Have you wondered how to use charcoal in mixed media paintings? Whether you should seal the charcoal before painting on top and how to do it.
In this video I would like to answer those questions and show you what I do when working with charcoal and mixed media.
Why would we want to seal in the charcoal before painting on top with acrylics or oils? What happens if we don’t ?
If the charcoal is not sealed in it can get smudged or rubbed off completely. If you want to use acrylic paint on top of a charcoal drawing the colors can become dirty or muddy looking as the charcoal particles mix with the paint.
So if you are looking to build up layers in charcoal and perhaps combine them with acrylics or oil paint you will need to seal or fix the layers of charcoal before adding paint on top. See my 4 step process here.
I invest a lot of time and love in filming and editing the videos so I'm happy for your support. Please consider leaving a comment, sharing with a friend. You can also give me a thumbs-up or subscribe to the channel if you would like to see more videos like this one :)

Thank you Marie Louise for always sharing your techniques. You do such a great job of explaining things so clearly. I love your work and always look forward to your posts. 🎨🖌️☀️🌙⭐️🌎
Glad they are helpful 🎨
I work with charcoal quite often and find it's a great medium for expression. I love the moods I can evoke with just a few simple strokes. Yes. It smudges very easily. But that's part of the appeal for me cause I love to work with my fingers and spread the loose charcoal powder around. So much fun to work with! Excellent advice on sealing charcoal. Spot on!! Cheers from New England. 😊
Never used charcoal in my painting, but, with your tips, it is worth a try. Thanks again 🙏👌👏
I found this site at just the right time in my life. So much great inspiration and help. I have been doing very tight graphite portraits for the last few years, abandoning any use of color. You have given me courage to get out my watercolors, neocolors and gouache. I am not in a situation to use acrylic so I will make do with the supplies on hand. Do you ever use gouache? Thank you so much for your generosity.
Yes definitely use what you already have and get creative with that. I haven’t really used gouache although I have some… saving them for later I guess (like so many other art supplies but I really should get them out)
Thanks for sharing and watching 🌻🌻
Many thanks. Inspiring as usual.

Thank you so much, Marie-Louise, for this instructive video. I'm gonna get me a new canvas to try this out.👍
Yay, happy painting!
Thank you.
gracias profe desde colombia mil grasias Álvaro👍
As always, another wonderful video!! I LOVE charcoal! Its helped me recently to get a few things in my head onto paper.
I also love water soluble graphite, which looks awesome if, before sealing it, I use a hard roller and roll some white over it to get some streaks of white but them then gorgeous interesting gray from the graphite. Same with charcoal, but charcoal is a lot darker so, gotta watch how much.
I use the fixative spray, but really love the tip about the gloss medium. As I have had issues with it pushing through.
Does the gloss affect how I paint over it? Just curious.
Thanks SO much for all your help!!🥰
I am really intrigued by your paintings. I love the looseness! I was wondering, what brand and type of paper are you using? Thank you!
thank you*
Hello Marie and Thank you so much for this wonderful instructive tips. Can I use charcoal with Oil paint? I mean after the oil paint completely dries and use fixative?
Mange tak for dine flotte malerier. Hilsen fra Frankrig.
I've had good luck with non-aerosol fixative. I think it's SpectraFix? Not as noxious as the aerosol brands though since the mist is heavier than an aerosol, I put my painting flat for this stage. Kind of a problem with a really large painting.
I didn't know about that product - thank you so much for letting us know. I'll try and see if it's available over here. Thanks again 🌻
Is it the same procedure with oil pastels
