I was probably 26 when I took my little brothers-in-law to see this movie and I was thoroughly unprepared for this moment. It’s a shame how infrequently true and forgiving love is demonstrated in media
That’s one off the great things about the HTTYD franchise in general. It makes you feel things. I’ve never been as disgusted/ squeamish from watching a movie as that scene in the first movie made me (the one where toothless regurgitated half the fish, which hiccup proceeded to eat.)
The thing I love most about Astrid is that once Hiccup finally won her over, she gave him full, unwavering support and loyalty. She would challenge him, but only to help him make sure he was making the best possible choices. Every man wants a wpman like that, with that kind of support.
I always love the fact that at the end hiccup adds the sheep to Astrid's score not his, and no one really realizes it. Nice touch they added about the relationship.
9:59 It's a very small detail but I still love it. When we first see Hiccup he has cute little braids and come to find out Astrid makes them meaning Hiccup decided to be an adorable boyfriend and keep Astrid's creation.
This movie is the one that elevates the trilogy to legendary, I think. The fact that the first has the heart of “sometimes the young people have new ideas the older ones need”, and followed it with “sometimes youthful naïveté isn’t enough and your elders have real life and death wisdom” is beautiful. If Hiccup had used his golden heart to win the day, it would have been good. But he has to embody the virtues of his father, not just his mother, and face a man who will not be persuaded with kindness - and that’s awesome.
Gods, these movies have me bawling my eyes out every damn time! The scene with Stoic and Val! Stoic saying nothing, Val panicking, and then "you're as beautiful as the day I lost you." *starts ugly crying again
What was crazy for a good amount of viewers, was those who watched the nick then netflix series, (riders of berk, defenders of berk, and race to the edge), which bridged the 5 year gap between the first and second movie. Spending so much more time with stoick, and seeing his and hiccups relationship over that long period of time, made seeing his death, let alone at the hands of toothless, was Gut-wrenching!

I feel your pain. I lost my Father 31 years ago (I found my Father dead in his bed from a heart attack in his sleep when I was 21 and he was 45) ... and I've been dead inside ever since ... but *the only* thing that gets an emotional reaction out of me is a reunion between a Parent and a Child!
A lot of people seem to misremember Stoick's motivation in the first movie. He's a dragon-killer, sure, but his main goal was never to slay all the dragons. He specifically says in the first movie, multiple times, that he wants to destroy the dragon nest to drive them away. He just wants the 300 year-long war between the vikings and the dragons to end, and sees the dragons as the enemy he needs to defend himself against. There's animosity there, sure, but he's not out to eradicate them all, just drive them away so they'll be forced to find a new feeding ground away from Berk. For the second movie, I love how at first it shows you how much Hiccup is like his mom, leading you to think that he gets everything from her, but then after Stoick's death Hiccup gives that little speech, showing how much he looks up to and reveres his dad: "I was so afraid of becoming my dad, mostly because I thought I never could. How do you become someone that great, that... brave, that... selfless? I guess... you can only try." And you realize how much Hiccup takes after Stoick as well, because he values the same things Stoick valued, and has all those same qualities too, just in a different way to his dad. When he repeats his father's saying of "A chief protects his own" that's basically Hiccup coming to terms with who he is, and that he needs to follow in his dad's footsteps. In a way it mirrors how Hiccup repeated "We're vikings, it's an occupational hazard" back to Stoick in the first movie. Hiccup wasn't even at the town meeting to hear Stoick say it, so it's clear that it's a mantra his dad used pretty often. Him saying it to Stoick before flying off to fight the Red Death at the end of the first movie really solidified to Stoick that Hiccup understood what it meant to be a viking; To put ones life on the line to protect the community.
Ive never seen someone cry about hiccup meeting his mother before and honestly It makes me enjoy your reaction even more, its just true emotion over a franchise that deserves every tear and laugh. also in the final scene, hiccup throws the black sheep into Astrids basket giving her the victory, its a detail many dont notice because its so minor but I really like it regardless
I didn't go into this movie expecting it to be better than the first but I was wrong, it was amazing. Blew me away. Last time a movie in the same genre made me feel this way was probably The Lion King. It's refreshing when movies targeted at general audiences, and especially animated ones, don't shy away from death and grief.

