It’s actually less of ”What situation is appropriate to put Ellie in?”, it’s more a question of ”What story can they tell with these characters that’s at its core rooted in some deep, universal and powerful emotion?”
What drove Neil to write Part II the way he did was that he wanted to not just follow the standard ”How do we recapture the beats everyone loved from the first game?”, something he called a recipe for disaster, but he wanted something that could be as fundamentally, emotionally poignant. So the first game had this core theme of the love between a parent and child and for Part II he chose this theme of intense hatred all tied up in that same old feeling of love and the idea is to put the player on an emotional arc. So Part I sees your relationship with Ellie grow in tandem with Joel’s and by the end you care for her like a parent. In Part II they make you hate Abby as much as possible and then try to bring you back from that and come to this emotional realization that it’s not gonna fix you to kill her, so your journey of anger and grief exists in a tandem relationship with Ellie and Abby.
I think that because Neil if anything will use this more artistic approach rather than any sort of narrative prediction you could have, and because Part II’s ending is so wide open, with Ellie letting go of Joel, having lost everything and heading off to parts unknown that the game could be about almost anything, so long as it continues and concludes Ellie’s arc in some deeply profound way that the player themselves can follow along.

I like the idea in the video, as bittersweet as it is, tho I would also love to see ellie and her family come back together or as you said, maybe a lone drifter for a while, and she has a moment somewhere along the line that having people to love and protect and work for a better future is something she finds hope in. Or ultimately, because of of her immunity. Like the video, she gives herself for the cure.

That’s been done so many times. But yeah, I think they could go that route if there was something new they could offer. Why would she be protecting the baby though? Is he immune like she was? Then she would know what would happen to him at the end if she handed him over. Even if she pulled a fast one at the end and sacrificed herself at the end, which would wrap the story up nicely, that would be an obvious ending. Why is that story worth telling? I’m a writer. So I do this for a living everyday. And you need certain things to be able to tell a story. Not just a cool concept.

Anyone who thinks Joel wasn’t absolutely selfish and crazy for saving Ellie is just delusional about this topic.
He robbed the planet of the chance for a vaccine because he loved her. But by doing so they just expanded the amount of dead bodies not only caused by infected but by Ellie and himself.
Like it’s just idiotic to argue against it: if Ellie’s life was worth dooming millions, how come the life of the ones she brutally murders are not just as worthy.
TLOU is beautiful but part of that is knowing the main characters are not good people and they are being as “human” / animalistic / savage as it can be: surviving and wanting to life their own lives.

You have to understand the bar is set so high with these games. So the story has to be on the level of the first two. I could see where Neil could do a Part 2 at the end of Part 1. Even though it didn’t need it. I can’t see where he could do a part 3 at the end of two. And I’ve played the games a dozen times each. It’s just nothing there that would satisfy people. Joel is gone. As much as it’s sucks to say, there is not story left for Joel. Especially playing as him. Her moving on from all the trauma and instead of her being a spirit of Vengeance & Anger, the story could be about Ellie helping people.
It could be a story similar to 'No Country For Old Men' or 'Red Dead Redemption 2', wherein the World is moving on from The Virus & Chaos, the world is coming back from a Modern Wild West to a somewhat normal World, there's no cure but Civilization has learned to deal with the Infected.
Different Factions are coming into power and are working together and trading in order to bring back civilization.
3 Should be about Hope, but also Ellie figuring out that her time has gone, the time of Survival and Chaos and Civilization coming back.
The themes of a bygone age coming to an end, similar to RDR2 & No Country For Old Men.
The world doesn't need people like Ellie anymore, Fighters & Survivalists.
But instead of fighting for Anger & Hatred, she can be fighting for a Future.

We see Joel meet Tess and Tommy join the fireflies etc. See what happend right after Sarah died. It'd propably demonise Joel even more, but he isn't supposed to be good anyway. It's guaranteed to also sell good bc Joel is in it as the main character.
They can also introduce all new people in an all new setting. It'd have nothing to do with Joel and Ellie. It's a risk, but could be worth it. The last of us can exist outside of Joel and Ellie. It wouldn't be part 4 or 5, but still carry the last of us name

