Very interressing, and yes a video about a custom audio dac headphone amplifier is a good idea. Keep it up !
Sounds a great project and love the modular approach
Yes please! A complete project would be awsome...
Excellent technical review. I would also mention that I do believe that the jumper directly behind the orange relay can be changed to set the headphone output from Low to High gain. Thanks
Yes, the dac/headphone amp design sounds very interesting.
Yes! Revisit that project, I'd love to see more on that. Thanks for the tip on those dacs. Keep up the good work
Very good video. Thank you!
Would like to see you complete your DAC...
Also, an opensource USB+SPDIF modular soundcard (with decent stereo-inputs and outputs) would be a great idea to work on.
Nice review. Interesting your description links now point to the KGUSS DAC-K3, which has exactly the same specs as far as I can tell. User reviews are good. Only youtuber review I could see was a Russian guy who seemed to know his stuff. He seemed to really like it when he switched the two replaceable opamps. Google translate appeared to have him say it was noisy though!
Looking into my first dac/amp from onboard audio. I was thinking of the DAC X6 but feel that there could be a better value one today? Thinking of the BTR3 and using it in usb dac mode for desktop.
"Sounds" good!-pun intended. Thanks Steve.
i would be very interested in following a dac/amp build. Maybe even balanced?
Very good video 👍
Really like the idea of the PreAmp project, I think theres a definite market for such a product at the moment
It will most likely be one of the next projects after the GPSDO. I really want to get it designed as I started it almost 10 years ago now...
This one looked way better on the inside than the other one :)
Yeah, it also cuts out the stuff that's not really needed.
Yes, do it! I'm very interested. Have you looked at Asahi Kasei Microdevices (AKM) devices? Very impressed with some of theirs.
I would be greatly interested in the revival of your headphone/usb/dac design.
I second this
Second this.
do you think the power output is true to the specs on paper? some say it isn't but with the gain jumper, its better. do you think it could push dt990's at 600 ohm? Also does switching the opamp only affect sound through the line out?
Nice video
Question... if I used the USB audio out from the DAC to my iPhone with a USB to lightening adapter would it work? Could I stream music to it?
Thanks
Presumably you can connect this to an existing desktop sound cards S/PDIF connector as a source input?
Would you agree the 24/192 and 32/384 hi res sampling rates they advertise on all these DACs now days is marketing nonsense?. Considering there isn't a DAC in existence today that can actually do 24bit and 144db of dynamic range. Also 99% of people don't have the proper room and gear to fully utilize even the 20bits or 120db of dynamic range that we can get from some DACs. Most people don't realize that we cant hear the full 144db of dynamic range from 24bit, hearing loss starts at 120db. The only part of hi sample rates I believe SOME people may be able to notice is auditory temporal processing. Which is a lenghty subject so look it up on your free time.
Great video.
Fantastic audio project. I`d be very interested in your design. Any thoughts on having PCB`s made ?
Yes, back in 2012 I costed up PCBs and was going to end up spending nearly £1000 in boards 😂 much cheaper now so will approach the design a block at a time with a PCB for each block. Just need to finish the lighting project and pick up tool first
@@sdgelectronics Modular is the way to go methinks. PCB cost is a fraction of what it was. Great job, looking forward to this.
Hi. May i ask you about Alientek d8? Is this any good? I would like to use it for fostex t50rp and some speakers 2.0 and source is pc. I like that this is all in one package, but you may have anoher suggestion? Thanks.
Fosi Q4 vs fiio k3 vs fx audio dac x6 which one is better?
Is it not possible on these to have a manually actuated switch to swap between the back outputs and a headphone so that I don't have to plug and unplug my headphones? Sometimes I want to use speakers, others I want to use my headphones based on whether my wife or the neighbors have gone to bed already. I've never seen anything with an option of speaker or headphone outputs that didn't have anything but automated switching based on which is plugged in.
Would be very interested in your dac project!
Hello sir! thank you for this review, very in depth. I bought the FX audio DAC-X6 as my first DAC+AMP combo for the HD6XX. It sounds quiet good compared to anything onboard I ever heard, but I have gone through this audioscience review which says FX Audio DAC-X6 is trash. My question is how much of it is really effecting the sound we are hearing? is it inaudible?
At the moment I am using its DAC stage only, hooked up to a Little Dot MKII tube amplifier, So does the bad side (Distortion part which explains in the Audiosciencereview) effect the sound if I just use it as a DAC?
Thank you so much! many blessings.
I use mine with the line out connected to external speakers. I've not noticed any issues with the sound quality - it sounds excellent IMO.
The schematic from TX instruments pdf was wrong. +INC and -INC are reversed.
Do i need to download the drivers from the website?
It would be interesting to see the DAC design get going. If you need my assistance for the PCB design do let me know. I do have lot of working experience in Analog PCB designs and can build a layout for you.
Thanks. Just got a few other projects to finish up then I will start on the DAC
Hi
I purchased this DAC last november through Amazon following this review and others that were also praising it. It was hooked to my TV with optical and the amp with good rca cables the bluray player is connected to the tv through hdmi and i was very satisfied until recently when it started to produce a loud unpleasant humming noise that made listening impossible. I tried all different connections possible usb computer bluray coax with and without tv and differents amps and finally came to the conclusion that the rca output of the dac is causing the noise. Did any body experience the same problem? On the other hand the headphone amp section works fine. Thank you
Certain AC-DC power supplies can cause this issue. Can you try another?
I didn't think of that
I will try another one. Thank you
Yes please
Connection cable needed for using with an iphone? Lighning cable to usb B? Would that work?
Yes, seems to work OK
When I plug my headphones into the DAC-X6 I can hear a quiet high-pitched hum. Even when I unplug the USB cable.
Do I have a bad copy of the X6 or is the power adaptor just bad?
Do you have another 12VDC supply you can try? I would initially suspect the power adaptor going into discontinuous conduction mode or even pulse skipping mode. I didn't actually test the power adaptor that came with the DAC.
@@sdgelectronics Thanks for your fast reply. I will buy another adaptor. Hopefully this will fix the hum.
@@sdgelectronics Do I have to look for a specific 12V 1A adaptor? Or will even the cheap ones do the job for me?
@@whosthere9666 You won't even need 1A. 200mA is more than enough. Do you have any you can try before paying out for another power supply?
@@sdgelectronics Just found a 5V 2A one. Can I try it with this one too or will the DAC blow up? :D
X3 or x6?
What's the output impedance?
On the headphone amp?
@@sdgelectronics Yes.
@@Gooberslot I'll check tonight. Thanks

Fx dac sound test
I just go mine in, it's absoluty rubbish.
Bought it in preparation to power my HD 58X's and it's one of the most disappointing purchases of my life. I tested it with my HD570's (58X isn't in yet) and they sound MUCH worse than with my ON-BOARD audio.... It's like my headphones are coated in shellac have no mid-range and an insane amount of reverb when I listen to them via the X6. It's not like my on-board audio is amazing or anything just an ASUS PRO board.. But it's still FAR better than the X6. And I've tried via USB, optical, and coaxial, all sound like crap.
Company refuses to do anything about it unless it's literally not producing sound so I'm just screwed. Seems everyone else got good ones...
Certainly something wrong. Do you get the same sound from the RCA connectors on the back?
your relay is damaged
no shit, genius
I enjoyed your videos but lately it seems like you are just an advertisement channel for Banggood. Are you really doing a "review" or are you just doing a video because you got something for free?
Mailbag videos will always be items I've bought or been sent and are all leading up to wider projects. This one was bought by me, so no incentive. Project and other electronics videos will continue, but video updates are a bit slower as these take time.