A side note I LOVE and absolutely missed first time was when Toothless is shooting fireballs at Hiccup while hes gliding, its to help him maintain altitude... since heat rises...you even see him glide up some 😭 In retrospect it's obvious but i didnt notice it until my 3rd watch😅
I used to fly gliders and “thermaling” is when a pilot just circles in a spot of warm air to gain altitude (birds do the same thing), so that bit had me yelling and pointing at the TV lol.
This is one of the few movies where the sequel is better than the original. The whole series is one of the best animated movie trilogies and movie trilogies in general of all time.
One of the best trilogies out there. So many fall flat after the first movie, or seem to lose their way. HTTYD is a true trilogy, a full story beginning to end. Can't wait for your reaction to the third one.
The best part is that it's not a single story in the traditional way something like Star Wars is. The story is Hiccup growing up, each movie covering a different phase of his life through adulthood.
This movie has such a special place in my heart, not only because of its great story and memorable moments, but also because this is the first proper movie I ever saw in cinema - I grew up incredibly poor, so I never really had those childish luxuries, but then one day an organization arranged for other refugee kids and me to see this movie on its premiere day - I have cherished that day and this movie ever since! Scandinavian music actually shares a lot in common with Celtic music, including similar instrumentation and chord structures. Makes sense cause the northern parts of Britain and the Norse have had a history of raiding and trading with each other for a very long time.
There is a fun interview with Kit Harington and toothless 😂 what I love most about these is that Hiccup and Toothless are at similar stages of life. As his mother says, they are both teenagers. This film they both become leaders. Plus, of course, the music, and the relationships. Astrid and Hiccup are one of my favourite pairings.
I got to see this movie in a test screening while it was still in production. Some scenes were complete, some were animatics, and a couple were still just storyboards, and a few parts of the score were placeholders mostly from the first film. It was a really fascinating experience because while I've been to test screenings before (including ones, like Chappie, with unfinished motion capture effects where the actor was fully visible) I've never seen an animated film at that stage of production.
It's not often a movie can make you that sad and proud at the end. This was such an unexpected surprise sequel that was as good as the first film. Speaking of romantic marriage music, I highly recommend checking out the cover of "For the Dancing and the Dreaming", the wedding song in this movie, done by Peter Hollens and his wife Evynne. Both have their own youtube channels and make for great music individually with Peter doing acapella and Evynne doing the actual music. Their cover of this song is especially heartfelt since it's a married couple basically exchanging marriage vows via song again.
Still amazing, even on this abridged rewatch. These are such moving films, full of earnest and unhindered emotion. They are the very definition of heartfelt, and I consider myself lucky to have been alive when these works of visual storytelling art were made. An amazing trilogy which holds up against any of the big name trilogies.
Let's preach some good words for "Race to the Edge"! It's really great and gives so much more time to know the characters. Though I really love the trilogy, I kinda upset by the way they handled my dragon riders in the 3 movie...
You're such a good movie buddy, I'm a cryer so I was bawling right along with you even though I've seen it a gazillion times 😭 This one in particular speaks to me very deeply, I'd say it's my favorite of the three. As someone who works in animation it never fails to blow my mind seeing the quality and polish of the facial expressions on the characters, and their movements. Not to mention how well the action reads and the cinematography overall. Just a work of art.
Speaking of "bawling even though you've seen something a gazillion times": Despite myself suddenly becoming a tearjerker-seeker (after witnessing first hand the feel-good brain endorphins that often coming along with tears when I saw the movie "Inside Out"), it was then difficult to find any other movie that would make me cry, and for a while it was impossible to find one that would make me cry upon a RE-watch. To date, the ONLY movie that's been able to make me cry upon re-watches (including reactions and even reading/writing comments) is... Nimona (15 times in fact; knowing myself and how rare it is for me at all, I was flabbergasted!)

