  • Got a lot of questions after I posted a photo of my new scalloped fretboard. Here is the idea behind why you would choose to go with a scalloped fretboard.

    • @andrewsprague4566
      @andrewsprague4566 Před 9 lety +16

      Ivan Bratoev I may be wrong, but couldn't there be a purpose for scalloping the back? Not for every fret and maybe not full on scalloping, but making indentations behind the fret markers. It may be a kind of crutch,but they would just be able to feel where the marker is without looking. Since some bass players also sing, this would probably be pretty helpful.

    I have the benefit of using CNC machines for this. The shop I work in has a CNC mill that is used for prototyping and repair jobs. On weekends it doesn't get used. So I ask my boss for time. As long as I lay tarps to keep wood chips out of the chip conveyor and coolant tank and return to normal before Monday morning, I can use it to my hearts content. I have written programs to mill out pockets for Floyd Rose trems, routing out pickup cavities, modifying cavities to convert a single coil to humbucker, etc. Two weeks ago I used a ½ ball nosed endmill to scallop a solid maple neck/ fretboard. I laid it out, wrote the program, and voila! Perfect. The further up the neck I had to switch to a ¼ diameter endmill, the frets are too close together.

      Well... Assuming you want to come back to a comment made 2 years ago....
      Scalloped fretboards are almost entirely about bends, and affect little else.
      Some people like using really low string action, which helps with playing faster. The downside of that is it's really hard to be able to grab the string to bend it. So when you have a scalloped fretboard, that gives you a lot of room to grab the string and bend all day.

    • @jamesmiller9823
      @jamesmiller9823 Před 5 lety +1

      If you play with light touch and you like a low action scalloped necks are great. All of my gutiars have scalloped necks and I love the feel of them

      @ThZuao Před 6 lety

      Not really.
      The bit about friction is correct. You do get on and off strings a little faster.
      The downside is that it's easy to bend notes sharp if you have a heavy fretting hand. Especially troublesome with chords. But you can do some neat tricks with it, like single string vibrato on a chord.
      I've thought of doing it to my El Cheapo. That guitar only has sentimental value, but it's the only one I have, and as a hobby player, I plan to make it the only one at least until I graduate. I know my way around a file, but if I fuck up, I'm afraid my guitar playing days are over.
