Haunting Mids
Ryan, yours is the truly the best demo of the JHS HARD DRIVE so far. Thoroughly explored as it should be...
agreed, this is the best yet.
Yes. I'm glad to hear how the dang thing actually sounds.
Also, Annie Clark called. She said to give me that guitar. Lol
Ryan, out of all the guitar CZcamsrs I sub to, you are my favorite non-metal guy to watch because you're not afraid to demo metal stuff anyway. In fact, you will often run metal-oriented stuff in ways that most of us don't, and come up with some really unique tones in the process.
My band Dirus plays psychedelic black metal, and with all the different pedals we used on our recent debut, there has to be at least one or two Ryan Burke tricks buried in there.
Keep it up with the killer videos, keep it weird, and keep it different!
INSPECTOR GADGET
OOOO OOOOOOOOOOO
As someone who's a big fan of both psychedelic and black metal, I was very intrigued, and I'm not disappointed
Been watching these demos all morning and this is easily the best one. Not surprising a surf master can get the riffs right
The only thing better than the name is that they released it in beige
Oh sweet memories of the original generic computer cover color ❤
JHS launches high-gain metal pedal.
Me: let me go right out and check all my favorite low gain guitar-tubers for a demo!
And Ola Englund doesn't even need to feature this on an episode of *Will it Chug?* because frankly, I already hear this pedal chugging.
@@dionr1168 But Ola should do it anyway ...
And then out came the Millions of Peaches Explorer and my ears were mashed into a fine cobbler.
Annie Clarke from St. Vincent blasts some nasty tones out on her St. V, so, this guitar is ready for it.
Ryan pulls out the guitar, pulls out the pedal, dials some random settings and instantly gets a fantastic sound. You've made this pedal sound awesome mate!
Thank you for showing that it's actually not a Metal Zone. Sweet review.
Love JHS but came away from this wanting Two Princetons
Hell even if I had one I’d be happy lol
Seems like its a versatile pedal, but still difficult to get bad sounds out of. Some people got it chugging, some got squishy stoner-sounds, some did bluesy/country lightgain-sounds, and you got epic shoegazer sounds. I might wait until someone tries to push it with an OD in front.... But sounds pretty killer thus far.
Kyle Bull boosted it with a Boss SD-1: czcams.com/video/k3ynAT5SWKs/video.htmlsi=97MN63vn8t3RyEiD
This was the heaviest out of all of the demos in my subscriptions. I liked it. :)
Tuning while the Two Princetons plays so we don't get Tun'r Time. BOOOO
Solid demo, especially when going over the mid controlls.
I'm not a high gain player. But, I agree with you that this pedal sounds great! Very usable tones that seem really easy to dial in.
Ryan, Your video here is the first that I've watched for this pedal. Awesome job and it sounds AMAZING! : ) The St. V with the gold foils sound GLORIOUS! Thank you for the awesome review!
Best demo of this pedal by far !! Keep it coming Ryan ! 🤘🏼❤️ I’m buying this pedal cause of this demo
Awesome video! I really want one of these, since I only have room for one distortion/overdrive and I love the sound and love the mid freq here, adds so much versatility to the EQ.
I had a Commodore SX64 back in the day
Dude, this is the best I've heard you play. Do this more, I'm begging you! 🤘
This would work for a lot of 90s rock. Veruca Salt tones. Weezer. That sort of thing.
You and the pedal are sounding great. This video was fun to watch and Thanks for the cool video sir.
Josh said the engineer worked on this pedal for eight years after Josh gave him a suggestion for a high gain pedal. Seems he really dialed it in quite well and it was time well-spent. Really nice demo; best one I've heard. I could watch metal guys demo it all day, but I'm not a metal player and this showed me a lot more of the versatility of this pedal. Shame it's $200, but pedals are getting expensive.
Yowza! Oh the feedback....glorious feedback! Great pedal and GREAT demo, sir!
Fantastic demo, super fun to watch you get creative with it thank you!!
Excellent demo here and playing...I like that Sterling St.Vincent too !
Hey Ryan, that pedal reminds me of an HM2 Boss pedal. Very gnarly and full of chuggy goodness. I watched a few demos of this pedal and it screams nothing but pure awesome tone. Thanks for the demo, get naked, get your chugs on Ryan, and keep it bluesy.
I’ve watched a couple of reviews of this pedal today and I just wasn’t feeling it. But I just watched your review and that thing smokes!! So much so I just bought it on Reverb. It’s kind of like Queens of the Stone Age and the Scorpions had a baby😂
For some reason I am yearning for a computer with a 5" green screen.
I always like to see what you do with high gain and this pedal sounds great
The tone you have at 13:30 with the delay sounds EXACTLY like the lead preset that I created on my little Digitech RP-80 multi-effect when I was younger! I specifically remember the amp model setting was S8 for a "British Stack" and I added analog delay. I also may have put some hall reverb on there. That pedal into a 100w fender frontman 212 sounded so powerful to me at 15...