it couldn't possibly matter less, but it'll bug me if I don't say anything: the word is "wringer". 'sfrom back in the day when they did laundry by hand - a wringer was basically two gears that you fed wet clothes through to wring out as much water as possible so they'd dry faster. hand crank and everything. it was pretty rough on 'em (as you can imagine), thus sparking the idiom :)
I've seen this movie I don't know how many times and I still can't make it through it without both laughing and crying. And us middle aged midwesterners aren't known for showing a lot of emotions ;) Looking forward to your reaction to the 3rd movie.
I always took Hiccup's eulogy for Stoick as some sense of unworthiness. From what I know, everything Stoick did was either for his son (not perfectly, but tried) or his tribe. Every battle, every blizzard, every trial, the tribe had to endure, Stoick was the first one up and making sure everyone got through it. Now Stoick anointing Hiccup as his heir, as much as that shows Stoick's faith in his son, I can see Hiccup being legitimately afraid of that responsibility.
There are shows in the franchise too, they're actually amazing!!!!! And they actually end the whole story beautifully! Trust me they're so worth the watch! It wont be a understatement to say that they maintain the beauty and the lore of these films!
This was ssososososo good I haven't seen this masterpiece for so long. This movie has everything, joy, friendship, family, lost , fights, and unique Dragons. I would love this movie forever
Fun fact, a lot of the logistical stuff you were talking about in the opening actually is addressed in the tv series that takes place between the first and second movies (there are actually two different shows, Dragons: Riders of Berk and Race to the Edge, for a total of 8 seasons of additional content that's on par with the movies, highly recomend watching them if you enjoy the movies, even if it's on your own). There are also a number of shorts for the fanchise as well, and one of them (Gift of the Night Fury) actually directly addresses your comments about Toothless and Hiccup's situation where Toothless can't fly without him.

Fun fact I recently learned, because my wife got me a “book of dragons” that was based in the original book series. In that, all vikings trained dragons prior to Hiccup. What set Hiccup apart was apparently *how* he did it: by learning their language and treating them as friends. Drago represents how the other vikings would train: yelling really loudly and exerting dominance.

I've been waiting for this one...for obvious reasons. I remember watching this in the theaters, and a father had brought his young son. The dad started crying during that Stoic death scene, and the young son was asking him what was wrong, not recognizing the moment and why it mattered. Heck, my face was also tear-soaked, but the son asking that quesiton was still kind of funny, lol.
Back again the coolest thing about the first one when opening scene with the Universal logo you can see Toothless in the background going to Berk and in this one the opening of the water that was Hiccup flying off

I just wanted to say that besides the trilogy of movies there are two TV series that happened between the 1st and 2nd movie in which VERY much growth happened. The first is "Dragons: Riders of Berk" that starts shortly after the first movie and the second one is "Dragons: Race to the Edge" that happens I think 3 years before the second movie. (little spoiler: a certain character makes a chameo and a bit foreshadowing happens at the end of the very series)
"The alpha, Val and Stoic better not die" Me: oh boy, two of those are gonna happen .... que the crying Really enjoyed watching it with you, the second one is my personal favorite of these three amazing movies. I really love how the characters grow and mature