I think it's a really interesting idea, and I really hadn't even considered a story about Ellie and Tommy. I've always considered that relationship to be pretty irreparable after what happened in part 2, but it would definitely be interesting to see them reconnect, but I really don't think that the story needs to or should end with Ellie dying even if it's for a cure. I think a lot of part 2 is spent focused on her frustration with Joel's actions in part 1 which comes from her belief that her own life is meaningless compared to dying for some greater purpose, but she seems to accept what happened and is able to forgive Joel which I think is a really sad but beautiful conclusion to their relationship. When I see Ellie leaving the farm, I see that as her forgiving Joel, forgetting about Abby, and moving on with her own life, so a game where she would ultimately decide to die for a cure seems far less hopeful to me than a game where she finds meaning and purpose in living despite her guilt. I feel that her dying would show that she doesn't value her life, that she's still controlled by her guilt over her immunity, and that she never really understood why Joel saved her.
Also I feel like Abby's story came full circle really neatly in part 2 and bringing her back in any major way outside of dlc or something would feel unnecessary to me.

Exactly, a story where Ellie sacrifices herself for a cure completely undermines her forgiving Joel and moving on, it’d mean that the entirety of part 2, Ellie trying to forgive Joel, and seeking revenge, was truly for nothing.
You may say that it already was for nothing, due to her letting Abby go at the end, but it wasn’t, Ellie finally forgave Joel, and a her subsequently throwing her life away after that would imply she hadn’t actually forgiven Joel and leave their relationship (even in death) truly irreparably ruined, and for a series that is entirely about Ellie and Joel’s father/daughter relationship, that’d be really really fucking disappointing.

    • @iasar718
      @iasar718 Před rokem +3

@@a9dm460 yeah i totally agree. Also I feel like people who say that Ellie letting Abby go made everything pointless kind of misunderstood why she decided to go to Santa Barbara in the first place. She's clearly doing terribly on the farm, and she decides to leave just as a last hope that killing Abby will fix her or at least that she'll die trying to kill her, she even gives Abby a chance to fight rather than just executing her. If she was filled with rage toward Abby, the ending would be weird, but nothing in the game really points toward that.
Also they've been pushing the idea that Ellie should find purpose in her own life pretty hard even throughout part 1 with the note from her mom literally saying "life is worth living", Riley and Ellie choosing to wait it out rather than killing themselves, and of course Joel's "keep finding something to fight for". I think it would be a pretty huge mistake to go against all of that in part 3, but I more or less trust they know what they're doing at this point.

It’s so funny seeing this. I was just going to tweet Neil Druckmann that I would love to see a continuation of Abby and Lev’s story. I want to know what happens, if they make it to the island with the new batch of fireflies or not. They could even call it by another name so people aren’t even bigger bitches about it than they were about part two when it came out.
I am also playing part one and two back to back. I’ve just reached Abby’s part in Seattle Day 1. What they did was absolutely genius. Turning the theme of revenge completely on its head. Who is more entitled to it? Joe killed her father, the only one capable of making a vaccine even if there was another person immune. Was it any more or less justified for her to go after him (?) and all that. In the end, apart from the game just being too nuanced and ahead of its time for most people, that leak certainly did not help. Had the story been able to unfold naturally we still would’ve seen some ridiculous criticisms, but it would’ve unfolded much differently. I mean, even cast members received death threats for fucks sake. Death threats for pouring blood, sweat and tears for years and years to bring us the best piece of art possible. it still bums me out to this day.
I do think the upcoming series on HBO looks fucking incredible. And I believe that will take things to another level. i’ve said this for a while, but I do think the day will come when this game is treated with the appreciation it deserves. There is a lot to be said about the toxicity of PC gaming culture as well. People having empty opinions about something based on watching footage on CZcams versus actually holding the controller in their hand and feeling the vibrations. It’s like saying “I drove a Ferrari” only to follow it up with “well, I saw one drive around the block”. By that logic every NASCAR fan is a driver.
Anyway, yes. Since the end of this game two years ago when I last played it I have really been wanting to find out what happens with what I think should be an obvious direction as to where a part three could (and should) go.

@@DrPooplove it truly is tragic. Like so many other things it seems motivated by fear, or quite frankly “FOMO”. You often see it with PC gamers over exclusives. Things they are mad they cannot partake in.
I think using the same machine (PC) used to bicker with people on social media and various comment sections actually bleeds into the games they are playing. Or should I say “watching”. Whereas if you have a console: it’s all about the games. Completely separate. Not having Twitter or Reddit joined at the hip to a game that requires full attention.
The only thing I’ll concede; Druckmann shot himself in the foot 100% with the “indefinite delay” after having several delays already. Especially when a pandemic started, and we were all entering quarantine. It was a huge white light ripped away. Which is why the leak came from a disgruntled employee.
Other than that, we are nothing but lucky to have these masterpieces. And I do think this new HBO series is going to cut down on some of that toxicity because it’s going to make a much larger audience. I think will see a difference after that. That’s what I hope for anyway.

