Uhm, I tuned my kalimba and nudged the tines here and there. Recorded it with both iphone mic and external zoom h1 mic placed behind the instrument. But actually iphone sound came out pretty good. Then I added a bit of reverb effect to give the sound some room :3

I just got it one week ago myself and never had to choose XD Get 17 notes kalimba in C major, it is good for most melodies. The ones that have hole sounds louder. You can get something good for 20-30$ on Aliexpress.