I briefly got the chance to Composer John Powell and had the opportunity to tell him how much i personally loved his score for the Dragons films, im really hoping that we get the chance to see him continue the score in the live action films that the director Dean DeBlois of the dragons animated films will also be doing in the near future. This film too was even more powerful than the first film for me. so glad you enjoyed the 2nd film as well. Stoic's death was so well played out his life gave purpose and the arc of the story was just so wonderful. this is one of my most favorite films of animation ever (next to the spiderverse films) these films mean everything to me though, glad to see they have effected you the same way they effected me. the 3rd is a decent conclusion but not as strong as 1 or 2, look forward to your reaction though ion the 3rd film.
I love the idea that Drago is a reflection of Stoick if he'd let his anger at Valka's death fester. Also, Valka unlocked an ability in Toothless that would have improved their final fight in the first film...hiccup may not have lost his leg
Great reaction and so heartfelt! So glad you're so in touch with this series. Their effort building in character for everyone really pays off on their growth and change. I always have so much anxiety about the chaotic nature of the alpha's green ice blast. It's feels so much more intense than fire which is quite an achievement for the design team.
You'd really enjoy the series - Riders of Berk, Defenders of Berk and Race to the Edge - as well as shorts like Gift of the Night Fury, Legend of the Boneknapper and Homecoming.
Usually with a series of movies the sequels get progressively worse, this is one of the few exceptions where they consistently put out great movies to the end. I love Toothless and all the other characters.
That's one of the things that I love about animated movies these days. There are people taking them so seriously that they don't need the qualifier of being "animated" when talking about how good they are. So many animated works now are just straight-up great works that stand up to... if not surpass a lot of the more mainstream live-action movies. This one really is one heck of an emotional roller-coaster, and one of the downsides of watching your reactions is that... I'm seeing it, and I've started learning how you will react to various things, and... I know what's about to happen with a kind of grim certainty. I know it is going to hit you like a ton of bricks, the way it did for me. Still, that's... kind of the weight of the story, which is just a masterpiece. Now, unrelated to DreamWorks, having just finished watching your Firefly watchthroughs, I really want to STRONGLY recommend the anime Cowboy Bebop. It is also a grittier space western, following the crew of the ship, The Bebop, and their experiences as bounty hunters around Sol system. The story and music are amazing, and the animation just... feels right for it. I do suggest watching it dubbed because the English cast is... basically just right for the crew. It's only got one season and a movie, but at least the season is 26 episodes.
I know Stoick made some mistakes in the past you may not have been proud of but he love his family so much and he love in his heart for dragon's after all, even for Toothless.
I love that they didn’t gloss over Stoics death they gave him a full funeral and show how this, even though horrible, move hiccup and the movie in a real direction. It wasn’t just something to add drama. Also I have heard that the writer stayed at Skywalker ranch to write this. He and Mr Lucas and Mr Spielberg had chats about the movie. So there is an empire strikes back sort of connection.
On the topic of Toothless being unable to fly withou Hiccup - there is a Christmas special movie set between the 1st and 2nd movies that addresses this and it makes me bawl my eyes out. It's called Gift of the night fury, it's about 20 minutes long and I'm sure you would like it!

The How to Train Your Dragon trilogy is one of the rare movies series where each one gets getter

This is one of the few movies where the sequel is better than the original. The whole series is one of the best animated movie trilogies and movie trilogies in general of all time.

One of the best trilogies out there. So many fall flat after the first movie, or seem to lose their way. HTTYD is a true trilogy, a full story beginning to end. Can't wait for your reaction to the third one.
The best part is that it's not a single story in the traditional way something like Star Wars is. The story is Hiccup growing up, each movie covering a different phase of his life through adulthood.
This movie has such a special place in my heart, not only because of its great story and memorable moments, but also because this is the first proper movie I ever saw in cinema - I grew up incredibly poor, so I never really had those childish luxuries, but then one day an organization arranged for other refugee kids and me to see this movie on its premiere day - I have cherished that day and this movie ever since!

Scandinavian music actually shares a lot in common with Celtic music, including similar instrumentation and chord structures. Makes sense cause the northern parts of Britain and the Norse have had a history of raiding and trading with each other for a very long time.
There is a fun interview with Kit Harington and toothless 😂 what I love most about these is that Hiccup and Toothless are at similar stages of life. As his mother says, they are both teenagers. This film they both become leaders. Plus, of course, the music, and the relationships. Astrid and Hiccup are one of my favourite pairings.
I got to see this movie in a test screening while it was still in production. Some scenes were complete, some were animatics, and a couple were still just storyboards, and a few parts of the score were placeholders mostly from the first film. It was a really fascinating experience because while I've been to test screenings before (including ones, like Chappie, with unfinished motion capture effects where the actor was fully visible) I've never seen an animated film at that stage of production.
It's not often a movie can make you that sad and proud at the end. This was such an unexpected surprise sequel that was as good as the first film. Speaking of romantic marriage music, I highly recommend checking out the cover of "For the Dancing and the Dreaming", the wedding song in this movie, done by Peter Hollens and his wife Evynne. Both have their own youtube channels and make for great music individually with Peter doing acapella and Evynne doing the actual music. Their cover of this song is especially heartfelt since it's a married couple basically exchanging marriage vows via song again.
Still amazing, even on this abridged rewatch. These are such moving films, full of earnest and unhindered emotion.
They are the very definition of heartfelt, and I consider myself lucky to have been alive when these works of visual storytelling art were made.
An amazing trilogy which holds up against any of the big name trilogies.
Let's preach some good words for "Race to the Edge"! It's really great and gives so much more time to know the characters. Though I really love the trilogy, I kinda upset by the way they handled my dragon riders in the 3 movie...