If anything, I think the aspect of love that could be really important to discuss could easily be covered through Ellie, which would be understanding that often times non-action, distance, and making an effort to understand and appreciate others' decisions can be an equally strong and sometimes more difficult way to love someone.
I could see Ellie being forced to come to grips with "if you love us, then leave us alone" and then having to struggle with the guilt/ difficulties that come with Jackson struggling, raids on the city, even more apocalyptic issues like the Cordyceps spreading to other mammals like horses, dogs, livestock, etc...
Maybe she dedicates her life to finding a cure, travels the continent, studies medical books, basically goes on a 30 year pilgrimage of self-flagellation to figure out how her condition could possibly have meaning, only to find that by the time she gets back to Jackson with a solution, the world has begun to reset itself, and things were made right by her absence.

Definitely want a third game to bring the themes of the first two full circle. Part I was love, Part II: hate, and Part III would be centered around hope, namely the hope for redemption (for both Abby and Ellie, and for mankind.)
Game would open with an Ellie 5 years older, living a life of solitude in the Rocky Mountains. She never returned to Jackson, despite the longing to do so arising every day, she remains tortured by the events of the second game, even though she allowed Abby to live; PTSD entangled with guilt has driven her into isolation.
One day, while out hunting she is attacked by a mysterious, well armed paramilitary unit led by a masked man who is also immune, and who wants her captured, dead or alive. Ellie manages to evade the squad of elite soldiers, but is seriously injured in the process. Her brush with mortality pushes her to return north to Jackson in hopes that some semblance of familiarity remains there, all the while wrestling with the will to continue living.
She is awoken in the middle of the night on her journey back to Wyoming by Lev, who has also been tracking her. Lev informs her that the remaining Fireflies have learned of a research facility in close proximity to ground zero of the outbreak, South America, that has been facilitating the development of a vaccine. The researchers there are at the cusp of understanding the infection, but are in need of the missing link; someone with immunity.
Lev beckons Ellie to seek a purpose beyond herself, as the message of the Fireflies would encourage to do, “look to the light,” but he leaves out the fact that it is Abby (reignited by a sense of purpose to redeem herself by carrying on her father’s cause) who intends to lead this journey.
Ellie initially denies Lev’s request to make the journey to the facility with him, but is prompted to reconsider when she discovers that the Wyoming settlement has been decimated, most likely by the paramilitary group, and all that remains are infected, including, most likely, Dina and her son, JJ.
The game would follow Ellie, a reluctant but inspired Abby desiring her own kind of redemption by furthering her father’s cause, Lev, Tommy (one of the few survivors of the attack, burdened with his own sense of guilt), and a small group of Fireflies as they attempt to navigate a ravaged Central America, initially off shore by boat, but eventually overland when their vessel is destroyed by the paramilitary group hunting Ellie, who it is later revealed, has JJ.
The militaristic group would be revealed to be a splinter faction of the US military, FEDRA, initially tasked with waging war on the Fireflies and their cause. The Fireflies, it is revealed, are guilty of conducting vaccine trials inhumanely on live subjects comprised of PoWs, most of whom are FEDRA soldiers. However, there is an ulterior motive at play in the mind of this faction’s leader, who desires to keep the development of any kind of vaccine from ever becoming a reality.
Ultimately, Abby would sacrifice herself to save Ellie during a final massive battle between the militaristic group and the well defended research facility, and Ellie would go through with the terminal procedure, this time of her own volition, thereby finding the light in the midst of darkness engulfing the world, even the Fireflies. Whether or not the vaccine proves effective would ultimately be up for debate; the game would end at the moment Ellie breathes her last and her heart rate monitor flatlines as she lies on the operating table; her journey for personal redemption has come to an end.

Ellie should definitely live thinking she gave her life for the cure. But there should be a period of mourning with her because now she has nothing to live for. Then grow feeble and old and die. She needs to bounce grandchildren on her lap who don't understand the infection and can only play video games about it. Abbey and Ellie should become fast friends because they beat each other to a pulp. Abby dies heroically protecting Ellie. Redemption accomplished. But some new mutation should arise starting the whole process all over again.