You’re reminding me of my precious RP-50! Which I used to make grungy metal tones and clean delays until I pressed on of the switches clean through the plastic box and didn’t have the know-how at the ripe age of 16 to fix it.
Some sweet metal riffs. I just got the Friedman BE-OD and I do love it.
The Friedman is another league. It rips this jhs in pieces
I liked the vibes. Good stuff man.
Anything with the Osbourne O2 as it's graphics has to be real cheese...
Thank you.
I'm guessing with the mid frequency knob you can replicate the sounds of many other distortions and overdrives.
Mark Johnston is one CZcamsr that I see regularly playing a St Vincent Goldie. Been GASing hard for one of those for like a year now 😭
Not just any vintage computer that’s an Osborn one, notable for being the first transportable PC and for putting themselves out of business by pre announcing the Osborn two before stocks or Osborne ones were sold out. My brother had one for work, weighed a ton.
Great pedal, but I’m all multi effects units out ( gx700, ge200 and katana go) but I did just order an octave pedal a week ago! (you’re such a bad influence 🤪)
Good eye. I was thinking that it didn't quite look like my Compaq.
Love that grippy saturated tone with the delay at around 14:45, also some incredibly cool jamming thereafter. Fun yes, but also great that you tracked it. I love your high gain playing here, sounds musical, and not shitty, wanky, bs flash. I have been pretty underwhelmed by some of the ODs and Fuzz demos I have watched lately...maybe just badly gain staged but often fizzy and harsh. This sounds pretty phenomenal, and I still focus more on time based and modulation pedals, but this with the boosting and pretty bloody nice bunch of tone control options kind of seems like it has ended my search for my OCD, EHX little green muff, and maybe my Walrus Audio Voyager replacements, (Voyager has been my always on clean gain after compression pedal but with very limited tonal options). I suspect this JHS Distortion beast will be having a lot of players drooling for something like this. Sounds like JHS snuck a genuine masterpiece under your door. Screw the tonex one. Order cancelled. I don't need an untweakable on the fly IR emulation of the real thing, I need one OD that I can dial in my own tones my own way. Great demo❤️ JHS hit a Grand Slam with this. It sounds absolutely amazing...
Haha that riff on the peech it sounded like some Ministry... thats pretty metal..didn't see that coming. Nice one!
Love the St Vincent! Totally sold me before you played inspector G the first time lol!
Much more than a MZ. Lots of HG sounds. Watched 2 vids so far on this. Not my target sounds, but it covers a lot of ground, might be going on my wish list
That appears to be a very versatile pedal. I don't do high gain at all, but that could be useful just for low-gain stuff.
Compared to the Metal Zone this thing sound more amp like/natural, or as natural as a distortion pedal can sound.
Ryan wrote some ambient death metal.
I’m not a high gainer either but it sounded good, your playing with the ambient feedback was awesome!
So its a metalzone without the built-in 80 hertz boost and without the built-in mid boost. Got it.
No matter how much motivation or what drives you in life there is no pain no gain. Cool you got out of your comfort zone. It would be cool if you made a song for your band that was thrash influenced. A song that people would not ask for encores for.
Wow, this sounds amazing!
Best demo yet of this pedal... ;)
I hope to get one of those guitars someday.
Nothing screams high gain like "indie pop queen guitar"
Great playing and demo Ryan! I have to say, I’m not huge on this one. I really like the Marshall shredmaster+ the rat, which Josh compared it to, but something is missing. Maybe I need to play one for myself
EDIT: I tried one in the store and loved it so much I walked out with it. It sounds just like a shredmaster but with actual usable controls. Incredible.
It's not for me, but I had a lot of fun seeing you have fun, nice melodies by the way!
That dimed mid sweep sold me on the pedal. Raspy, nasty, and spitty high gain distortion rules. The more digital, the better. Love it.
Starting @ 17:48 Ryan summons Shai-Halud to fight the Saudakar...... Lisan Al-Gaib! I got some very doomy vibes from that segment. Somewhere in that there is is a doomy space rock song that could be a 10 minute instrumental track. I'd probably listen to it on repeat
is this the new guitar they sell on reddit. I only comment on the titles
go go gadget riff
I saw the email and didnt realize what harddrive implies until Ryan said it.
I love that this pedal inspired you to play Inspector Gadget
Sounds like a METAL FUZZ
Although a bit surprising that the podcast isn't dropping today, it's kind of good to know that I can leave the house without fear of missing out on the premier. I have 70 cookies to take over to my dad.
You had way too much fun with Josh’s new pedal. Your demo is the best and longest demo I’ve heard so far. Maybe Josh will let you keep the pedal. 👍😎👍🎸
Oh I’m keeping it (and the box)
@@60CycleHumcast 😂
My theory is that the cartoon model of Steve (apparently named by Cial) kinda looks like a cartoon Steve Rogers (Captain America)
Sounds awesome
It sounds thousand times better in this video than in the one from JHS 😂 👍🏻
What delay pedal were you using with it? Some cool tones!
now with just a hint of metal zone!
