The utterly bonkers Daihatsu Mira TR-XX Avanzato Turbo (with engine swap)

  • Here's a tiny Daihatsu kei-car with an engine upgrade. It has gone from a three-cylinder 659cc turbo producing 63bhp to a four-cylinder 659cc turbo producing just over 70bhp (probably). It revs to an INSANE degree, and I absolutely loved it. Truly, the Mira is Mighty.
    Tested in Tasmania, February 2020 before lockdown requirements became a thing. Life seemed so simple back then...

    Fun fact. In Malaysia, people that uses the Perodua Kancil/Nippa didn't just swap to 660cc turbo 3 or 4 cylinder engines. They also ridiculously fitted a 4 cylinder 1.3 liter K3 engines either NA or Turbo versions. Some also converted to 4WD/AWD system like Marty's little Daihatsu Mira from Mighty Car Mods.

    We had a three-door Mira with no rear seat back in the 90s. Featured an 847cc three-cylinder engine mated to a four-speed gearbox. Before us, it had served as a pizza delivery van and then a florist’s delivery van, Had 65,00km on it when we bought it, and 160,000km when we sold it to an elderly former mechanic who drove it around Australia. Had 390,000km on its original engine the last time I saw it about 10 years ago.

    • @shebbs1
      @shebbs1 Před 4 lety

      Withdrew from Australia too. My mum's last car before she moved back to the UK was a 3-door charade 1.3. Easy to boost the power on, though not as durable in the long term as the 1.0 3-cyl. Got 94kw at the wheels from my mum's, up from the usual 63 at the flywheel. Went like the clappers, though the torque steer was nasty and the standard brakes were drums all around, total rubbish. Daihatsu left Australia around 15 years ago, so very few of their cars are left.

      @@shebbs1 Mate, that sounds like fun. 30 years ago I worked on a farm and we had a Daihatsu 4x4 pick-up that the owner had imported from Africa...no refinement, you had to get out and lock the diffs by a big nut on each hub, once pulled a Massey Ferguson out of mud with one. Happy days !

      Bought my daughter a '99 charade, 5 speed 1600cc 250k on the clock, great fun to drive and has been utterly reliable.
      It's getting tired and needs some dollars spent on it, which probably won't happen, parts are harder to get and there is no market value for the car.

    Yes, small cars are fun, I've had quite a few in my car life. FIAT Panda, Uno, 126, 127, 600 and now a FORD Fiesta MK2. Great the MCM Mira build.

    660cc's is a great size. I had an MZ motorcycle fitted with the Yamaha XTZ 660cc, five valve, twin carb single cylinder engine and that was an absolute hoot as well.

    Very cool. The unmodified versions were sold for a brief time in the UK alongside the 850cc Cuore iirc in the late 1990s.

    Just about any kei car with added turbo is huge fun. More often that not it's nothing, then nothing again, still nothing, then EVRYTHING!!!! Brilliant.

    I always liked these especially when top gear of yesteryear reviewed one..
    It I prefer the 3 pot warble and the monster stereo as original (and awd if I recall)
    Most kei cars were bonkers and all the better for that... We need more!

      Jezza drove one In a supermarket early 90s I remember watching it as a kid and being amazed. It's on CZcams 😊
