- For this year's birthday I made a comic style cake with a thick black outline! I tried this new technique not quite knowing what the end result would be but I absolutely love it!!
From a far it really looks like a 2D drawing!
Here is a real time tutorial of how I made this cake including how I made black buttercream too.

Happy Birthday!!!! What are you, Twenty?! That Cake is just INCREDIBLE!!!! Would NEVER HAVE THOUGHT TO MAKE A "CARTOON BIRTHDAY CAKE"!!!! Don't know if you meant to do this, but the Top Layers are a Bit CROOKED, which makes for an even BETTER CARTOON LOOK!!!!

Melting half a cup of that buttercream develops the colour for black really well

I made something similar today. I used an offset spatule dipped in hot water to smooth out the piped buttercream bits. Alot faster!

I think piping buttercream on parchment paper and placing silicone mat on top. Cooling and just transferring it on cake as buttons
Yes that works well too, just be aware that the curved surface of the cake may affect it :)

How about making the coins on wax paper, outline them and then stick them on the cake?
I know this is from a while ago but I wanted to find out who came up with the cartoon cake because Tigga Mac is in the Ripleys book for these cakes. I love her to d but I could swear she said she got the idea from another bakery

Hi Georgia...I tried this design n it's really beautiful...thank you for sharing..however I have one problem can you help share a solution...the black outline starts to bleed n it doesn't look fresh..I used whipped cream(snow whipped) not butter cream
that’s why! you’re better off with buttercream
Yes buttercream is more firm and works much better than cream