The xmen theme !!! You are the greatest.... and then you sabbath it alll hahha
I have an Elektron Analog Drive and I swear the distortions sound exactly the same. I'm curious if they have the same schematic.
We're gonna make a metalhead out of Ryan yet!
The gain is a bit low, mot as chuggy as I might normally use,
BUT it has some promise... I might have to slap a violent setting from an Attack/Decay pedal right after it, and maybe a noise gate,
but I think there is some potential in that silly little box.
AND, the graphic reminds me of a poduct that I was involved in, bitd early 1980's.
Now THAT box chugged... the first AED. It could really kick ya in the chest.
You're greatly debunk that it was not a BOSS MT-2 Metal Zone clone and it started to floating around right now. You're ahead of the time. ✊🏽
Well I have not been running much at all in the way of drive, ever, but I am awaiting delivery of a PRS DGT50, and some way I think that four EL-34s pushing a meagre fifty RMS is gonna be daring the Pedals to go ahead and try something... with the equipments goading each other like a pack of stray dogs or something, maybe I should keep my shotgun handy.
sounds like blackstar HT diode boosted distortion almost
Ryan bruce fluff used a les Paul although its not what you use but close enough
Does it come with a COVID Chip schematic?
It is old school sounding but it nails it!!! I play Metal but I borrow sounds from every decade. It keeps my tunes fresh and in a 3 piece band without keys the audience will O-D if it is one sound all night.
Instant rock God machine 🤘💀🤘
I’m a sucker for MZ type pedals so Yes I will be getting it 😂
it's not a metal zone though, like at all.
It's more like a Rat and DS-1 + more.
I feel like the Metal Zone almost needs a pre-amp pedal before it to become a full sounding pedal.
That thing sounds scary.
Am I right in saying this is a type of distortion pedal that cuts the lows? Still trying to learn all the terms and lingo. I really like the sound when the bass knob gets cranked up.
I believe the bottom row of knobs are cut and boost, so if you crank up the bass knob it should get you there (sometimes these EQs are very dependent on the other knobs so you may have to adjust the mids and highs as well to dial it in.)
Ryan said it is Baxandall topology. Baxandalls are always cut and boost without affecting other frequencies.
@@Eugensson right, I was thinking of EQD Zoar, the eq knobs are very dependent on each other on that one.
@@joermnyc most traditional tonestacks are (Fendor, Jackson, Vox, Marshall etc). Baxandall is usually used in active basses.
Mud, sludge, swamp, tar, compost, filth, kinda cool, but not for me, not at all, I like tight palm mutes :) The video was very fun though! :)
I find it curious that the musicians who have the most guitars and equipment are the ones who use them the least and those who do not make the slightest effort to make their own music, which should be the main goal of anyone who learns to play a musical instrument.
I have to tell you that I'm only 5 minutes into the video and I want one lmao
Great review. Great sounding pedal. Can I just say that I with JHS had put a bit more though into their design. Not a big fan of the esthetics.
😂 and here I was thinking this is their best graphic design yet. 😂
It sounds like it is based on a Rat. I would use it as a clean boost though.
I took a long, hard drive and thought about my life. In conclusion, I went home and played Sleepwalk with this pedal and all was well.
Damn, I'm out $200 bucks now. (Snaps fingers like I'm mad, but I'm actually ecstatic.) 😆
14:49 "God gave rock 'n' roll to you, gave rock 'n' roll to everyone!"
The doomy stuff at around 20:00 was great too. I'll shut up now. hahah 🤘
I prefer the non-metal channels. Someone told me this is a metal zone.
Come on. Ryan.. this is a Metal Zone!
It’s not though
@@60CycleHumcast A Canadian named Landon says so lol
It just WANTS to sound like a metal zone! That's been the metal zone's problem all his life 😂 great review jhs sounds pretty good and great compared to the boss ❤
Now instead of needing 10 metal pedals in a row, you just need one… or two as this also comes in black.
25 minutes in: po , po , po , get a Bouzouki !
How's it compared to my Empress Heavy Menace,...?
I don't know, I don't have your Empress Heavy Menace.
@@60CycleHumcast
Yup,...
An obvious deliberately avoiding to answer a simple question.
Everyone knows what an Express Heavy sounds like,..then the Heavy Menace.
Those that are familiar with CZcams,.
anyway.
Thanks for answering my question.
It was my assumption,.. anyway.
I've never used an Express Heavy or an Empress Heavy Menace so I guess you are wrong about everyone knowing what they sound like. I have no idea what that pedal sounds like and your comment is the first time I've heard of either. I'm not very familiar with youtube though.
@@Steven-re3txdude.. just… 😂
bad ass
Haha did you play J Park?😂
Mexican Descartes a Kant sports that guitar lately.
Are you on bath salts? What do Descartes and Kant have to do with anything?
Introducing; the RatZone
Hellu frum Urope :) Frum FrUnce:)
That would have to be one of the best sounding distortion pedals I've heard.
