This is what I heard at first too, then I started to really listen to the song. To me this sounds like, something happening during some sort of war, or post apocalyptic world. It sounds like the couple received radiation poisoning, and they know they're doomed. There are some hints in the song that indicate this. "Post war books supported my frame of mine." "The lantern died that night, but we didn't need to see." and around 2:36 is a huge indication, pretty much that whole verse is a dead giveaway. Another bomb just struck, and they take final look at each other, right before their final moment together. Really listen, I wouldn't think this, but there are some strange references in the song, that don't quite fit with the tone of the song.
