Paint Every Fruit & Vegetable!
Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!
My daily practice is painting every day. I work on mostly small, 8x10 inch acrylic warm ups before attempting anything larger. I learn the most about painting when I do these exercises. Each one becomes a quick lesson I could have only learned by painting a lot of small ones.
Two of my fun subjects to paint are fruits and vegetables - I call these my Farmer’s Market series. Why? Fruits and vegetables are the easiest for me because of their forms and colors. So many choices and opportunities to experiment and paint like a mad scientist. Early in my career, I ordered an annual Burpee Seed catalog to see what the many fruits and vegetables looked like, inside and out.
First, choose your subject! Hold it, taste it, photo it and paint it. Paint this first one many times, then move on to other choices. By painting and practicing this way, I have learned more about Pineapples, Pears, Chili Peppers, and more! This demo is about setting up my warm ups of an Avocado.
First, I gather my materials: Holbein Artist Acrylic Paint, bucket of water, big brushes, paper towels and 140 lb Kilimanjaro watercolor paper.
I start the demo by sketching the avocado. The paper was already covered with a mid tone orange, so all I had to do was to initially put in the darks and lights. I added a strong light source so the highlight and the shadow that anchors the avocado are both pronounced.
Next, the color! I keep the sketch loose and quick, using short, choppy strokes. I start off with a limited color palette of only four colors plus black and white. The outside avocado skin is dark and I use a variety of dark colors: purple, green, red, blue and black. The inside is a creamy green yellow, surrounding a dark seed.
The final touches are re-establishing the shadows and the highlights!
Now I think it is time to paint a Pineapple. Join me for my next online Monthly Demo of Pears, Pineapples and Peppers! You can watch how I start my warm ups and ask your questions in real time. Plus, you get a recording of the session.
NOW - Order your own Burpee Seed Catalog!

"It's all fruits and vegetables," Thanks for your always uplifting and informative videos!
Thank you!
I can be heard in my studio often, reciting Bob's nuggets of wisdom. "Stop tickling it to death Aimee" "Show people how much fun it is to be a painter!" "Where is your light coming from? Duh!!" haha! Thanks for another fantastic lesson Bob, much love to you and Kate!
Appreciate it! Thank you! I think we all talk to ourselves in the studio LOL!
@@RobertBurridge you're welcome! And I'm so glad to know even the best artists like yourself still talk to themselves in the studio 😄

Enjoyed this very much. I think I learn the most just watching you paint and hearing you talk through your process. These are the videos that are the best - for me, anyway.
Thank you! People tell me that during in-person workshops too.
My cat prefers paint water to the clean.. You're quite right! Lovely video!
Absolutely! Thank you very much.
I have read that this can be because of the ox gall that is used as a propellant (but this may be isolated to watercolor.)
Thank you and all the best
Thank you!

Post script. As many children , our initial classes involved fruit, vegetables and flowers. I painted a bearded iris for my mother on long Manilla drawing paper that was worthy of a ribbon. Think “the” paper closet . Later , my youngest son would do a water color of bananas in a bowl that was striking . Children have no filters , thus produce masterpieces. We all express . Next time I’ll tell you about My Aunt Gloria who was the art superintendent for numerous burroughs in New York.,
Yes we do! Thank you for sharing!
Beautiful work. Bob makes acrylics look like oils.
Thank you. I learned to paint with oils - we didn't have acrylics yet when I went to art school.
I do my best to detach once I fill a page in my art journal and move on……
Good practice Jill!
