I didn't understand the part in which you said it won't line up... i saw that black tube( what is that for ? ) . I'm servicing my own 100hp outboard engine. I'm an engineer, it doesn't look difficult but I'd be very happy to get some tips from you. I served the american community as a mechanic in california fixing land rover in a shop for 3 years, now I am back in Brazil - rio de janeiro - my home town.. please, would you mind to give some tips of reassembling it. so I don't destroy my gearcase. lol thanks... nice work.

Thanks for the great video. The service manual and most people are saying to leave it in neutral when dropping the unit. Are you having better luck not having any alignment issues when putting it in reverse first and would it be the same for the HD lower unit?

      Hello John,
It's generally recommended to leave the lower unit in neutral when dropping it. However, some users have reported better alignment results by putting it in reverse first. There are mixed responses This practice might vary depending on the specific model and condition of your Mercury lower unit. As for the HD lower unit, the same principle would likely apply, but it's always best to consult the manufacturer's guidelines or a certified technician for the most accurate advice regarding your specific unit. Frank is a certified Mechanic, and putting the engine in reverse is what works best for him!
