops, AoM’s music shifts to a more somber and melancholic tone and stays like that until you retrain your army.

Speaking of AOM's faulty AI, I have to say as a kid I always thought it was intentional. As mythic units' special moves glitched out more often than normal soldiers, I used to assume it would represent how rowdy, proud and uncontrollable the mythical monsters were at war.
Years later I found out it was just an excuse I made for my favorite game's bad AI pathing and target selection

Like fully throttle back against someone - even if it's just made up stuff like 'you owe us this or do... because the government is pretending it's the right thing to do with no functional scientific evidence (that's why it sucks living in a passive global society). Whenever it comes down to those scenes, it's either I a) go and help the wounded or harassed peoples or I b) just go straight towards wanting to smash the enemy's face in.
The only time I give - c) try and communicate and find some common ground/broker peace, is if I have a background to the current situation.

My favourite thing was the fact that every unit had an "i" button where you could get additional information about the references and history/mythology behind them...even trees and fish had them which was just a super nice way of getting one interested and maybe understanding the developers thoughts a bit better.

    1. The Atlantenas were my favorite civilisation tbh . They were basically this jack of all trades, master of none. Yeah, they had so much easy access to everything, but they didn't excell at anything either.
    2. One of my biggest gripes with the game is that you can kinda tell that pieces of story and dialogue were cut pretty close to release. We know this because entire lines of dialogue that add *so much more context* have been datamined over the years.
The Titans DLC and the Antlantean Campaign was probably the biggest victim of this.
The story was good, but asked a ton of questions, introduced new elements and elaborated on *very few* of them.
Like, how did the Kastor and his group of Atlanteans get stranded if Ajax and Odysseus were leading them back to Greece? Were they banished since we know Agamemnon was pissed at Atlantis for ignoring the Trojan War? Did they get lost? Why did Ajax and Odysseus never bother looking for them, especially with Arkantos' son being one of the survivors? Did they assume they were dead? If so, Kastor being the one attacking them actually becomes a *significant* reveal and the lines that showcase Ajax interacting and actually *bonding* with Kastor over his similarities to Arkantos kinda heartwarming.
Its little questions and snippets like these that kinda make the story of the game as a whole bit less enjoyable. And its a shame because it was probably a budget and time issue rather than a lack of creativity.l as , again, we have a good idea of how much was cut super close to release and I genuenly hope Retold takes the time to restore some of this content.
    3. Last but not least, this is just geneally a good review. Funny, informative and brought back some nostalgia from having played this game all the time as a kid.

8:20 Fun fact, the ships were originally meant to be larger & function like the ships in Rise & Fall: Civilizations at War do where you determine a ship type by staffing it with land units. This was simplified in production into the ships we know today. During the campaign & in the editor you can access a second type of dockyard next to the normal docks, that additional dockyard is also a remnant of the older naval system that was aborted in production.

I used to watch my dad play this game on our family pc when I was a child. Eventually I began to play it, and continued to play it long after he stopped. I remember getting the Titans expansion for christmas one year even though my dad hated me playing games on the PC, however he knew that we both loved Age of Mythology. After he passed I found comfort and massive amounts of nastalgia in playing the game, even listening to the soundtrack. And after seeing the trailer for Age of Mythology Retold, it brought tears to my eyes as a game that both my father and I invested so much of our time into, is finally getting the light of day it deserves. And I know that when it comes out, my father will be sitting beside me watching me play it.

One very cool campaign mechanic in AOM is the Trojan Horse level. You don't actually need to build the Trojan Horse. You can attack the city and if you destroy it completely, you won't have to play the part where they sneak into Troy. You just skip to the next map.

In Warhammer my units have collision and multiple units can attack a single entity. There is no 1v1 anymore and collision exists as well so my biggest complaints are fixed which is why its apart from Medieval 2 my favorite TW.
Only bad thing is that in WH3 they rushed it and did some bad stuff to the unit behavior but appearently thats fixed now too? I have to see when I will play it again in a few months.

Thanks for this video! I was a huge myths & legends nerd back in secondary school and I convinced my parents to get us a PC so I could play this game. Reading all the little entries in the in-game encyclopedia about all the units and technologies was wonderful. That legendary campaign with the siege of Troy, putting Osiris back together; and the fantastic music and voice work that lives rent free in my head - absolute classic game.

