- Got a lot of questions after I posted a photo of my new scalloped fretboard. Here is the idea behind why you would choose to go with a scalloped fretboard.

Why not both
Why not neither?
Rob scallop
I almost felt really good about my inability to sweep pick.
Riley Barringer It depends, for how long have you been playing?
+IVAN3DX i cant sweep pick too :)
Luke Valentino But I can't hahaha. I can barely rake
+IVAN3DX I can mop, heh heh...
I play the guitar with a vacuum
If you look very closely you can see its sped up a little
Just a little...
I laughed way to hard at this
Look closelier.
Tritonus Seitan spell betterer
Look even closelier.
I thought this was Rob Scallon not Kmac
Rob was Kmac before Kmac was born
Jealous people will say it's fake.

Scallamed
A scalloped fretboard? More like a... SCALLONed Fretboard
Rob Scalloped
Jaxon Duin you beat me to it
Heeeyo!
I'm thinking about scalloping my potatoes, but that's another story... altogether.
I scalloped my bollocks. Didn't do much for me.
please post a video about it! :)
I scallop my potatoes because it helps get the actual potatoes out of the way. That way it's just you and the fork
watched this in 2x speed and it sounded like pac man
Through the fire and the flames we carry ooooon!
sounded like pacman in regular speed lol 2x i aint even gonna try it =)
totally pacman
Watch it in .25 speed for a good laugh as well
I am a fretboard and I find that offensive
Ok
+Fedor Voronov I am offensive and I find that fretboard.
+Fedor Voronov im a csgo and i find that global offensive
Rob, I've watched every video you've made and seen every video you've been a part of. You have worked very hard to hone your gift of musical talent on each instrument you've mastered. I'm proud of you for having one successful niche here on CZcams. I'm curious as to where you are going next. I'm looking forward to your band, album and tour.
Aw man I was really looking forward to seeing how fast you could go :(
But... You did though. Didn't you watch from 0:51?
SMOOTHCR1M O h shit my bad my internet must have gave out when that happened!
Omg u ppl he sped it up.
assassinskittles
nah............
assassinskittles No way! Really?!
Oh I get it! The band on the screen is Nitro, and when he speeds up his sweeping, it sounds like their lead guitar player! Rob, you sly devil, you.
Everyone is complaining about the lack of scallon jokes but I'm wondering why no one saw the link between the sped up solo and the nitro picture......
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Sneaky little... besterd
I-
This is the most straight up informative video on CZcams and I say that in all honesty. Thank you!
NITRO wallpaper FTW :D
0:55 Scallon levels up
0:53 Rob pulling an Instagram guitarist before it was cool
To the bass players: 1. don't do it 2. scalloping is for the fingerboard, that's the side where the strings are, not the other
You can scallop bass necks if you want what are you talking about?
Jacob Cousins I was trying to make a joke about bassists being so dumb, so they would scallop the back of the neck, but apparently it didn't work ;d
Ivan Bratoev so you assume all bass players are dumb do you?
Jacob Cousins Oh, common, a typical bassist joke.
Ivan Bratoev I may be wrong, but couldn't there be a purpose for scalloping the back? Not for every fret and maybe not full on scalloping, but making indentations behind the fret markers. It may be a kind of crutch, but they would just be able to feel where the marker is without looking. Since some bass players also sing, this would probably be pretty helpful.
I see you've been practicing the Lucas Mann technique.
He's right. He was much faster the second time lol.
I have the benefit of using CNC machines for this. The shop I work in has a CNC mill that is used for prototyping and repair jobs. On weekends it doesn't get used. So I ask my boss for time. As long as I lay tarps to keep wood chips out of the chip conveyor and coolant tank and return to normal before Monday morning, I can use it to my hearts content. I have written programs to mill out pockets for Floyd Rose trems, routing out pickup cavities, modifying cavities to convert a single coil to humbucker, etc. Two weeks ago I used a ½ ball nosed endmill to scallop a solid maple neck/ fretboard. I laid it out, wrote the program, and voila! Perfect. The further up the neck I had to switch to a ¼ diameter endmill, the frets are too close together.
Thats cool dude, I've had to scallop my gutiars by hand and it takes forever but its worth it .
I'd love to give that a try. I've used some Jumbo frets and love the feel. Apparently scalloped boards fell like that but more.
...so how about jumbo frets AND scalloped fretboard together!!!!
Shout out to Nitro on the desk top!
MAB is crazy
Scallops for Scallon...sorry I had to do that
+Andy S. This was the first I had heard of Scalloping a fret board so I honestly thought he was making it up and naming it after himself. :-P But seriously, I need to play on a scallop neck now to feel the difference!
at least he is not a shrimp and does not stink like tuna lol
So...for people who were actually wondering about scalloped fretboards, this video is useless?
+Stuart Livermore Watch the video again
Yes that seems to be about right.
Well... Assuming you want to come back to a comment made 2 years ago....
Scalloped fretboards are almost entirely about bends, and affect little else.
Some people like using really low string action, which helps with playing faster. The downside of that is it's really hard to be able to grab the string to bend it. So when you have a scalloped fretboard, that gives you a lot of room to grab the string and bend all day.
If you play with light touch and you like a low action scalloped necks are great. All of my gutiars have scalloped necks and I love the feel of them
What are you talking about. This video cleared all my doubts
Actually if you want to master sweep picking you can do my method : There's a Jason Becker lick in the video "30 shredders in one solo" of Ben Higgins that initiated me in sweeping. I repeated the lick and gradually increased the speed. Now I sweep like Jason Becker.