You're such a good movie buddy, I'm a cryer so I was bawling right along with you even though I've seen it a gazillion times 😭 This one in particular speaks to me very deeply, I'd say it's my favorite of the three.
As someone who works in animation it never fails to blow my mind seeing the quality and polish of the facial expressions on the characters, and their movements. Not to mention how well the action reads and the cinematography overall. Just a work of art.
Speaking of "bawling even though you've seen something a gazillion times": Despite myself suddenly becoming a tearjerker-seeker (after witnessing first hand the feel-good brain endorphins that often coming along with tears when I saw the movie "Inside Out"), it was then difficult to find any other movie that would make me cry, and for a while it was impossible to find one that would make me cry upon a RE-watch. To date, the ONLY movie that's been able to make me cry upon re-watches (including reactions and even reading/writing comments) is... Nimona (15 times in fact; knowing myself and how rare it is for me at all, I was flabbergasted!)

it couldn't possibly matter less, but it'll bug me if I don't say anything: the word is "wringer". 'sfrom back in the day when they did laundry by hand - a wringer was basically two gears that you fed wet clothes through to wring out as much water as possible so they'd dry faster. hand crank and everything. it was pretty rough on 'em (as you can imagine), thus sparking the idiom :)

I loved the OG movie, it took me years after 2 was released to finally watch it, but when I did I kept rewatching it. It's so damn good
I've seen this movie I don't know how many times and I still can't make it through it without both laughing and crying. And us middle aged midwesterners aren't known for showing a lot of emotions ;) Looking forward to your reaction to the 3rd movie.
I always took Hiccup's eulogy for Stoick as some sense of unworthiness. From what I know, everything Stoick did was either for his son (not perfectly, but tried) or his tribe. Every battle, every blizzard, every trial, the tribe had to endure, Stoick was the first one up and making sure everyone got through it. Now Stoick anointing Hiccup as his heir, as much as that shows Stoick's faith in his son, I can see Hiccup being legitimately afraid of that responsibility.
There are shows in the franchise too, they're actually amazing!!!!! And they actually end the whole story beautifully! Trust me they're so worth the watch! It wont be a understatement to say that they maintain the beauty and the lore of these films!

Fun fact, a lot of the logistical stuff you were talking about in the opening actually is addressed in the tv series that takes place between the first and second movies (there are actually two different shows, Dragons: Riders of Berk and Race to the Edge, for a total of 8 seasons of additional content that's on par with the movies, highly recomend watching them if you enjoy the movies, even if it's on your own).
There are also a number of shorts for the fanchise as well, and one of them (Gift of the Night Fury) actually directly addresses your comments about Toothless and Hiccup's situation where Toothless can't fly without him.

Fun fact I recently learned, because my wife got me a “book of dragons” that was based in the original book series. In that, all vikings trained dragons prior to Hiccup. What set Hiccup apart was apparently *how* he did it: by learning their language and treating them as friends.
Drago represents how the other vikings would train: yelling really loudly and exerting dominance.

Agreed although I do admire any reactor's ability to cry-- if I am watching a new movie that I might think make me cry, if I even think someone is going to walk in, I physically can't cry... so I wait until I have the house to myself if I want to try for a good cry, LOL

First time I'm noticing that Toothless firing the blasts at Hiccup is to create heat drafts so Hiccup can stay gliding in the air.
I've been waiting for this one...for obvious reasons. I remember watching this in the theaters, and a father had brought his young son. The dad started crying during that Stoic death scene, and the young son was asking him what was wrong, not recognizing the moment and why it mattered. Heck, my face was also tear-soaked, but the son asking that quesiton was still kind of funny, lol.
Back again the coolest thing about the first one when opening scene with the Universal logo you can see Toothless in the background going to Berk and in this one the opening of the water that was Hiccup flying off
I love this movie more then the first one stoic's line to his wife " you're as beautiful as the day I lost you" makes me tear up every time I hate that he died but it was Necessaryfor the plot I love you reaction and you don't need make up in my opinion

The first scene with Hiccup and Toothless in this movie is one of my favourite scenes of all time. 🥰 the music, the flight suit, the animation. Just sooooo good. Looking forward to you watching the third one!