I think that while Tommy is acting as kind of a replacement for Joel, Ellie should sometimes look at Tommy, and be able to see Flashes of Joel in those sweet somber cut scene moments, I would love to see that, and I think it would be a super cool aspect to the game.
Or instead, I also think it would be cool if Ellie could be around 25 to 35 years old, and have Dina's kid be Ellie's new partner, and kind of make a nostalgic effect like how Joel and Ellie were in the first game, and the kid and Ellie are kind of distant because Dina left with the kid. Dina dies or SOMETHING and Ellie has to go with the kid, and their mostly awkward around each other, but Ellie doesn't trust the kid like how it was in the first game. The objective in this game however, I think maybe Jackson is running out of Materials, too many people/overcrowdings or there's a bad sickness (NOT THE ZOMBIE SICKNESS), and Ellie is immune, because of her already immunity to the other sickness (idk how it's going to work, maybe Dina saves Ellie or something by giving her the last of the medicine, and that's how Dina dies?) but resources are kind of dying out, so they hear something on a radio, or find new info about a jackpot of medicine or something that will help out Jackson tons. Somewhere in the story, Abby, or someone and Ellie meet up, with their little buddies. And like in TLOU1 Ellie gets Levi, and Abby gets Whoever Ellie's with, and it cuts off here with A flashback, or nostalgic moment in Ellie's mind.

It’s good that you did, I thought the gameplay , graphics and polish made up for the horrible writing and directing

I like this idea, but I actually would like to see part three be more about Abby and Lev, and their new journey. And introduce new characters. And obviously I would like to see Ellie in the game as well or if not that maybe just a game about Joel and his brother and about how he met Tess and all the adventures and all the horrible things that Joel had to do in those 20 years that we didn’t actually get to see.

Your take on a potential TLoU part 3 is insane. Insanely GOOD. Naughty Dog should just hire you to filter out some crazy ideas they may have. You have such a clean and nuanced look on things, just imagining part 3 the way you described it brings me so much happiness. Literally praying this comes true, can't get it out of my head now!

I think it will be important for Lev to be a playable character rather than Abby to differentiate itself from the second game

I’m thinking in the end Abby will develop the same skills as her father (but better) and she will be the one who can develop a vaccine without killing Ellie.
On the other hand, we all had major ideas on part II and nobody was right about it. So let’s have Naughty Dog surprise us with a new masterpiece with an unexpected story!

  • @nirvanalives23

Considering the ending, I really imagine Ellie to be more like a anti-hero figure in a Western style. I just imagine the first scene of she entering a town with a huge clicker problem and resolving it to then leave the town with no notice. Maybe the story could connect with her dealing with the fireflies somehow and with Abby.
On the other hand, I REALLY would like to see Dina in a more involved active role. So..what about controlling her as the sucessor of Maria? She has a family and she has deep feeling of community and bonds. So what about she tries to streghten the community so nobody can be excluded...in other words, to let anyone become or feel what Ellie felt in her life? Remember the teenagers that died running from Jackson...there was some pressure going on. So, if the third part its about hope, this should be about the society, not science. It would give a really could significance of what Last of Us its about: humanity.

There is a 20 year gap after Joels daughter died that we never got to know anything about. Also id love to see how the virus started out by seeing everything, like Tommy calling sarah and Joel outside the house and so on.

I personally would love to see a third game focused on Abby and Lev. I loved Abby, she was my favorite part of the game and she had the better gameplay sequences of the 2 in the game.

Abby should remain in Part 2. Any involvement in future games would be so forced and unnecessary.

i think that the point of the second game was at the end they had mutual respect for each other as ellie let abby and lev go so i think the idea of abby coming back to capture her is unlikely

ok, how about everything you proposed *but* with one exception: When Ellie goes to the Fireflies, fully willing to sacrifice her life for a possible cure, it turns out all this doctor needs is blood and spinal fluid. A non-lethal procedure is all that is required of her. That way, Joel was - kind of - right in the end for the decision he made. It was wrong in the moment and doesn't change the selfish nature of his decision, but through luck, it led to a situation where there can be a cure and Ellie gets to live. The ending would leave it up to the player if a cure is actually even possible, but there is *hope*.

I do like that idea! But also knowing The Last of Us, blood will need to be shed somehow lol