Just kidding, I scallop'd my fretboard LMAO
You made me smile. Thank you.
Thanks for the explanation Rob!
Listen to the sped up solo while the speed is on 2
+Packie McReary now watch at .25 listen to his voice
It sounds like the guitar is having an orgasm.
default Brain Drill song :/
It probably is.
he sounds drunk man
A Scalloned fretboard, anyone?
this is the quality content I subscribed to see
Almost 4 years later, and this is still solid...
I suppose it could be known as a.... Scalloned Fretboard.
hey Rob, real question though, if you ever see this, does sliding still work well with a scalloped fret board?
Im glad you did a video on a scalloped neck guitsr! Be surprised at the people that don't know a thing about one.
Pretty funny. I recently picked up a scalloped board Tele/Strat neck and it feels so different coming from a regular fretboard, almost like it has a higher action. It sure is great for bending though.
This gave me serious kmac vibes
I think I might scallop my didgeridoo; I hope it helps...
I don't think it'll do anything to a percussive instrument.
paudeline It's a good thing a didgeridoo isn't a percussive instrument.
FinN It's not? Really? Anyways, I love how you correct me, but not the guy that thinks you can scallop a didgeridoo.
paudeline Because he was using sarcasm...
Actually, scalloping it would do something. It'd change the way it looks. Not that I was really planning on scalloping my didgeridoo (yes, I own one) though; it was a joke that was too subtle for captain obvious. ;)
He actually slowed this down for all us old viewers out here. Thanks dude.
Can you do a bass guitar version video? I've been exploring True Temperment Frets, Scalloped fingerboards, Taylor tuning, String types and their manufacturing techniques, as well as Tone-woods and Hardward and the way they affect the (bass) Guitar.
WTF? Is that Nitro on your screen?
+Svil Buscus thought i was the only one who noticed that
+Just1n Is H3re Yeah, so is Nitro....well, sort of.
Just1n Is H3re That is deffinately Nitro.
I like scallops. Don't know why you would put them on a guitar though.
10/10 will most def carve out my guitar to reach speed of light in sweep picking.
Thanks Rob senpai!
Whoa that was fast
Does it affect sliding?
You are fucking insane bro! Love your playing man fantastic musicianship!
I thought this was a main channel video until you showed us your sweep skills
if you look very closely, you can notice he sped up the video
but does it djent ?
It really suprised me when he said he wasn't really good at sweep picking cause he's such a technical player
*I mean you can’t argue with that*
I came here to comment Rob Scallop/Scallon Fretboard.
But I was too late
well are you joking about the benefits of scalloped fretboard or not?
I am hoping you're ignorant to the fact your user name sounds like a racial slur and that you're not a bigot
funbeingspun833 it's a joke mayne. I'm a black fella in real life
+funbeingspun833 u triggered or smth?
Not really.
The bit about friction is correct. You do get on and off strings a little faster.
The downside is that it's easy to bend notes sharp if you have a heavy fretting hand. Especially troublesome with chords. But you can do some neat tricks with it, like single string vibrato on a chord.
I've thought of doing it to my El Cheapo. That guitar only has sentimental value, but it's the only one I have, and as a hobby player, I plan to make it the only one at least until I graduate. I know my way around a file, but if I fuck up, I'm afraid my guitar playing days are over.
That was super funny!
Ur a comedy legend
125 people scalloped their fretboards and didn't get the same results..
so basically it's pointless
As good proof of concept as it is ever gonna get
Well,...I'm sold.
why not fretless guitar? XD
+TheNeokiller666 how about a fretless scaloped fretboard?
nah that would be to weird fretless need to be as flat as possible
Ha ha! :)
nice
Helo
Love the Nitro wallpaper!
You really got me with thisone x)
Not sure, can't put my finger on exactly what but something doesn't seem right with this video.
Its Sarcasm, for those to dense.
totally uninformational
The kendama on your desk was my favorite part.
Awesome!
legend
THAT NITRO DESKTOP PICTURE!!!!!! THAT IS BADASS!!!
Dude played so fast he ruptured the space-time continuum.
Solid evidence👌
nice one rob scallop
Is there any tonal difference between the flat and scalloped fretboard? Are chords easier to play or just leads? Price?
he got us in the first half, not gonna lie
"can't argue with that!"
Just got in to say gj Rob Scallop
love you
He's got such a nice voice
Dude i love the picture of Nitro on your desktop.
I actually have a guitar that has some scalloped frets but only the last few like 15 to 24 or something like that. It feels much better to play these frets on that scalloped guitar than on my strat that does not have that
No I can't argue with that
Can't argue with that...
Can’t argue with the factz
Darn, I kinda actually wanted to see a longer vid on that
So.. scalloped fretboards can give me the power of the average Herman Li solo? Yes please!
I'm convinced.
Cool Fretboard
It also allows for vertical vibrato... indepentantly on any string.
Scallon's Scallops - There has to be a restaurant in that?!
The benefits of a scalloped fretboard:
None.
Playing faster is awesome, but does it change the pitch as well because his sounded really high pitched?
Nice! I can sweep pick just a tad quicker, so if get a scalloped fret board I'll be the next yngwie right?
That was hilarious.
Love the Nitro screen saver
....that is a good point..
There we go. Rob Scallon - Kmac2014.