I just wanted to say that besides the trilogy of movies there are two TV series that happened between the 1st and 2nd movie in which VERY much growth happened. The first is "Dragons: Riders of Berk" that starts shortly after the first movie and the second one is "Dragons: Race to the Edge" that happens I think 3 years before the second movie. (little spoiler: a certain character makes a chameo and a bit foreshadowing happens at the end of the very series)

I briefly got the chance to Composer John Powell and had the opportunity to tell him how much i personally loved his score for the Dragons films, im really hoping that we get the chance to see him continue the score in the live action films that the director Dean DeBlois of the dragons animated films will also be doing in the near future. This film too was even more powerful than the first film for me. so glad you enjoyed the 2nd film as well. Stoic's death was so well played out his life gave purpose and the arc of the story was just so wonderful. this is one of my most favorite films of animation ever (next to the spiderverse films) these films mean everything to me though, glad to see they have effected you the same way they effected me. the 3rd is a decent conclusion but not as strong as 1 or 2, look forward to your reaction though ion the 3rd film.
I love the idea that Drago is a reflection of Stoick if he'd let his anger at Valka's death fester. Also, Valka unlocked an ability in Toothless that would have improved their final fight in the first film...hiccup may not have lost his leg

I always have so much anxiety about the chaotic nature of the alpha's green ice blast. It's feels so much more intense than fire which is quite an achievement for the design team.

You'd really enjoy the series - Riders of Berk, Defenders of Berk and Race to the Edge - as well as shorts like Gift of the Night Fury, Legend of the Boneknapper and Homecoming.

Think that was the first time my wife saw me cry during a movie. They were just reunited.
I just knew she was gonna cry watching this movie. We all did.
Usually with a series of movies the sequels get progressively worse, this is one of the few exceptions where they consistently put out great movies to the end. I love Toothless and all the other characters.
That's one of the things that I love about animated movies these days. There are people taking them so seriously that they don't need the qualifier of being "animated" when talking about how good they are. So many animated works now are just straight-up great works that stand up to... if not surpass a lot of the more mainstream live-action movies.
This one really is one heck of an emotional roller-coaster, and one of the downsides of watching your reactions is that... I'm seeing it, and I've started learning how you will react to various things, and... I know what's about to happen with a kind of grim certainty. I know it is going to hit you like a ton of bricks, the way it did for me. Still, that's... kind of the weight of the story, which is just a masterpiece.
Now, unrelated to DreamWorks, having just finished watching your Firefly watchthroughs, I really want to STRONGLY recommend the anime Cowboy Bebop. It is also a grittier space western, following the crew of the ship, The Bebop, and their experiences as bounty hunters around Sol system. The story and music are amazing, and the animation just... feels right for it. I do suggest watching it dubbed because the English cast is... basically just right for the crew. It's only got one season and a movie, but at least the season is 26 episodes.
You should watch the series. Race to the Edge in particular explores Hiccup and Astrid's relationship
I know Stoick made some mistakes in the past you may not have been proud of but he love his family so much and he love in his heart for dragon's after all, even for Toothless.
I love that they didn’t gloss over Stoics death they gave him a full funeral and show how this, even though horrible, move hiccup and the movie in a real direction. It wasn’t just something to add drama.
Also I have heard that the writer stayed at Skywalker ranch to write this. He and Mr Lucas and Mr Spielberg had chats about the movie. So there is an empire strikes back sort of connection.

On the topic of Toothless being unable to fly withou Hiccup - there is a Christmas special movie set between the 1st and 2nd movies that addresses this and it makes me bawl my eyes out. It's called Gift of the night fury, it's about 20 minutes long and I'm sure you would like it!

I always like seeing you cry... I mean... no, that's what I mean. I love you're getting to see these things for the first time. Really wanna see how you react to 12 Angry Men though, no crying, but it is an amazing thought experiment.
