Americans are notorious for assumption of understanding in general, not only in the US.
Nobody will ever post anything online without mentioning any location details.. if you see a question on a web forum that doesn't mention where the user is from, they are American.
Americans will also say "Oh yea, here in NV we all do this" wtf ? Im supposed to know all your states and their abbreviations?
This is true for in-person interactions as well. I used deal with a lot of foreign nationals at my previous job. Every time a European, Australian, African, Latin or Asian person tells me something, an antidote, a reference or any bit of information, they give me context.
Yea, i have a flight to Paris, or i live in the south of Germany.
    Americans:
Oh yea, I'm landing at LAX.
I'll take the E23 to ___ (enter place name) and meet with the AG of DC.
    I just drive a Chevy C3PO
Oh.. Dan John is actually a friend is mine.
What are you talking about people?

Le titre est litigieux... Ne serait-ce pas plutôt "Why can't European pilots understand *Américan* ATC?"
