  • En route to Utah, the first setbacks of the season present themselves. With weather, avalanche danger and crowds, the first line of the year is met with difficult decision making, trepidation and the need for patience. As the crews change and time goes by, the reward becomes that much sweeter.
    Featured guests include Pep Fujas, Drew Peterson, Joe Johnson, Weston Shirey and Cinematographer for The FIFTY, Bjarne Salen.
    This is line 2 completed of The FIFTY, a project following Cody Townsend as he attempts to climb and ski all fifty of the lines and mountains chronicled in the book, "The 50 Classic Ski Descents of North America." The series documents Townsend's journey's, travels, challenges and each line and mountain listed in the book. It's a journey through the most majestic mountains and ski lines in North America along with a unique insight into how skiers make decisions in the backcountry, how they plan, navigate and safely move through the mountains and the people that dedicate their lives to the mountains.

    I loved that you showed the "snow-pack-test"! I think that too much skiers don`t know that pro skiers check for avalanche conditions before ripping crazy lines etc. In ski movies we usually don´t see the consideration that goes into skiing these lines. Thanks for spreading avalanche awareness. By the way, nice Vlog/podcast!

      Totally agree! Showing a "no go" decision is essential to showing how much consideration goes into the days before you get the great day.

    First, the skiing was incredible to watch. But second, that climb up superior in the winter after a 40-inch dump is so incredible. Having been up Superior so many times, your video didn't do justice to how incredibly difficult that trek was. I am blown away. Most people who do Superior jump in a whirly bird. You gave the mountain its due respect and scaled it!!! I am in awe!!

    When i first started ski touring 25 years ago, I had Scarpa Double leathers, kazama couloirs, and of all things, voile snake skins. That dowhill section of the ridgeline past cardiff peak was so difficult on the snake skins that I used to take one off and try to go as far as I could up the ridge with just one skin on. Pretty sure it didn't make things any easier.

      @CodyTownsend  Před 5 lety +10

      onecutmedia.com actually, what you’re referring to is just a CT, which is a fully acceptable yet older form of snow pit test. What I was doing is called an ECT or Extended Column Test which studies have shown to give less false-stable results than a CT and they give far better recognition of propagation potential. You should do some reading on updated Avalanche education, it’s always evolving and improving

    • @avybites
      @avybites Před 5 lety +3

      Great explanation on the ECT it is a great tool in the tool box! I think it is also important to note that a snowpack test is just one piece in the overall assessment of the avalanche hazard. You dont make a go or no go decision based on that one data point but after a collection of information that helps understand the complete situation. The more complex and consequential the objective the more data collection.
