I was at the Tracy, CA rest area parked next to a driver parked facing the wrong way at 0300 hrs, he tries to back up and get turned the right way to leave and can't do it. I asked him if he needed help and he was so happy! I told him I'm not a teacher: so I can't tell you how to do it...but, if you want I will do it for you and he hopped into the passenger seat and I got him turned around. I remember what it was like to be a noob and was glad to help him! My friend said I was that guy's hero, I'm no hero: just willing to help if it's needed.
+Adam Katt I did! He drove behind all the trucks and missed the one space so he went to exit and instead of exiting made the left to come back into the rest area right into that spot! Now as wrong as this is, it would have been no problem if he was good at backing: He'll learn...if he sticks with driving!
How was he gonna help him the driver knew exactly what he was doing he tried getting in with the tandems back because thats how shippers prefer them for the safety of their forklift drivers but he decided he needed to slide them to get into the dock. He didn’t need nobody’s help.
Humanity's nature, laugh at, criticize, some find it easier to use rearward move of the tandems so to guide the trailer by looking at the tires path, it works for some people, at the end of the day, getting the trailer in the spot is all.
No the reason you slide your tandems is for weight distribution. Yes it may help with tighter turns but the only reason we have sliding tandems is to control the weight on the axles.
I agree... when your scaling out with your load to be legal. HOWEVER, sliding tandems (especially on these newer trailers that have better slider mechanisms) is a great option to make the tight bend into a dock that was built in 1950-something when trailer were 40' long or less. once you get the trailer straight and lined up for the dock, then you can slide them all the way to the back if you want. I've done this many times in my 30+ years.
When a lot of the drops were built, they didn't have 53's or some of them even 48's. They were built to handle old 42's or even 36's Real shits to get into. This guy did an OK job.
+Jacob Lasader I totaally agree I remember being a new driver, lots of time being watched having a problem by other drives giggling when just a bit of help would have made things easier!
the professional driver was the one that got out to help him out. I'll be nice enough not to leave a comment on what I think is the person behind the camera other than to say he's not the professional driver.
I’ve always put my tandems as far forward as possible to get into the door. Once I’m lined up in the door, I then slide the tandems to the rear and back into the door
everyone thinks there the best weather he's still learning or not he still got it in there with out hitting anything. not every spot is gonna be easy. nothing but a bunch of ass holes out there. the guy should of helped instead of filming. how long did it take u?
big big bigggg issue today, not lots of people are willing to help others, im just starting out on this business and I have gotten help so far twice. some pople just fotrget how it was for them when they started, and they have no idea how much we appreciate the help, just today I could not back into a spot here in orlano fl at the pepsi cola plant, there are so many pallets stacked up at front that it made it so much harder for me, I didnt want to waste more time and I just told the jockey guy if he could please park it for me, I have only been doing this for a month and still need all the help I can get, so he did... I appreciated it so much... its hard man, this is not an easy job, people think it is but its not, parking this things in especially tight spaces is a daunting task... you recording the video should've stepped down your truck and helpedhim
The only problem I see with this video is the person behind his phone video taping this guy.. This is the problem with this "new Generation" truck drivers nobody want to help!
Brian Kelly unfortunately you are right but there were some good fellas who helped me when I was new and now I do my best to look out for other drivers.
This is the problem with drivers today,We rather video tape others in need instead of helping. Some of us will watch another driver back into somethingand not even blow your horn or try using our radio.WE AS DRIVERS NEED TO DO BETTER.(BE SAFE)
You are told to slide tandems before docking. Slide them to make entrance guard happy. Slide forward to hit dock. Straighten it out, slide them back again.
Yeah been to a few places like that. These "scum" security guards only sit there and play on the phone and earn their minimum wage they have no idea what kind of challenges we have to deal with! These people are naturally too pussy to drive an 18 wheeler that's why they are paid Receptionist/baby sitters for a living! They're parents must be proud!