So few people actually remember this game sometimes I wonder if it was just some reoccurring fever dream I had in middle school. If you can believe it, I picked this over RTW at a book fair, thus sealing the deal that my introduction to Total War would actually be Medieval II. I've been very happy to see content creators very sneakily putting references to it in their videos along with Pre-Reforged WC3.
Also, as a long-time fan who discovered you back in the Dark Ages of Rome 2's release date, glad to see you're making content again!
Furthermore: you can't hide that Operation: Genesis icon from me. There's your next project my dude. What a game.
You also hit the nail on the head: I like that I can watch replays and take epic screenshots and appreciate high fidelity, but most of the time if you've got a brain you're not looking at how many polygons a footman's breastplate has. You have bigger fish to fry. Taking too long to enjoy a clash on the frontlines means you're probably about to get outmaneuvered somewhere and you're caught with your pants down like a British general having tea at Islandwana. This needs to be appreciated more: games in this genre that not only look good up close and personal but that still visually stimulate when you're actually playing the game. This is why Total War Let's Plays to me are generally awful and why you can't really enjoy a stream. I tried streaming once and realized it was trash because I was too busy zooming all over the place playing the game trying to manage things in that quasi-trancelike state my brain goes into in these games. Before I knew it I had like two hours of me not saying a word. Who enjoys that? This is why I like the better-edited and commentated videos, because you can actually follow what's going on and it's enjoyable. Nobody - not even fans of the series - want to watch someone else play the game, if for no other reason than you keep going, "Did you really just do that? What a fucking clown."
    >DoW2
    >Better Game
With that you came dangerously close to losing my sub. Your Good Boy points saved you.

Thanks Volound! Beyond watching your videos, the most I've done is get Atilla for 10 dollars in a sale. I had a decent bit of fun with that, played Warhammer 1 a bit after it was in the humble bundle, and launched Warhammer 3 one or two times because it was on gamepass lol. Haven't gone for any of the others...
You've really drilled down into them, and I think you're videos found the core of what I don't enjoy about them. You don't win or lose battles by maneuvering your units into the right positions to encircle enemies anymore, it became impossible to defeat a expensive unit by outplaying them with cheap units. I'm guessing they did that so that players can't abuse the AI like you can in the old games, but now it just means that there isn't much playing going on at all. Its like CA have created the missing link between auto resolve and playing. You can sort of influence the battle, but if you have crap units, you're guaranteed to lose to someone just right clicking on your dudes. I think the power fantasy and the RPG progression are the main kicks people are getting out of the new games, and sure I can switch my brain of and play them whilst watching netflix or youtube to kill time, but there's lots of other games that do that, and the other games are just more fun.

    • @Volound
      @Volound Před 2 lety +1

@@reynoldsanity4320 cheers, sane. glad to hear youve been keeping up with the critiques and think i hit the mark. i of course remembered your critiques and angry joes rome 2 review and made sure to give them their proper shout out when i started out with those. felt like taking up a fight that had been mostly been allowed to go cold, and felt obligated to connect the old with the new and give you all your dues.
should say it wasnt actually intended when i started playing TW again that i would make any more critiques. i took a long break (just like you), but came back in 2019 just intent on playing and uploading RTT/RTS (similar attitude to you, pretty relaxed), and total war was there. troy arrived and was shocking and one thing led to another and a lot of further critiquing was done (and i always felt i didnt quite say everything i wanted back with the rome 2 launch). maybe youve occasionally had the same feelings, maybe not. it wasnt something that ever bothered me or pre-occupied me. just motivated me to get to the bottom of things a bit harder now that total war actually had my critical attention again, i suppose.
been pretty funny to observe the train going down the track further without feeling like i was ever onboard. it has arrived at some pretty bizarre places in the meantime. there are even people making high view videos saying rome 2 is good now, that took up my attention a few months ago, you might find those funny if you missed them.
will be interested to see your video on supcom if it ever comes. i havent played either of AoM or supcom, but people urge me to get around to playing supcom all the time. also, ive deliberately avoided playing any of the warhammer games, you could even turn your critiquing gaze upon those if you felt prepared for the possible backlash (but at the same time, people have never been more receptive to warhammer being shat on). its a mostly untapped and possibly very ripe genre - warhammer specific critique. i suppose people are too motivated to just jump on the bandwagon and offer up praise and clickbait, and too reluctant to engage with the fanboys. i think youre 100% spot on about the power fantasy and RPG progression.
whatever the future has in store for you, ill be watching.
