I was taken aback by the unexpected news that Thomas, my friend, sold the house I inherited from my dad for $450,000. The revelation came with an oddly cheerful tone as he shared it over the phone from the hospital. To add to the surprise, he boldly announced that he's planning to embark on a trip with his mistress.

Was her name on the deeds of the house?
Yes, he couldn't have sold it without her signature and consent.
    No, it wasn't her house.
Though admittedly it was a complete AH move.

I notice the house price in the story does not match the title.
Sorry, but this story sounds fake.

All of these stories are and this AI narrator is quite bad. these are generally out of Japan and the title might be a bad translation.

I see she inherited the house, which means that it is in her name or at the very worst, joint property.
The Married Women's Property Act from 1848 (in the USA), pretty much put a stop to this kind of thing.
Before that time, a woman's property became her husband's, to do as he wanted with.
So he could have taken her (then soley his) house and sold it from under her, prior to that time.
Divorce was a lot harder back in those days then though, just to curb this kind of behaviour.