its good to see there is still a driver out there that will get out of his truck and help guide someone into a hole while you just sit there and record any possible damage for the following insurance claim. that's the problem with today's drivers. I wonder what the odds are that you don't even have a cb radio? Just a hunch
tights spots ill have the tandems back to avoid tail swing, get the tires where I want them then slide tandems forward to get more room in front. sliding the fifth wheel too if its needed. I've been doing it that way for years
Yea, it's true, but some stupid companies make you slide your tandems at the GATE!!! Ft. Worth Kraft Foods, which is actually in Haslet makes you slide at the gate, as well as Americold in Ft. Worth.... another reason to slide your tandems is after you are loaded because a heavy load can actually collapse your trailer in the middle if you don't slide your tandems up!!!!
hell if I was backing that semi. I would probably take out light pole .and.that damn Jersey wall that's in the way. make it easier on next semi... lol... that don't look easy..
He totally had it with the tandems to the rear. Don't know why he didn't persist. That said, I do most of my driving in Cali, so I'm used to backing with the tandems forward. Unless I'm really not meshing with the dock when a forklift drives in, I just leave them forward all day.
My buddy just got a trailer with steering back wheels, it is the coolest thing I have ever seen. He can make a complete right turn from the curb into the right lane, it is flipping awesome. He can set the steering to be automatic or he can override an manually steer. Going up thoes squiggly roads in West Virginia are no problem for this thing.
Ive seen some trailers with it. The steering system in the trailer is not driven by the steering wheel lol. Its like a pulley system with a cable rope, its on the fifth wheel or back axles. There are some videos of them in yt here.
+cebuanoguy His trailer works by having a sensor on the trailer pen, its a arm that rotates around the pen and reads segments on the pen. That results in a voltage signal back to the steering mechanism on the rear tandem. His steering system defaults to locked at zero degrees, and zeros automatically at over 15 mph, there is also a manual override on the shifter that allows him to steer left or right with a toggle switch. On a right turn he is able to complete the right turn from curb to curb without a button hook, it is the strangest damn thing to steer.
PSA To All Truckers: No you're not obligated to help another driver but pulling your phone out and recording a fellow truck driver struggling speaks volumes about your character and makes you a complete lame.
I'm a driver as well...holy shit...lets show our incredible intelligence and analyze the fuck out of sliding tandems. wtf?! I can't believe i wasted my time.
I grew up in the cab of a truck and on the deck of a spread axle covered wagon my father was a owner operator my brother was a owner operator they hauled Steel coils they have both passed away I became a owner operator and I have nobody teaching me these box trailers well van trailers and there sliding tandems I know what I grew up around I know flatbeds and steel coils but because I’m under two years on my cdl I can’t get those loads I have to take box trailers and they are different. I can chain and tarp as good as a 20 year flatbed driver but I’m learning the box trailers and anytime someone say hey you can make turns easier or you can move them to scale your load so it does piss me off to see someone struggle and other people just watching
I've been in lots of places like this almost always with tridems, some of which don't even have the option of sliding bogeys. On the rare occasion I have the freedom of a tandem, I never seem to need to slide my bogeys to get into a tight spot
You are correct especially with all these blood money thirsty people and lawyers with frivolous law suits nowadays, they'll find you some how liable for assisting.
ive been backing trailers up for years now, course not a 53' but the largest being 45' gooseneck...seeing this shit frightens me as i do want to get my cdl..
Almost every dock warehouse is gonna want your tandems slid to the rear for forklift driver mobility, could have helped him like the guy toward the end of the video.
It's crazy how little room some businesses have for trailer backing and unloading. It surprised me how small the area is at our local WM. Not to mention the narrow drive in and out of the place.
Trailer is still just as long, slid forward or back. I have been driving a truck since 1980 and find it easier for me, in tight situations to have tandems at rear when backing.

