  • Mr. Salter Lohn (chiefly title: Lepen Lenger, b. 1957, 65 years old) narrates the legendary tale of Nahnwaiso Lenger, Pohnpei. This narration was documented by NGO Pasifika Renaissance (Executive Director Takuya Nagaoka) on March 18, 2023. The following is a version written by Mr. Lohn for Nagaoka's report on his archaeological survey of Lenger Island in 2007:
Many years ago, there lived a great chief on the island of Lenger. The title of this great chief was Nahnwaiso Lenger. He was the chief of this lovely island. Nahnwaiso was known for his humility, fairness and love of women. It was his love for women that let him go to Areu in Madolenihmw to meet with a secret admirer by the name of Lienkoasoar from the Ledek clan. Lienkoasoar had heard of this young handsome chief of Lenger Island and had arranged to meet with him. The place of the meeting was to be in Areu.
Lienkoasaor had hailed from Katau Peidak bringing with her the three species of land crab (pworu). Three species are called Lipapamoar, Lipapesed and Padartakaileng.
Lienkoasaor had brought with her the three species as gifts for the Lenger chief. Nahnwaiso in exchange had given her a rock that he had chipped off from the mountain on Lenger Island. Having completed their initial meeting and exchanges of gifts in Areu, Nahnwaiso headed back to Lenger but instead of going straight to his place, he stopped at Parem Island. For some reason, he left the crabs in Parem.
Another prominent leader by the title of Soulik en Ahnd made a journey from his island of Ahnd to Parem Island. It was in the voyage or journey that Soulik en Ahnd brought the three species of crab, the Lipapamoar, the Lipapesed and the Padartakaileng to the island of Lenger. To this day, the three species are still plentiful on the island of Lenger.
In tribute to the legendary meeting of Lienkoasoar and Nahnwaiso Lenger in Areu, the people of Areu, particularly the section chiefs, award traditional titles that have Lenger in them. The belief still remains among those who know this story that Lenger at one point became part of Areu. Likewise, the people of Lenger Island still believe that a part of their only mountain is somewhere in Areu. Although anyone can catch the crabs today, it is most proper if these crabs were caught by people belonging to the Ledek clan, the same clan as Lienkoasoar who had given the three species of crab to Nahnwaiso Lenger.
