Ruby shatters her bellhousing…

- Ruby runs a TH400 with manual valve body, 5000 stall converter and transbrake. Her flex plate and scattershield are SFI units.
After 5 seasons and 100+ passes, it appears that the rear trans mount came apart which caused the HD case’s bell housing to shatter at the shift into second gear.
A change in trans mount style as well as a new HD case outfitted with an UltraBell bellhousing has us ready to go for 2024.
My dad bought a 1964 Impala from a co worker back in 1977. When we went on family vacations, That car only failed once. August of 1980, in Ely Nevada, A water pump bolt came loose and tore open that radiator. We got help from the locals, We got to a campsite and the next day, The car was ready to go. You can't kill the damn things. When my dad passed away a few year ago, I inherited it. I had a bet with my brother, He bet me five dollars, He wanted to see how good I really was. after an hour, The car was running. But your car, That is a beautiful work of art
Aye Caramba. I did that to my '57 Chevy a long time ago and it sucked. It tore up everything even the floor tunnel. Ruby is a beauty!
Thanks for liking Ruby Dan... Yeah, it was a mess - the trans tried to spin 360 degrees and there's plenty of evidence on the floor boards. New trans is in and we added an Ultra Bell, so fingers crossed that issue never resurfaces!
My 66 Chevelle Super Sport has a Lakewood Blow Proof bell housing, 11 inch clutch and M-21 Muncie
Scatter shields are live savers but when your cast iron flywheel let's lose even with block saver plate you might lose you engine block
I helped a friend bring a business into very prospering status which meant more money for his racing effort. I got him a fresh rebuilt HEMI prepared by a professional. In they guys own words: " This engine will make power."
But my friend would not purchase an explosion proof trans blanket. He wouldn't put a driveshaft loop on the car. He got some guy to make a roll cage out of exhaust pipe. I've known his wife since she was 6yrs old and I couldn't live with myself if he blew up his trans or rolled his car and got hurt. So, I don't go there anymore. HE HAS THE MONEY but WILL NOT put safety stuff in his cars. In the words of my auto tech teacher: " When you change things on the car, you become the engineer." Meaning all the original engineering is compromised once you make a change, and you have to make sure it's still safe.
There’s definitely no reason to not have the appropriate Safety equipment… it’s insurance that you and those around you are as safe as possible.
Years ago, I was at the drags sitting at the wall. A big block Corvette went by and lost his clutch shifting to 2nd. The bell housing came apart and a piece the size of a lemon exited the car, skipped off the track and nailed me in the arm inside of my elbow, knocking me off the hood of the car I was sitting on. Bleeding, I went to the ambulance but had to sign a waiver before they’d treat me. My parents weren’t real happy when we got home that night.
Yowza! I bet that hurt!
First thing to do in a case like that is seek a good attorney!
@@nashvillecop1Why? To waste money on a consultation fee? Go to a track once and read the signs at the entrance gate....
I would add a small mid plate or mid side mounts ( too much stress on transmission case in a car with this kind of torque without one )
Chrome Reverse wheels will always be the coolest… 👍🏻
didn't even know they made race turbo 400's with removable bell housings until now
Yes… and Ultrabell makes them to be fitted to OEM transmissions. The old bell housing is cut off, and the new one bolts up using the pump bolts. It’s super strong… This is what we did for Ruby.
Whoa! Good looking car
Thank you!
@@DragCityUSA. Poor Ruby I had a girlfriend once with a shattered bell housing she was not able to have children😂😮
@@malcolmwhite6588 😂🤣😂
OUCH! That’s why we need to use an approved bell housing.🤷♂️
The HD cases are good for up to around 800 hp… but the Ultrabells can’t be beat. Ruby’s would probably still be intact but the rear transmount failed which is what I believe caused the destruction.
She’s got the Ultrabell now! 😎
Happened to me years ago , butthole tightening moment . Dont think I coulda slipped a needle in it . NEVER use fake pressure plate bolts !
Thanks for the comment Marc! Ruby’s running a TH400 with 5000 rpm stall converter and transbrake. After about 100 passes, the heavy duty GM bellhousing came apart going into second gear. She’s been outfitted with an UltraBell bellhousing now and all is good. 🏁🏆🏁
Mantap bosky Mobilnya😁🙏
Thank you!
I am liking the '54.
Shatter shield suppose to be 100 percent bullet proof
While nothing is 100% bulletproof, the scattershield did its job. In this case the bellhousing shattered due to the transmount failure.
The scattershield on an automatic covers the case only, not the bellhousing.
Is Ruby a 62 ? Looks pretty nice ! 👍😎🇺🇸
Hi Mark, Ruby is a ‘63.
Thank you!
Remember when you could buy a 63 Impala for $50 to $100 ?
lol… no, I don’t! 😎
@@DragCityUSA. Well, I'm 70 now, but when I was a lot younger I bought a 69 mach one for $400. I should have kept it.
You don't run a scattershield? Blanket? Why not?
Yes, she’s got an SFI Scattershield… but that only deflects debris away from the floor of the car, and they only cover the case, not the bellhousing. Keep in mind this is a TH 400. This was not a manual transmission clutch explosion.
Sooooo slooooow
Should have bought a Tesla
Just kidding.
Made in China 😆😂🤣