Tail swing is something I've gotten very used to and having the tandems slid forward helps to get into really tight spots.. gives more room in the front of the tractor which is where the problems can come in.. not enough space to get back in front of the trailer

Now as wrong as this is, it would have been no problem if he was good at backing: He'll learn...if he sticks with driving!
We know he should have gone to the next exit but i think those exits out there are near 10 miles apart which sucks..
+Adam Katt yeah not too many exits close together through there.
that was very nice of you!!!!
Crazy instead of helping I'll film it. Crazy thanks driver.

@@RR-qf9re That driver didn't know what he was doing because your supposed to get straight with the dock then slide your tandems.
But instead helping one person . he is helping thousands people by watching the video and learn

Leave ur tandems forward untill ur straight in the hole then slide em back! Great job driver! Even without the help of the camera man!
Typical of drivers today. They would rather sit around and film difficulty rather than get out and help.
I agree.. If your Mr. Know everything , maybe get out and help the noob.
I agree with you
+Jacob Lasader I totaally agree I remember being a new driver, lots of time being watched having a problem by other drives giggling when just a bit of help would have made things easier!
That's life in genral!
I agree.
give that driver props, not many could back that trailer in that spot
the professional driver was the one that got out to help him out. I'll be nice enough not to leave a comment on what I think is the person behind the camera other than to say he's not the professional driver.
Who shot the video when you took an hour to back in to your assigned dock? I want to watch that .
I’ve always put my tandems as far forward as possible to get into the door. Once I’m lined up in the door, I then slide the tandems to the rear and back into the door
Another hole to back into. Maybe we as fellow drivers should get out and help guide others into these tight spots. I know I would appreciate it!
how about you put the camera down and help the driver ..hmm
Yea that's right sitting in the Trk like. Fat potato videoing
he's not blind sided. why would he need help
because one should have the smarts and skills to do his job correctly or not do it all
Ok . I bet you think you have the smarts and kills to do your job and you still fuck up at times. You think you should stop?. It is call human.
some fucking people

100% agreed
To the driver posting the video. GET OFF YOUR ASS AND HELP
Mike Eddington same thing I'm thinking help.
Mike Eddington he could of left the camera running and go help, what a douchebag.
Never knew those trailer tires adjusted like that!
Pretty cool! I just learned something new! Thanks!!
Me either!! I had to double take to make sure I was seeing it right or if it was a camera effect lol
get the trailer turned with the tandems forward. slide them when youre straight in the hole

had to slide my tandems to fit in a spot at loves in Tumwater. it helps big time.

I always help if I can we all out here together remember. if one driver look bad we all do and for the one recording hows your backing skills
tandems had nothing to do with it. he took a bad angle and was off on compensation. period.

I'm a driver as well...holy shit...lets show our incredible intelligence and analyze the fuck out of sliding tandems. wtf?! I can't believe i wasted my time.
I always side my tandems rear of trailer, I had no problem even small truck stops. My Truck was a 379 Pete
I actually learned something thanks for the content
You're not a good guy man. You should've help your fellow trucker instead of making light of his struggle.
That driver was a boss! Great job!

This is in Franklin park, Chicago's West side. I'm new to driving so I asked someone to spot me and they did. Everybody started out the same.
If the company want me to slide my tandems I get it in the hole first and then I slide them.
I've been in lots of places like this almost always with tridems, some of which don't even have the option of sliding bogeys. On the rare occasion I have the freedom of a tandem, I never seem to need to slide my bogeys to get into a tight spot

i drive a rear split axle honestly i feel more comfortable backing up with wheels to the back vs forward turning is another story tho

pull pinon tandems use trolley valve to lock wheels slide trailer in once in line, release trolley valve, lock tandems and finish docking
Seems like this is a popular spot for difficult backing. There are many videos at this place.
It is!
+Moon2s “mun2s” you have to consider a swinging door on the blind side and when your in the truck, sometimes we all feel unnecessary pressure
As long as you get there withouth damaging the trailer or other vehicles it's a job well done .

If you know that he or she is going to mess up. Why don't you get out an assist. Instead of waiting you're time. Lest help each other.
spread axle flatbed driver....a dump valve for your back axle is a huge plus if you are able to install one. fairly simple
If you slide the tanderm all the way back it will be much harder to back because trailer will not turn easy
Trailer is still just as long, slid forward or back. I have been driving a truck since 1980 and find it easier for me, in tight situations to have tandems at rear when backing.
Same here. At least I know where the rear of the trailer is and you don't have to worry about that extra swing in the back.
Im a rookie gents but i think the angle changes when tandems are moved...and it comes in handy when space is limited... just my two cents..God bless everyone out there
Tail swing is something I've gotten very used to and having the tandems slid forward helps to get into really tight spots.. gives more room in the front of the tractor which is where the problems can come in.. not enough space to get back in front of the trailer
awe heck. I did that last week, blindfolded. rofl! ! Good work dricer.
I started off in an old 5x3 Browning with no a/c or power steering. Top that. And the boss just threw me in and told me to "Figure it out" And I did.
I been here u have slide ur tandems in most warehouse in Chicago
i just started trucking and drivers who film make me not wanna continue
Wow.
Your complaint should have been brought up to the driver's attention. Right?

Good thing he had a short wheelbase truck!
It's all about the approach .

a 90 would have nailed that shit.

I miss my old cabover.
It's either the guy's lazy or the tandoms won't unlock. Been there, done that.
There’s nothing easy about Chicago trucking
instead of talking shit why didn't you get out and help him, this drivers only have a few years on the road now they're super truckers

This is what it takes...time and patience to do your job

yep most cities were designed during horse and buggy times who knew we would have big trucks now lol
You're right, the industry should never have gone to a 53' trailer. Shippers and brokers make more money, drivers do more work.
